Studies have shown that the over-apologizer is not at all that interested in what others around them say. More critically, they are obsessed with making sure any issue at hand remains “all about them” and that the topic remains focused on the apologizer, not the apologizee*.
I’ve only bought a couple of things from Anker but, in my experience, they’re one of the only brands of anything that sell their products for what they’re actually worth.
The bluetooth speaker I bought sounds exactly as good as they claimed it would (which is surprisingly good for such a small package), and the battery lasts at least as long, if not longer than what they claim.
As opposed to other brands who make audacious claims and charge outrageous prices for cheap and shoddily made products (cough Monster cough), Anker products actually seem to be the opposite - high quality at low prices.

I saw this and thought someone might be interested in a pair of headphones that actually cost what they are worth.
Now, I know absolutely nothing about these headphones but, knowing what I know about Anker, I’d bet they sound, at the very least, fine. And I’d bet few, if any, come out of the box already broken or break soon after.
My experience w Anker products has been similar to yours. I don’t hesitate to purchase something with this brand label if I need or want the item. I think their stuff is also v popular on slickdeals, and frequently shows up on one or another of Amazon’s various daily deals.

@ruouttaurmind no idea what a Lion is, but Walmart has closed its Neighborhood Markets here, so it’s a suburban thing now, and Aldi and other discount stores don’t offer the same array of products.
So I said just above that I bought some earbuds from Morningsave. My wife kind of wanted some airpods, but only kind of, and I saw these. They had good reviews from what I found through Google, which is why I picked them from among the half dozen or so knockoffs that were on the site at the time even though they were on the high end of price. I used my 20% off code at $29 and was pleased enough with them that I ordered myself another set without the code.
They sound decent and the range is way better than my little rowkin or whatever little button ones I got here before. I guess that’s because the leg piece gives more room for an antenna. I left her phone in the kitchen and walked to the master bathroom before they broke up, which is three rooms away. The case also charges with a lightning cable, so if you’re an iPerson that’s a plus. The specs don’t mention that. The “wall charger” mentioned really meant “short USB cable”, which was totally ok.
Now they’re only $17, which is even better. Use that TREATME code today and they’re less than half the price I was cool with.

You can buy them all day long for $2.50 on aliexpress with 37 cents shipping. It might take a month to reach you but these are good quality braided cables and worth the wait.

@therealjrn I want to try one of the magnetic kinds too. The one where you can leave the lightning connector in the device and magnetically connect it when you need to.
The only problem is that I cannot find any cheap ones that are less than 1 meter long. The charging stand I have and the USB port is within inches of each other and it’s on a small table so I don’t have much room to coil up that much excess cordage.

Finished size is 34" x 23.5", this is a fairly large puzzle with larger piece sizes suitable for kids, older adults, or those like me blessed with hamfists and poor close-up vision.
@willdavi My problem would be finding a flat spot in the house big enough to work on the puzzle. It would need to be there for a couple days and I don’t have any space in my hoarder house.

The larger pieces puzzles are much easier to put together. It usually takes me three or four hours to do a standard size 300 piece puzzle, and about half that to do the larger pieces puzzles. As little as an hour to do the jumbo piece size puzzles (Ravensburger XXL pieces for example).
Ok, jigsaw-puzzlers, I have a question (or three):
What do you do with a puzzle once you complete it?
Frame it?
Take it apart, put it back in the box and put the box on a shelf?
I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles but never end up buying any because I don’t find any that I’d like to frame when I’m done, nor do I want my walls covered by dozens of framed puzzles.
It also seems like a waste to just put it back in the box and put the box on a shelf; and I also don’t want my shelves stacked with dozens of boxes of puzzles.
In the ~18 years I’ve lived in my house, I bought, assembled, framed and hung one - it’s a collection of all the Simpsons characters that existed up to that point in time - and assembled, disassembled, re-boxed and shelved one that a roommate brought and left here.
I haven’t bought, found, acquired - let alone assembled - any others, even though I’ve been tempted often, just because I have no desire to collect them.
So here’s what I’m really wondering - anyone know of any kind of jigsaw puzzle exchange group?
I think it’d be handy and fun if you could assemble a puzzle, admire your handiwork, the put the puzzle back in the box and trade it for a different one.
I’ve never heard of such a thing before but, in this day and age, if you think of something, chances are that someone else thought of it first.
Of course, I wrote all of this before bothering to google the concept, so I’ll go and do that now.

