This or That, Day 5
8Well yesterday was an interesting conglomeration of mostly thumbs-up, a couple opines on the unsatisfactory nature of the implied equation of thumbs-up and the OK sign and even a reference to the fact that some people have hijacked the OK sign for nefarious purposes. Well, that was fun, I must say!
So today we consider that which (I hope) will engender the wholesome and spirited debate that can only be inspired by those of unqualified and unadulterated virtue – superheroes!
Now I recognize that there are far more candidates, good and not so, than we could ever list here. But I remind you of the parameters we laid down at the beginning. I give you two choices and you pick between them. Other selections, no matter how objectively superior, are superfluous. Then again, if you can’t help but deviate from the established protocols (a propensity you have already well demonstrated) then that’s an issue for you and your therapist to deal with. No judgment here…well, not overt, anyway.

@tinamarie1974 @ybmuG They’re the fairer sex is what I’m saying! I think men would die if they had to go through child birth. Ask any tattoo artist, women have much higher thresholds for pain.
@Gypsigirl213 @ybmuG I think the label of fairer sex has less to do with pain tolerance and more to do with our delicate features, beauty and smaller/frailer frame vs our male counterparts.

@daveinwarsh @PhysAssist I can accept that Superman somehow gets powers from our yellow sun. It’s a few assumptions, but it fits into our universe. But to completely defy the laws of physics with those powers, (the earth would be ripped apart, everyone would have flown into space, etc) is utterly ridiculous. My least favorite SM movie. I’d rather have the B/W ones with Reeve.
@daveinwarsh @ybmuG Hence my caveat- and while I grew with George Reeves, and respected his portrayal, I thought Christopher Reeve was the quintessential Superman, despite the above.

I met him (CR) during the early 80’s at a few fundraisers. He knew a friend of mine reasonably well, so he was willing to talk to me a bit.
I no longer remember about what … prob about nothing much.
But he was exquisitely considerate and acted quite personally interested in everyone. Zero “attitude”.
@CaptAmehrican @daveinwarsh @f00l @PhysAssist seems to be consistent with his public reputation. Always cool when you hear someone with personal experience that confirms it. He’s one of the few celebrities I would care to meet…and sadly cannot.

The Superman movies have been underwhelming to me.

The Superman films have been underwhelming.
The first half of Man Of Steel (I think that’s the one) was promising. Actually had some good scripting and acting and dramatic value.
The second half was a special effects wasteland. That portion of the script/film was pretty much worthless, except for the moments of virtual dad Russell Crow.
If I were going by film quality, Spider-Man wins.
I usually avoid superhero films, along with avoiding theatrical releases of just about everything. Have only seen a few.
Perhaps I’m not a holder of a qualified (quality) opinion.

Overall I prefer DC to Marvel, but Marvel has better movies. I have to go with 80 years of Superman being greater than 50 plus years of Spider-man.

@macromeh @ybmuG Have to be kidding me. It won rave reviews from critics and fans, not to mention the Oscar and Golden Globe for best animated film. It’s ‘filmed’ in a very unique way giving it a sense of comic books. I’ve learned enough about your wit and wisdom these last few months. I pretty much guarantee you’ll like it.

@cinoclav @ybmuG Yeah, my 20-something son (a Manga and Anime fan) thought it was great; me, not so much.
When I was quite young, my friends and I used to hide behind the shelves at the local 7-11 to sneak reads of the comics.
That 7-11 carried the DC Universe, but did not carry Marvel.
These tastes are formed when young.

@f00l - comic books were $0.12 when I was a kid, which was a big chunk of my allowance, which was a quarter a week for a long time, so we always tried to sneak reads at the news stand whenever possible. I wasn’t that crazy about superheroes but for some reason a spottily-distributed series called THUNDER Agents really caught my attention, and of all the agents, the anti-hero was the one I particularly liked:
