Retired now, but it used to be solitude. My work method is immersive and single minded. I will spend a day thinking about the best approach to tackling a tough task, an hour getting my assets in order to work, and then focus intently on it till it’s done. Took my bosses a bit to understand my method but it was highly effective, I never missed a deadline and my work was top quality. But I need private, quiet space. This includes no music, no people talking around me, no phones. I had a private office with a door I kept mostly closed, cracked open just enough that people felt comfortable opening it if they needed something important. At my contractor training I used to semi-joke that if they wanted an answer, they could call me. If they wanted the right answer, they could email me. They quickly learned that an email would always get a same-day, thoughtful, thorough answer with relevant attachments and links, and none of them ever called me except in an emergency. My coworkers were so jealous that I never got interrupted by the phone or the boss.
I could honestly answer each of the listed options, depending on the productivity I was attempting. I usually write listening to music - but sometimes need complete silence - and draw listening to audiobooks. I use AC in the summer and heat in the winter, and sometimes sit in my comfortable chair when I need a break from standing at my standing desk which I’ve used and loved for years.
However, at my actual workplace, I have exactly zero of the above, and I still manage to be ‘productive’ now and then.
An ergonomic workstation so my body doesn’t get broken. Comfortable headphones and music is a close second. I need to block out conversations in order to focus on programming. I also have a company-sponsored FitBit that reminds me to get up and walk every hour. It’s anti-productive in the short term but is good for long-term productivity.
If i had a job in an office, if buy one of these desks. I’ve actually been looking at the kind that just raise your computer for that possibility. But i work at home and go out to clients in the afternoon. What i need is space to pace while taking on the phone. I stand up at work a lot already.
My husband was an air traffic controller… the old hat type… they were all former military. Mandatory… smokes, coffee and cussing otherwise all air traffic stops.
@f00l I’ve heard orcas on there a few times and it was super exciting. Once it went on and on for about a half hour. But I’d say 95 percent of the time I listen and don’t hear any animals, just water moving around and vessel traffic, sadly. And the Lime Kiln one is the best one to listen to- not sure the others are still operating
Having a job is an absolute requirement for being productive, at work.

*My Lazy Boy Recliner with active lumbar support is comfortable- too comfortable- it turns me in a really Lazy Boy.

I am most productive at work when the email service is down. Not having meetings to attend helps too.