Do libraries ever lend puzzles? Because that also seems like a good idea that someone must’ve already had.
Ok, so yeah - libraries loaning puzzles is also a thing, but I’m not sure I want to touch one that has been handled as often as those must be.

BTW - I have a cheap, folding card table that I use for any projects that need a large, flat surface.
It’s got a soft, cushioned top, so I also have a large piece of scrap 1/8" plywood that I can put on top, if necessary.
@DennisG2014 I have built… I don’t know, several dozen puzzles… maybe over a hundred-ish? I have never framed one. I finish them, leave them on the table for a day or two to admire the fruits of my efforts, then pile them back in the box. I have traded a few with friends and associates who enjoy puzzling, but most are donated to the charity shop near my office. I have sold a few in yard sales, but most are donated.
I won’t buy a puzzle at full price. I look for the bargains. Maybe it’s a design I wouldn’t otherwise choose for $15, but at $3? Absolutely. And for three bucks you get a few hours of relaxation and enjoyment. Then if you don’t want to keep it, donate it, toss it into the recycle bin or give it to a friend. You definitely got your moneys worth.
The one I posted above is definitely on the top end of my spend limit for puzzles. I was intrigued by this one because it’s 1,000 pieces (I usually stick to 300 or 500 pc puzzles), because it’s a brand name I’ve never built, and because it promises “extra large pieces”. So I’m curious enough to drop $11 on this one. But usually I stick to the $3 to $5 bargains ($12-$15 regular price, sale or clearanced to $3-$5).
My last bit of wisdom: Building a jigsaw puzzle is not like watching a movie. You’ve seen the movie, you know the movie, maybe you’ll watch it again, but it’s the same movie. Building a puzzle is a bit different. It’s not like you will memorize all the pieces and know exactly where they belong. I have a couple that I’ve built two or three times and it’s still relaxing and enjoyable.
BTW, my current new-in-box waiting to be build puzzle queue is 22. 23 once this one arrives. I have a puzzle problem. More puzzles than free time!

I have a couple sheets of Coroplast, taped with duct tape on one edge that I put on my padded folding table. If I need to take a puzzle break for a day or two, I can fold the second sheet over the top and it keeps the pieces from wondering away or getting dusty like that one time at band camp when I built a 1,000 piece puzzle and it went on for three weekends.

@DennisG2014 Usually when I find the cheap puzzles I post them here.
I find the deals a few different ways. I check SD several times a day and have notification options set there. But the hot bargains often sell out before I receive a notification, so manual checking is the most reliable method. There are other similar sites I haven’t really had much success with like Brad’s Deals, Cheapskate and whatnot.
I also have a bot that checks pricing based on keywords and stows the data into a SQL database for parsing and comparison.
Finally, I just do a hard target search. Most retailers provide “wish list” capability, so I load up my lists with stuff I’m interested in (tools, electronics, automotive stuff, puzzles, whatever) and peruse my wish lists when I’m bored or have time to kill, taking note of any bargains and beginning the process of trying to talk myself out of spending money.
@mike808 is going to have a conniption over yet another uni-tasker but I’m first sucker on this Lasting Charm Meat Tenderizer over on sellout today. I do lovelovelove chicken-fried steak so I hope this will facilitate making them.
@therealjrn I have a very similar device. It makes chuck steak actually edible. I usually rub on some seasoning before jabbing the steak, then another rubdown with seasoning before cooking.

One of my favourite party pranks was to shoot a few minutes of video of the empty bathroom from a high angle before anyone showed up.
The first time someone used the facilities I would gather everyone else in front of the TV. When the person came out of the bathroom we would all be watching the video I took earlier of the vacant loo. But of course the victim would believe it was a live CCTV feed and we all just watched them do their doo… er, duty. We were able to repeat the gag several times throughout the evening as new guests arrived.
It was generally well received by the target after we let on it was just a gag… until that one girl was so upset she called the police and demanded to file a complaint for molestation of privacy.
Thankfully, after showing the coppers the gag they were able to convince her it really was a prank.

