We’re in the foothills of the Rockies. It snows for a day or two, sunny for a week, snows for a day, sunny again… there are always little bits of snow hanging around. It was snowing like crazy last time I looked out the window.
Here winter is 5 months long—November through March. Our first snow was about 6 inches, and arrived even before Halloween. But when a season lasts almost half the year, it means that the weather is anything but uniform. So we get frigid temperatures, snow, a thaw (often with rain), repeat.
At the moment, we have about an 80% snow cover, some converted to ice. But it’s at most only 2 inches thick…this after a December storm that left the land covered with 2-4 feet of snow.
It has snowed the normal amount for us (a lot) but it’s the snowless days that have been weird, as they keep getting so warm, the snow all melts. We normally stop seeing any melt from mid November at the latest, so we’d have a foot or two by now. It’s weird and actually kinda nice. Went sledding one day and grilled the next.
Armageddon is predicted for tonight through Monday 10am. Considering that the pavement and ground are above freezing, that the highs each day will be in the 40’s, I am sitting here laughing (of course I grew up in the snow belt) as I hear the forecast on TV. It will rain starting at 9pm today and then by 3am turn to snow. Projected snow is 0.1 of an inch locally and up to 1-2 inches starting 50 or so miles north. Then weather will clear up by 10am and temps will rise into the 40’s. Then it will freeze that night so maybe some black ice Tuesday morning. Clearly the world will end here shortly. Schools are already closed for Monday with mention of Tuesday. Yup. We are all going to die.
What is worse is the boil water alert we currently have. Sigh.
I was in Charlotte NC visiting daughter unit 1 at the time, but here in NYC this Winter has had a single storm with ~12" of snow about three weeks ago. Not at all an issue for me since I was away, though with me working from home 98% of the time with the pandemic and thus not needing to park my car after work or even move it, that snow would not have been a problem for me at all.
It just started to snow. Big wet flakes. Right now we have enough to just barely cover the grass. Supposed to stop in 5 hours at 3am so maybe we will actually get closer to an inch or maybe even two. Hopefully it won’t be just slush.
If any actually stays on the ground come morning (eg hasn’t melted) I think I’ll build a snowman and put it by the front door of this apartment building. I’ll have to transport a bunch of snow in a garbage bag though to have enough. Hmm or I could create an army of them out of snowballs and line them along the brick top of the dirt retaining wall everyone sits on. Be entertaining to sneak out and do it while everyone is still asleep so they wake up to it.
Hahaha on TV I am watching city people manually, as in by hand!!!, throw sand on roads while in the back of a city pick up truck. Another non-city pick up truck had some devise attached to the trailer hitch and tailgate that is spinning something out the bottom of it. I think the city does own a couple of salt trucks and plows. No way I want to be on the roads in the morning though as idiots, who have no idea how to deal with a skid, will go flying down the roads/highways and tailgate.
At the base of the Rockies, just north of Salt Lake. Drought is probably the best word for it. We’ve had a few storms, but much lighter than usual, and they’ve melted off fairly quickly. It was a brown Christmas, and most of the winter it’s been brown.
There is snow in the 10,000+ foot peaks just east of us, but a lot less than normal. At 4,500’ where we’re at we would normally have a foot or two on the ground, with an occasional melt off during the winter.
I’ve yet to use the monster snowblower I bought last year.
Last week we did get a dusting of snow overnight, which immediately melted and refroze into black ice. The commute brought over a hundred accidents because everyone forgot how to drive in winter.
we got snow on halloween, and then a foot + before xmas, but then after a few miserable days trying to get around, on xmas it was 65F and it all disappeared. last week it snowed twice - very beautiful and none of it stuck it’s boston though, so anything could happen between now and april.
NW Oregon. Saturday afternoon was sunny and 52F. I was at a gas station and saw riders of a motorcycle club come in. In a normal winter there would have been some snow by now, but none so far. However, I’ve seen forecasts that this could be a la Nina year, which means greater than normal rain/snow chance. So I put snow tires on the cars over Christmas break just in case since we live up in the foothills.
I don’t know, but this was taken from my front yard.

@Pony Same here.
I think it is more dandruff than snow…

Same as most years here in West Central Florida.
Our yearly storm is today. It will be gone before work on Monday.

Here in Ohio, we got a couple snow storms, then it melted. So nothing really stays.

Snow? I was picking tomatoes in my garden yesterday!

What is this snow for which you speak?
Upstate NY, an inch or 2, melt, rain, another inch… repeat. No-one is happy.
@culmac bring out the ice skates?
