@ahacksaw@jsh139 Starbucks’ business model was originally to sell shitty coffee masked by milk and sugary syrups. Their coffee was even worse before. It’s better now. Coffe shop owners I know love starbucks because they made paying a ridiculous amount for coffee the norm. Hate them because they sell crap coffee.
@mike808 A coworker used to bring back bags and bags from Kona when he visited the in-laws. It wasn’t peaberry for sure, and the bags had no labels at all. Probably some of the best coffee I’ve ever had.
Peets, French Roast or Major Dickson’s, hand brewed (yes, with the bloom thing) or in a Krups machine, the only (affordable) one that has a wide even spray head, delivers hot enough brew water and doesn’t burn the pot with an overheated pad. I use distilled or zero-water.
I’ve had this one for over 20 years - it has one switch, the only dribble-proof carafe I’ve ever found, and despite the cats’ best efforts to destroy it by knocking it onto the floor multiple times, it always patches back together and keeps on working. It’s been discontinued, but eBay always seem to have extra carafes for sale.
I roast and grind my own beans, then brew them in a temperature-controlled brewer, which I guess puts me relatively high up on the snob scale. On the other hand, I’ve been drinking a lot of cold brew lately, which is apparently a coffee snob no-no. Every summer I look forward to the yearly “cold brew isn’t real coffee and you shouldn’t drink it” article in my Google feed.
The bottom line for me - good coffee is worth the effort, but bad coffee is better than no coffee.
@free Yeah, it’s a completely different flavor profile. I do find that the bean quality matters a little less will cold brew, so I actually haven’t tried it with fresh roasted beans yet. Also, my roaster is too small to handle the amount of coffee I need for a batch of cold brew.
You tell me: I have a cold brewer and a French coffee press. I have whole beans in my cup board and a coffee grinder. But to be honest on any given morning I drink powered instant coffee and think the taste (secretly) is a bit better than from the French press done with ground fresh coffee beans.
I do wonder if the taste would be much better with a very good burr grinder as I only have the cheapest electrical grinder with a fast spinning blade. I look at Sweethome for the best burr grinder and want to buy but I haven’t. I look the same place and and other review sites for the best espresso coffee machines as well, and lust a bit for them, but haven’t bought. Same with an Aero Press. Yes I do like a good shot of espresso. But when I go to coffee bars I no longer get a double espresso (but when I used to get that, I could taste the difference in tannins, richness and minerals from bar to bar), I usually get a large vanilla latte.
So am I a coffee snob that’s just too poor to get the gear? Or maybe I’m just a wannabe coffee snob?
@Undulat Better grinder will not matter that much more. If the coffee is only so so in a regular drip maker it will not be phenominal (sp?) with a better grinder in an aeropress.
Main thing that matters with coffee is freshness, even mediocre coffee fresh roasted is pretty good. If not extracted too much (meaning right amount of beans to water ration and grind is not so fine that water sits in it forever).
I would just experiment. I actually love instant coffee taste. But would take a good cup of coffee any day. Try to add more beans and grind them not as fine, then brew. You will find a sweet spot that makes a good cup of coffee. I always use more beans than most people but grind coarser, so the water does not sit in it as long and gets a better extraction.
Aeropress is a different story. They are a lot more particular with amount of coffee and grind size. as well as extraction time. They make great americanos or just straight espresso. But they will take a while to get what you like down. But price wise you can’t go wrong!
@tinamarie1974 I’ve learned to love coffee and have even become a bit of a snob, but I much prefer good black tea with cream and sugar. I start almost every day with a giant cup of strong Irish Breakfast. Yum.
Hot, black, strong. And no sissy additives or sweet tooth pacifiers either. Espresso would be good if they served it in a man size cup, not that little French thimble! COFFEE! It’s for your protection!
I like good coffee, but if I need a fix I’m not picky. At home I have a plain ol’ Mr. Coffee drip coffeemaker and buy Gevalia or Lavazza, whichever is cheaper. Protip: almost anything that comes in a bag is going to be better than anything that comes in a tin/tub.
I have two and a half espresso makers, a pour-over setup, a cold brew setup, and two grinders, so I guess I’m a bit of a snob. But once I started getting into making espresso and read about other people’s setups, I decided that there was a limit to how much I was willing to invest. I’ve already gone above the limit, but I’m confident that I’ll never spend $4K on a machine.
Besides, I also enjoy coffee from a NYC street cart, which only costs about $1.75.
At home, I only drink one (or sometimes two) cups a day, so I am somewhat picky about it. Fresh beans, hand cranked ceramic burr grinder, precisely heated water and an Aeropress. After much experimentation, I have the routine to make what I like down to rote.
At work, we have a fancy-schmancy Jura automatic espresso/coffee machine (oh-so-trendy Euro-design, which I dislike intensely - one multi-function rotary knob with a single button in the center that is the only control). It makes just OK coffee, but it is quick and (best of all) free, so that’s what I drink.
I voted that I hate coffee, but that’s not exactly true. There are some excellent beers made with coffee. An occasional appearance in especially rich dessert is nice. And I kinda get it when it’s super strong and comes in a rediculously tiny cup.
But I’ll stick to the occasional whole milk white chocolate chai latte if I find myself at a coffee shop.
