Too busy and too unpredictable a schedule these days to even consider another furry friend. It wouldn’t be fair to bring one home, and then leave it behind most of the day and a lot of the weekends…
@shahnm I hear you. Mine was extremely independent and so if we were gone overnight, she was fine. Even two days, she was good because she had an auto-litter box and wouldn’t gobble all her food. But more than 2 to 2 1/2 days, and someone was coming over to feed her or check on her. Now that she’s gone, I’m just not ready to retrain another with our schedules yet.
On Day 1 of my last vacation, I checked my security camera just in time to see one of my cats walk into the living room, barf on the floor, and walk away.
@Moose A couple years back I tried to check in to see how the new dog was getting along while I was at work. I couldn’t see anything on the feed, so I started panning it around and this is what I saw.
Thank you everyone. I really appreciate it. She’s the only pet I’ve had as an adult (ex hated animals so I got her right after the divorce in 2003) so I’m kind of bereft. I find myself nearly calling to her to tell her it’s time for bed. It’s going to take a while.
Over the years had people come to my house, taken to a friend’s house, taken with me, had a friend who ran a no kill shelter keep them up front in a room there…
If you’re going on vacation, you should probably make arrangements to take care of your pets before you leave, rather than trying to do stuff remotely while you’re away.

I have pet care plans for emergencies like going to the hospital. My adult children like my cat too much to punish her for my poor vacation planning, so she would be okay if I didn’t arrange for care until after I left. My relationship with my children might suffer if I did that, so I won’t.
All of the above (the poll, not the comments.) It can be fun to bring them with but there are a lot of vacation spots where a person with a pet is a third-class citizen.
I just spent four hours burying the cat. It wouldn’t keep still, wriggling about and howling its head off. We were going away for a fortnight’s holiday and it wasn’t at all a well cat, so I thought I’d better bury it just to be on the safe side.
No pets. My schedule is too filled and inconsistent to be fair to a dog (the only kind of pet I’d get). Plus, I have friends who do have them, and it’s always a hassle for them when we’re out late/on a weekend trip.
But I sure love petting and playing with any dogs I encounter.
@curtw4 my husband gave me an auto-litter box (litter bot/litter robot? can’t remember the name but it’s huge) for my birthday several years ago, best danged thing ever. i still had to dump it (obviously) about once a week but it went straight into the trash bag and the cat didn’t get exposed to the fumes from her urine (which for her was enough to knock you over - she drank a LOT of water and used the bathroom several times a day)
This is a dog poll. Cats take care of themselves. Leave them extra food, water, litter box. Done. That’s why I have cats. My husband’s dog has to have someone to care for it, so it goes to grandpa’s house.
@katbyter Actually, out in the country, dogs are also OK if you leave them extra food and water and they are “outdoor” animals… We used to leave ours for up to a week to 10 days on occasion.
No pets currently. Have had a series of dogs, cats, fish, a white rat, a horse and a possum over the years. Finally told the kids I wasn’t gonna let them have any pets bigger than I could bury with a post hole digger.

I’ve boarded her and had people come take care of both over the last16 years. But she passed away Sunday

Dump extra food in the bowl because they will be totally fine with out me and come to the security cameras when called.

@llangley Nah. I love critters and am rescuer. I love my kids too but admittedly, they’re all pests at particular points in time.

I chose “board them”, but it if its only a weekend getaway, I might have a friend or family member check on them a couple of times a day.
When the kids moved out, they took the pets. Leaving us free to travel whenever we want.
Board the dog and have a friend pop in to check on the cats.
Board the dog. Sitter for the cat when it’s more than two nights. One or two nights, he can survive with extra food and second litter box.

@ivannabc I wish I could get one. I have 17” of space between my laundry dryer and the wall, and the smallest ‘bot I’ve seen is 19” wide.

I have a pet sitter lady I’ve used for decades if we are gonna be gone for more than a few days.
We have an Autopetfeeder that is great, love it.
They’re fish, so it’s kind of hard to take them or board them.
