@bleedmichigan I’m so jelly. One day I want a small Class B for me and two tiny dogs to take around the country. I tried pulling a trailer once, but had an accident and will never pull anything ever again. Backing up is hard because of the directional challenge IMO.
@ruouttaurmind I actually have a Sheriff friend who has a dog training business. But his most lucrative business is that he is a certified trainer of bedbug sniffing dogs. He has contracts with many hotels in Ocean City, MD.

@ruouttaurmind I always, always, always start with checking bedbugregistry.com, read the review sites, and then very carefully check for all the usual signs upon arrival. I have the same (not so) irrational fear.
@mfladd@sammydog01 Now, when I stay in hotels/motels I pack plastic storage bags large enough for my luggage and personal items. Everything stays within storage bags when I’m not being actively used. Then, as @sammydog01 suggests, the moment I get home everything goes into the wash, whether or not it was worn. Luggage is stored in the same plastic bags at home as well.

@PocketBrain Continental breakfast is OK by me. The last place I stayed my one regret is that they didn’t have half and half for the coffee- only the sweetened stuff. Next time I’m taking a few of those little creamer tubs.
@jmoor783 They usually have bagels or danish and often instant oatmeal. I love instant oatmeal. And one place I frequent has bacon day twice a week. I live for bacon day.
Any place with a hot and a cot is OK with me, after all, I’m not traveling to see a hotel. But it has come to pass that I am expected to find better accommodations that at least don’t have obvious bugs or smell of cigarette smoke.
@bleedmichigan@JoetatoChip@compunaut I’ve done it in my minivan, in fact I still do that when I am on my way somewhere…or a rest area if it has a guard, or Pilot, Loves, etc. I generally do that when I am in Houston too (at MDA) since everything is too expensive there. The problem there is the heat for summer apts as I am reluctant to do more than crack the window for safety reasons. I also chose to park right by the light pole figuring if people will mess with someone it will be with someone in not so noticeable a spot.
If Imma hike or canoe in, need a tent (tho I’d like to try one a those fancy hammock set-ups). Otherwise AirBnB or vintage hotel. If you’re not fussy, those have the most character and are the most fun.
For those who have a morbid curiosity about the grossest hellholes America has to offer, you should watch the youtube series “Another Dirty Room” by Dan Bell. They go around looking for mold, bedbugs, and bodily fluids in the worst dives. They also find a LOT of drugs.
When we’re not staying with friends or family, I defer to my wife, who has an amazing talent for finding interesting and affordable lodgings. We’ve stayed in everything from tiny little B&Bs to hundred-year-old brothels-turned-hotels to ultramodern hipstery urban camping, and it’s all been awesome. I don’t think we’ve stayed in a single motel in the time we’ve been traveling together.
Long term, I’d like to get an old school bus and turn it into a camper (as much for the experience as for the result), but that’s a few years and a dozen projects down the road.
Well, i prefer to stay at a condo - my mum died and left me her Worldmark ownership… the maintenance fees are enough to encourage me to actually take trips on the regular. Right now i am spending a week on the beach in a 1 bedroom condo w/ my beloved (our 22nd anniversary is today) … it cost me $0.00 out of pocket directly for this… lots of space and a kitchen… but i don’t have to clean up when we go!
I picked “an old vintage hotel”. That’s where I stayed for a wedding last year in upstate New York. Had the room so cold from the wall A/C that I woke up without any alarms and no reminder that I had to rush to work or get woken up by “Florida noise”. Best sleep I’ve had in years. And the free Breakfast was a nice bonus.
I also stayed at a Marriott in San Diego that use to be a bank. They even kept the giant safe and transformed the room into a gym.

I used to stay at inexpensive national motel chains. Always clean, usually dirt cheap. I mean it’s just a place to sleep and shower after all.
But now I have a (possibly irrational?) fear of bringing home bedbugs. I read an article somewhere which suggests about 20% of motels have bedbugs.

I prefer a modern hotel at present. I’ve done all the accommodations spoken of…but at my age and disabilities…I prefer something newer
