I’d decorate sooner, but a lot of my decor is animatronic and not waterproof, so it can’t really get completely set out until we’re reasonably sure it’s not going to rain hard on it. I’ll set some of the bigger stuff out and keep the animatronic parts in the shed and put that out the day of. I had to put a trash bag over the 9’ Roaring Trex head last year.
@Fuzzalini Did you see the Pixar movie about it? Coco.
I found out that my Dad had died as I went in the door to see the movie. There was nothing I could do (he lived a state away), so I watched it with him in mind. Funny and sad; really a perfect embrace of death, loss, music and memory. More sincere and philosophical than the ‘spookiness’ of Halloween, IMO. I’ve been thinking a lot lately how people channel so much energy into slasher movies and trite ghoulishness; it’s one way of dealing with existential fears, but it doesn’t appeal to me. Everyone has their own way, I’m trying to be less judgemental.
I love the evenness between beginning, middle, and late October. So, basically, if you put them up in October, you’re fine. And if you do it earlier . . . well, this isn’t worth fighting about. But, dude.
Fall decorations can start to go out the week of the county fair (started the 14th this year). First of October the Fall stuff can be augmented with Halloween until November when Halloween exits and Thanksgiving takes its place. Memorial Day to Labor Day is for the red white and blue where I live, except I keep my bunting up until the All Horse Parade the week before the county fair.
@allergycheryl@ybmuG I loved carving pumpkins in Alaska and would painstakingly create works of art on them since they’d freeze outside and last forever. Not so much where I live now-it’s like you said, the rot hits fast and hard.
@allergycheryl@ybmuG Good question. Not sure about the pics. It was pre-cellphone days, but I kept a digital camera on me at all times, so I took a ton of pics, I just have no clue where they are. Probably on CDs somewhere.
@Labuda Ok, that’s cool! I never knew that existed. I went on a weekend trip with a pilot friend and we rented a Cessna (through the AFB Flight Club) like the ones in the video and flew north from Eielson AFB to Bettles AK. We flew around the Brooks Range (breathtaking) and visited a lake (forgot the name) that had a small gravel air strip for landing and take off. This place was so remote that there were no roads, no people, just wilderness for hundreds of miles. We stayed at the Bettles Lodge and then flew back the next day-it was the trip of a lifetime! I miss Alaska.
Never - don’t celebrate Halloween.
The bigger question is when to stop wearing my straw hat?
Answer: As the “No White After Labor Day” rules have relaxed considerably, I will wear it whenever it is warm above 60 degrees.
I just said yest that i think its time to start decorating again. I always give out candy!! I live nxt door to a schl so i feel like i SHOULD decorate(small town everyone walks to schl, no buses)!! We experienced a Tragedy(suicide) 4yrs ago and we basically stopped celebrating holidays! He was my daughters BFF and ONLY 16. Its time to move on but so so hard for her. I dont mean to bring anyone down, im sorry if i did. Since i spoke it yest n this poll is up today, i think its a sign to begin again!!!
I don’t usually put any up until it’s at least October but I had a few lying around so I went ahead and put them up instead of just putting them away for a month. I’ll break out the rest of them at midnight on October 1st!
I do not decorate for any holiday. And I don’t get trick or treaters (wish I did tho) as I live on a major road with no sidewalks (too dangerous for sidewalks). If I lived in a neighborhood I’d probably make an effort-maybe.
