We said goodbye to another kitty this morning

Rachel, a sixteen year old tortoiseshell. She was born on 4-4-04.

Her kidneys were shot. We knew it was coming, she was diagnosed last September. The disease snowballed the past few weeks and after a full blood panel and the horrible results, we knew it was time, there was no coming back from it.

At least we were both able to be with her when she passed.

Poor kitty. We went through a couple years recently where 4 of our 5 cats died (aged 18 - 21, we got good years out of all of them).

It’s sad when each one goes and doesn’t get easier with each one.

- @OnionSoup It is horrible to lose our furr babies, we lost 3 old sweet girls, within a month. Was awful. And as lifes little jokes happen, several other bad things were going on. So sorry for your loss.Agreed it never gets easier. Little chihuahuas, and 2 had medical issues, and Sissy decided even though mostly blind she would dart out the door when it opened. I chased her for weeks, terrified she would get hit. They all crossed the rainbow bridge close together. A heart can break for sure.

- @OnionSoup I answered this before, but it didn’t take because of the VMP Irk bag, that I missed because I was answering this.
  
  We’ve had over sixty cats in the 35 years we’ve been together. The worst loss was eight in one year. That was the same year we lost two elderly (18) siblings to kidney disease and a third (middle aged) because of chylothorax (heart disease) over a 4th of July weekend.
  
  And, no, it hasn’t gotten any easier. We know it’s going to be happening quicker now since the cats are aging out. We’re not looking forward to it.

- @Sugaree1956 yeah ours had all been with us through many phases in life too. They had been with us through thick and thin through hard times and good. It’s always sad to say goodbye to them.

I’m so sorry. Losing a pet is a hard thing to go through. It seems you gave her lots of love and joy during her time with you, and she did the same for you.

It is so hard but they are totally worth every tear. We lost our oldest recently. She was a rescue that we had for nearly 13 years.

We have the reverse situation. Bought a parrot (African Grey) when we were 50 ish. 24 years later he is a young adult according the vet and we are old farts. Instead of dying like any normal pet, he might live another 30 to 40 years. He has a pretty good life-eats what we eat although basically has an fried egg for breakfast and a chicken leg for dinner (please no cannibal jokes-have heard them all). plus bird seeds to snack on during the day as well as cantalope, bananas, and string beans on a daily basis. We don’t keep him in the cage-he is either on top of the cage, on other perches around the house or walking around my office. He goes in the cage to eat or just to chill out. Why would he want to die-he has a pretty good life.

If you are interested, some local animal shelters may be looking for foster parents to watch kittens until they are old enough to be adopted. We have a momma with 5 kittens about to be old enough to be adopted.

- @wronkerville We failed at foster 101. We’ve had over sixty cats in 35 years.
  
  We made up our minds to not take anymore in at this point (today, we have 12 - one is twenty years old, deaf and blind with high blood pressure; one is on thyroid meds and we’re keeping a close eye on her kidneys and another one is close to twenty).
  
  We’re nearing (if we’re not there yet) our dotage and have no one to take our cats if something happens to us. So, we’re keeping that in mind when we think of adopting.
  
  Except we did get that one that’s around a year old a couple of weeks ago…

- @lisaviolet @wronkerville Yes it is so hard to rehome fosters. I have done that with 5 so far and with two of them I really, really wish I hadn’t as they were so incredibly loving. It’s been 4 or 5 years and I still miss them. It’s hard not to get so very attached to the sweeties. I have 2 right now that need homes (and a shelter is looking for me - as they are both special needs it is harder to find a good home).

- @Kidsandliz @wronkerville The only kittens we ever gave up were Rachel and Ross (siblings) three littermates.
  
  They were born under our bedroom window and they lived under/in the bumper of our Mustang that we never drove (it had a cover on it). I would take food out and feed the group under the car, hoping they’d get used to me and I could grab them. This picture has mom and all five kids. We kept the tortie (Rachel) and the black kitty (Ross). And eventually caught mama (Lil Bit). We lost her to kidney disease years ago, Ross to cancer last year. The little calicos were given to a rescue to be adopted out.
  
  That’s our only regret. We wish we would have kept them.
