Say what you will. My wife and I chose to marry on Valentines Day. She thinks it’s romantic and I get anniversary reminders weeks in advance. Win-win!!
@kittykat9180 yes discounted chocolate is a great bonus!! Gotta make the store rounds to see if there is any I like that is left so I know if it is worth the effort to come back at midnight for 70% off chocolate.
@edwardsm6 Yes. Same with my wife and I couldn’t be happier about it. I’d rather work at our relationship all year long and avoid an over-crowded hail mary. Makes for a much more satisfying marriage.

I like hearts and cake and chocolate and this day should be wrenched from the evil corporate interests that are trying to monetize it and be a day to have sweets and be sweet to those in your life.

If your dating or married, it’s not really romantic, it’s expected and you can only get in trouble if you mess something up. Why do we celebrate this stupid holiday?
@arielleslie congrats! If all goes well I should hit 15 later this year… but to my point, does it not feel expected and not romantic? If you were to get an unexpected gift on a random other day, doesn’t that feel more sappy/romantic?
@Tystix A random “I thought this would make you smile” is always better than a holiday. But it’s still nice to have a day dedicated to it. And it can be fun to get a bit silly with it. There isn’t an obligation or expectation to be a certain type of degree of “romantic”. I think last year I drew him hearts in candy before he got up in the morning. We use it as an excuse to do something like drink some fancy wine or go for a long ride in the mountains.

@mike808 Heh. Hadn’t even thought of that angle. She was definitely the easiest of my three to parent. Straight A student, state-qualifying athlete, and still wanted me to tuck her in before bed each night until she left for college (read: come talk to me so i can put off going to bed for another half-hour).
I feel like the week after Valentine’s Day is the week in which everyone that had an “eating better” resolution and was holding on to it for dear life finally gives up in light of all the candies floating around…
I normally don’t celebrate it, but if my husband wants to do something special, I’m not going to break his heart and become cynical. We did celebrate, but nothing too special, just a romantic dinner at home, watched a TV show and cuddled. A bit of romance once in a while doesn’t hurt, it’s not that big of a deal if you celebrate this day or not.
Being single for large swatches of time, Valentines Day is a ‘happy’ reminder. When in a relationship, the day puts pressure and expectation on an otherwise lovely winter’s day…course I say that and it’s-11 outside without the windchill.
i don’t hate it, but i’m not obsessed over it. looking forward to my yearly valentine from my mom also getting a haircut today, very excited about that.
My wife’s birthday is 2 days before Valentine’s day, so I always have to “hold back something” for Valentines day. I don’t mean I short-change her, but if I have multiple gift ideas, I have to save the most romantic (ish) one for the 14th.
@DrWorm my partner’s birthday is also the 12th! i just give him all his presents then though, and bake a cake. today i’ll just make a nice dinner. (and we’ll have leftover cake )