I figured since @RiotDemon shamed me into getting two (2) working toilets in my home I’d dress up the guest bath a little.
First, I do own a few DeWalt tools, and my lunch bag is DeWalt branded, though I am not a DeWalt fanboi. If you cut me I do not bleed yellow and black.
DeWalt is owned by Stanley B+D. So basically DeWalt hand tools are Stanley, DeWalt power tools are Black + Decker. However, tools sold under the DeWalt nameplate are generally a bit more premium, though not the be-all-end-all of tools like many believe. But they are usually decent tools.
This set is a fair price for what you get. DeWalt sockets are, for the most part, 6-point sockets. Which is a good thing. Even their 1/2" drive sockets are 6-point which is uncommon. The fit and finish is usually good to excellent on their hand tools. Durability is good, socket and wrench fit is acceptable.
Keep in mind: of the 226 pieces, you’re going to wind up with around 80 pieces of filler. Allen wrenches and screwdriver bits which manufacturers inevetibly throw into socket sets to drive up the piece count, most of which you will never use. Still, this is a fair price for what you get. Maybe even a good value considering you also get the ToughSystem large toolbox with an MSRP around $50. But this isn’t a set for the average homeowner. If you fuss about with cars or motorcycles, this would be a good fit for you. Other than that you’re probably not going to get much use from this set.

@tinamarie1974 Those power block things you need for some electronics. After awhile they all look alike and it’s a pain in the ass to match them to the right equipment later.
Cancel your Prime subscription. When you have to leave the house, then go deal with Walmart, you will suddenly find yourself weighing how much you really need whatever you’re after. That hoopty Saran Wrap solution quickly becomes more palatable.
I have a friend who got a bunch of gold and silver permanent sharpies. When he gets another one of this black anonymous power bricks, he uses the one of the gold or silver sharpies to label them (by writing on them), as soon as he is sure the item isn’t a return.
A tape or sticky label doesn’t work well, since the bricks get hot when used. (The adhesive tends to melt smd get sticky and horrible.)
The sharpie marking is legible and it lasts, so I also started doing this.
Douglas Adams (the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author) wrote a quite funny essay on these horrible anonymous power blocks.
I think I read this essay in the posthumously published DA compilation, The Salmon of Doubt? Was worth the read, of course.
They are often specific to a single device. But, after a few years, what goes with what? Do i still even own whatever was powered by a given power brick?
That’s the point of permanently labeling these little fuckers shortly after first acquiring them; to be able to match them up to their designated devices later.
@Barney@f00l You would be surprised to see how few variances there really are in them. Note the gine print of the V (Voltage, commonly 5V, 12V, or 19V) and A (Amperage, commonly 1.2A).
If the V and A match, you’re good. Then there’s the plug size (diameter) and shape (center pin or center hole) to match up.
Luckily economies of scale work in favor of consolidation, and fewer differences across devices and brands because their choices are driven by suppliers, who charge more for custom and low-volume production runs. Since most electronics with a wall wart are price sensitive, if the wall wart is 30% of your component cost of a $5 BOM cost, you’re making a dent designing to the cheapest, most common wall wart a supplier has.
The problem is that, like all things, quality is tied to price in commodity manufacturing. So the cheapest wall wart will have the cheapest tansformer and components the supplier can get away with, and quality controls, consumer safety controls (UL listing or other certifying body) go out the window as added cost worth the risk of “not getting caught”.
So, if you have mulitples, you might consider keeping/using only the quality ones (measure or are for an item of a reliable electronics brand known for quality).
@mike808 I just finished labeling all my a/c adapters that I’ve collected throughout the years and there are more differences than you can imagine.
Your comment about matching V and A is close but you really only need to match V and the A listed on the adapter needs to be equal to or larger than original.
I had adapters that output AC and some DC. The majority of them were 12V but I did have many 6V and 5V. Surprisingly, I also have many that are close to 5V but not quite such as 4.8V, 5.4V, and so on. 9V was sort of common but they were all the same one so may be a bad statistic. There were some that had higher voltages like 24V too.
Some adapters had multiple outputs such as 12V and 5V in the same device and did not use a coaxial plug but had some proprietary 4-pin connector.
Most adapters did use the coaxial connector but there were about 5 different sizes. Others had a proprietary connector and real old ones used phone plugs that can be shorted out if plugged in while power is on.
My laptop one had the largest coaxial and my Ooma uses one that’s almost microscopic. Then there’s polarity. The vast majority of them used tip positive but many from older devices did use tip negative.
If you find a 12V DC 5A adapter that has a coaxial connector and is tip is positive with an outer diameter of 5 mm and inner diameter of 2.1 mm, it can probably be used with 60% of the devices I have.
@cengland0 “throughout the years”. I have no doubt the marketplace was the wild west in the age of proprietary vendor lock-in cough Apple cough, with all manner of devices built and then the wall wart spec’ed out to whatever engineering said to use.
Now that most consumer electronics are commodity items, BOM and scale matter and engineers build to a pre-selected commodity power supply with cost constraints, and design the device within those parameters.
Since many devices in the 21st century are battery-powered, the wall warts are just chargers, and battery chemistry and configuration (# of cells) have turned most wall warts into a USB power supply. The device is constrained by battery capacity these days, and charging time is where all the variation in power needs get transferred to. i.e. more power equals bigger batteries and longer charge times instead of unique connectors (to not be interchangeable with other products with different power needs that could damage the device, and goose proprietary sales as a bonus).
I too have a drawer full of cables, adapters, power supplies for legacy devices. That reminds me, my city has a free electronics recycling event next week. Time to cull the “junk drawer” again.

