Now that the note 7 series has decided to become a military usage phone only, a major gap has been opened for the top smartphone. Anyone care to comment on which they think has the reigning spot right now?
@Barney Net 10 sent me one of those (well similar anyway) earlier this year when they got rid of G2 and my 2010 phone was ready to bite the dust. Of course then someone else gave me their old 5S which is cooler than I thought. Except I don’t want to become dependent on those cool features as I won’t be able to afford to replace it once it is no longer supported and dies…
You need a handset. The phone needs to be Sprint-compatible. There are lots of good used and refurb ones on Swappa/EBay/Amz. Then you wait for a good deal by watching Slickdeals daily looking for ringplus. I think you have to have a handset ready to go.
When one of the good offers appears on slickdeals, you pounce and signup. It costs you something well under $100 to sign up. I tink well under $50 but can’t remember. That’s to open the account and to cover overages. Then you get some great deal (it varies by week, but, for instance, 5gb lte data, 5000 talk minutes, 5000 texts free for life, as in no monthly charge at all.)
And it works fine wherever sprint works fine.
It you are interested, then before you signup and before you purchase a handset, read a 5-10 of the various slickdeals threads on the ringplus weekend offers to see how it works and how to signup.
It is for real. Ringplus does not do these offers every single week. You want to grab one that has at least 4gb/4000min/4000texts monthly for free. Those offers will come up at least once every month or two.
As long as you don’t go over your limits, you don’t owe them any more $.
These data limits won’t cover video or YouTube, but they will handle google maps and casual surfing and email and things like banking apps.

project fi actually looks like a good deal and covers my area now… My wife and I both have galaxy s3’s, so we’d have to get new phones- anyone know the cheapest way to get phones that would work?
I’d recommend the 32gb so you have room to store media on the phone so you can get the most bang for your buck with the project fi service. I am on wifi at both work and home and pre-download my streaming media to my phone and my fi bill is typically $25/mo or less. If I were streaming everything during my commute, I bet I’d be paying $10-15 more a month.
@Pantheist I am looking at switching from Republic Wireless to Google Fi myself. I’m still using my first smartphone, a first gen Moto X. I’m trying to figure out which of their smaller phones best suits me, and which home improvement project I should back burner to pay for it, or if my Moto, Republic and I should just soldier on into 2017 together. I won’t save any money on Google Fi, but I’ll get 4g for the price I’m paying for 3g now, and some useful extra features and a better coverage map. But is that worth a pricey new phone? Still trying to decide.
@liz Thanks for the info. I use ting right now with no data and I pay about 50 bucks a month for the two of us- looks like I’d pay 35 for fi. I see for that deal it says one per customer- if I have two lines does that mean I can get two or do I have to sign us up separately then cancel one and bring the phone over?
@Pantheist I’m not sure, but you might want to reach out to project fi customer service and ask whether or not you would lose either $150 discount if you combine accounts before the 6 month limit for remaining active. My guess is they probably don’t care as long as the phone remains active on their service.
It seems like you could buy each phone separately on the respective google account, and then combine them into a group plan right away – or keep separate accounts for six months if project fi customer service says you need to. Even if you had separate accounts for 6 months, you would still be saving money.
But, again, just reach out to customer service directly. They are shockingly helpful. About three weeks after I bought my 6p, the web store marked the phone down $100. After a 30-second web chat where I asked about a potential credit, the CS agent apologized, cheerfully refunded me the full $100 and thanked me for being a customer.
