He has a full set of hubcaps for a 1959 Cadillac de Ville hanging in my… his garage but doesn’t own a Cadillac.
@ruouttaurmind But perhaps some day in the future when 1959 hub caps are even rarer you can sell them and then have a ton of money to continue to be able to support your lego addiction habit.
I bought a rug. It was $10., it’s hand-knotted, 9x12, only surface dirt, does not smell of pee, and it weighs about 60 lbs. If anyone can suggest where it may have come from (other than an estate sale, which I know), please tell me.
@sammydog01 This particular charity shop has a ‘connection’ with some local estate sale business owners. After the sales are over, she gets the remnants, and whatever the shop doesn’t want goes to the local Teen Challenge shop. The TC is next door to an Ollie’s. The estate sales are in very prosperous older neighborhoods, the donors get valid tax donations, and everyone is happy. That’s why I’m eating leftover pizza off Royal Doulton (Cranbourne) and Rosenthal (Chrysopras), because they were $.25 a plate/soup bowl.
@rockblossom Thanks, I had no idea, except that there are no actual flowers or animals represented. After shampooing, the colors are not quite what I thought. After shampooing the same area twice, the water is still coming out filthy. May have to do it again.
@OldCatLady@RiotDemon No clue as to the origin or type, but if you want to clean it right the first time, buy a can of Tuff Stuff upholstery and carpet cleaner in the auto section. Add directly to your shampooer and watch the true colors be revealed as the dirt disappears.
Not sure where you live , but I would try to find an appraiser or a specialy rug dealer that sells these type of rugs. Most are massed produce, but if it is over 30 years old it probably is worth a few bucks
@OldCatLady If the fringe is actually part of the rug and not sewn on it is worth a lot more than if the fringe is sewn on.
If it really is old be careful about what you use as soap so you don’t accidentally damage it.
These rugs can hold a LOT of dirt. You might find it useful to lay it over something off the ground (like a couple of drying lines close together and then drape it so it can drain the water off) and run a hose to get out a bunch of dirt that way. Then do the soap (of course you have already started with the soap but hosing where it won’t be sitting in the dirty water may help). I have a couple of old family ones and did that. Once it was finally clean (cleaned it after doing the hose it down step, also hosed it after the soap too) and dry it weighed way less than it did with all the dirt in it. I was really surprised.
@OldCatLady I think there’s a chance I bought a lamp from that shop!
Our local Teen Challenge shop my youngest daughter’s favorite haunts to buy prints. Just for the frame, mat, & glass, they’re great deals. I try to stay away from the books since our shelves are overflowing.
Last time I shopped there, I found a squat “bean pot” lamp for our family room at a ridiculously low price, and I especially like the way they arrange the clothing by color. It looks like a rainbow (and my own closet).
The carpet is lovely! If you’re tired of trying to clean it, but you think it’s really worth dropping some money to get it properly cleaned, I can recommend a local company that will pick it up and practically blow/vacuum/shampoo the heck out of it. Just whisper in my direction.

Passed up on this gem of a leather jacket that was fully embroidered with currencies from around the world, this weekend. Unfortunately, Goodwill and I didn’t see eye-to-eye that this was worth $30.00. Time will tell if i regret my decision.
@TrevorAM if you ever do obtain this jacket, the Freudian pressure to answer requests to pay for things with “What do you think I am, made of money?” will likely be overwhelming.

A couple of years ago I found a La Pavoni espresso maker for $40. They retail for about $1,000. Then I found a mint Canon F1 SLR with 58mms f1.4 lens for $2.00.
I went to Goodwill this morning.
Found a nice old German beer stein ($5) and some records ($1 ea) in excellent condition. Also a very nice pair of tin snips I already tossed into the barn. There seems to be more nice things right after the holidays.
The major thrift store out here in my area is so crooked, next to them, the Leaning Tower of piza is positively straight. They make out like they are a Christian, non-profit, charity driven organization but they are anything but. I worked for them years ago as a technician and that was the most unethical companies I’ve ever worked for. Plus, most of the time, you can go next door to WallyWorld and get the exact same item for the same price, if not less.
I’m glad I saw this topic, though. I forgot I left a rotisserie out in my truck that I found at a (truly Christian) local shop today.

@OldCatLady It looks like a Karastan rug. A lot of those are now made from New Zealand wool but use the patterns from old Persian rugs. Like this one, which is similar but not the same pattern. :

I got a two dollar clock. It’s about four inches square, and it works. I almost bought a magic 8 ball, but that was $5.