@mike808 I am very familiar with the selectable voltage universal ac adapters and I have an entire box of those too. I used to work for a company that sold electronics and adapters like these so I acquired a boat-load of them.
Many devices in the 80’s didn’t always state the power requirements next to the power jack. Today that’s very common but when I sold those devices it wasn’t. Customers who lost their original adapters asked me for replacements. I had to continuity test the jack with the battery compartment to figure out the plug polarity and assume the voltage was related to the number of batteries. Have to be careful because some older devices didn’t have protection against reverse polarity or over voltage and you can damage devices.
@cengland0 Your context is different. You had/have a business selling a plethora of devices, and customers looking for replacements for a specific device.
I’m just a consumer with a junk drawer full of wall warts trying to consolidate, and reducing multiple power supplies into fewer of them is a win.
I stopped by Rockler today on my way home from the office. I’m building a gardener’s planting bench for my mom and needed some specialty hardware the big DIY stores don’t carry. I picked up this decent set of casters for a tenner.
@RiotDemon They do. And Home Depot and Lowe’s and of course Amz. I was there for some threaded biscuits and saw a stack of these casters on the table of featured sale items. A similar set from Home Depot would have been closer to $20.

@f00l Are these not MA compatible? I bought a couple titles in the iTunes store and I am able to watch them in MA, Prime Video, Apple TV… all the usual suspects. Even able to watch them in Google Play Movies & TV.

How do you watch purchased video content from the iTunes Store in an android device or watch that stuff using using the Amazon or Google video player (running on Android)?
I don’t spend any time at all figuring out how to watch content from “digital media store A” using “device Z”, if it’s not obvious up front how to do it. I just look for the official player app, unless the content is in a “universally playable format”.
I’m pretty clueless about all this. Tho I have used Roku and similar devices in the past, I currently don’t have a TV hooked up to anything.
There is AFAIK no Apple/ITunes video player that runs on android. Am I behind the times?
Maybe the solution is simple, and I’m just out of the loop.

@f00l MA = Movies Anywhere. MA allows you to link your media libraries from the popular platforms like Vudu, Google, Amazon, and create an aggregate media library which is then cross-populated back to all the linked services.
For example, I received a free digital copy of The Lego Movie from Amazon a few years ago. I created a Movies Anywhere account, linked my Amazon library to MA, linked my Google library to MA. Then The Lego Movie appeared in three libraries. MA, Prime Video, and Google Play. I can watch it in any of the 3 apps (yes, MA has their own media player also).
Currently I get cross pollination between Apple, Amazon, Google, Fandango, Vudu, and some of my stuff from the now defunct Ultraviolet service.
BUT… not all titles will swim in the stream. Due to studio license minutiae or some such crap.
@f00l@Nate311 I guess that’s kind of the primary advantage to Movies Anywhere. You can continue to use your digital echosystem of choice, but when a deal is available via a different venue, you can purchase it and it will be available back in your home echosystem. Just check before purchasing to be sure that title is MA compatible and your golden.

