Had a science teacher with two anatomically correct heart models arranged together to look like a (rough) love heart. Two hearts made one sounds like a sappy depiction of love to me. Plus, crappy artistry and somewhat morbid.
@unksol I’ve also heard several other possibilities from male, female, and shared anatomies, but no actual evidence for any of them. All are likely post hoc, rather than the true origin.

That’s a good point. If you just remove the aorta and vena cava, and leave just the muscly part, then simplify and exaggerate the shape a bit so it doesn’t look like a blob, the classic heart shape is a pretty reasonable conclusion.
I believe it was “I Love Lucy” The creators of that show made the heart shape for the logo at the beginning of the show. Until then, no one had ever seen, or even thought of, such a concept.
I always eat the Turkey’s heart when I prepare the Thanksgiving meal. I believe it gives me the heart of the brave Turkey. It has never looked like the classic heart shape chocolate box; more like an enlarged milk dud.

I think Madison Avenue needed something iconic to sell. They had a meeting and decided that giving someone ‘your heart’ had the best merchandising potential. A team of graphic artists then had to come up with a simple enough shape that it could be mass produced in many mediums. Voilà.