I own more vid content from Amazon than anything else. But I have a smattering from all over the place. Google. Vudu. Maybe Disney? Perhaps even a few from ITunes. Some other sources I forget right now?
So this Movies Anywhere service could be pretty great.
Periodically I start to make databases or spreadsheets of my video streaming stuff and where I bought it.
I start. Spend a few hours. And then never come back to the project.
Now all I need is a similar service for digital instant-download or streaming audiobooks. That would be just too great.
Altho I’ve been decent about only having a v few dup titles.
I own audiobooks from kinda all over. Some from Nook, google, e-stories, chirpbooks, perhaps some kobo; some from e-stores I can’t remember right now.
Plus an embarrassingly large audible library.
I know I can import mp3 or mp4 audiobooks into audible or iTunes or other players. But not so sure about all these other commercial sources: each has their own encryption method.
Anyway playing them is no prob on my mobile devices. Some players are better, so just ok; but the players are all at least adequate.
What I would like (in my fantasy world) is a pain-free, auto-updated, global inventory or card-catalog for my ever-growing collection.

Haven’t played it, but the game model of the Notre Dame is reportedly the best virtual reconstruction generally available. I have had the good fortune to have visited IRL, and it is/was a magnificent building, regardless of one’s personal religious beliefs.

I’ve only bought a couple of things from Anker but, in my experience, they’re one of the only brands of anything that sell their products for what they’re actually worth.
The bluetooth speaker I bought sounds exactly as good as they claimed it would (which is surprisingly good for such a small package), and the battery lasts at least as long, if not longer than what they claim.
As opposed to other brands who make audacious claims and charge outrageous prices for cheap and shoddily made products (cough Monster cough), Anker products actually seem to be the opposite - high quality at low prices.

So I said just above that I bought some earbuds from Morningsave. My wife kind of wanted some airpods, but only kind of, and I saw these. They had good reviews from what I found through Google, which is why I picked them from among the half dozen or so knockoffs that were on the site at the time even though they were on the high end of price. I used my 20% off code at $29 and was pleased enough with them that I ordered myself another set without the code.
They sound decent and the range is way better than my little rowkin or whatever little button ones I got here before. I guess that’s because the leg piece gives more room for an antenna. I left her phone in the kitchen and walked to the master bathroom before they broke up, which is three rooms away. The case also charges with a lightning cable, so if you’re an iPerson that’s a plus. The specs don’t mention that. The “wall charger” mentioned really meant “short USB cable”, which was totally ok.
Now they’re only $17, which is even better. Use that TREATME code today and they’re less than half the price I was cool with.
(The code totally should have been TREATYOSELF by the way. Missed opportunity if you ask me.)

The only problem is that I cannot find any cheap ones that are less than 1 meter long. The charging stand I have and the USB port is within inches of each other and it’s on a small table so I don’t have much room to coil up that much excess cordage.

Finished size is 34" x 23.5", this is a fairly large puzzle with larger piece sizes suitable for kids, older adults, or those like me blessed with hamfists and poor close-up vision.

The larger pieces puzzles are much easier to put together. It usually takes me three or four hours to do a standard size 300 piece puzzle, and about half that to do the larger pieces puzzles. As little as an hour to do the jumbo piece size puzzles (Ravensburger XXL pieces for example).
Ok, jigsaw-puzzlers, I have a question (or three):
What do you do with a puzzle once you complete it?
Frame it?
Take it apart, put it back in the box and put the box on a shelf?
I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles but never end up buying any because I don’t find any that I’d like to frame when I’m done, nor do I want my walls covered by dozens of framed puzzles.
It also seems like a waste to just put it back in the box and put the box on a shelf; and I also don’t want my shelves stacked with dozens of boxes of puzzles.
In the ~18 years I’ve lived in my house, I bought, assembled, framed and hung one - it’s a collection of all the Simpsons characters that existed up to that point in time - and assembled, disassembled, re-boxed and shelved one that a roommate brought and left here.
I haven’t bought, found, acquired - let alone assembled - any others, even though I’ve been tempted often, just because I have no desire to collect them.
So here’s what I’m really wondering - anyone know of any kind of jigsaw puzzle exchange group?
I think it’d be handy and fun if you could assemble a puzzle, admire your handiwork, the put the puzzle back in the box and trade it for a different one.
I’ve never heard of such a thing before but, in this day and age, if you think of something, chances are that someone else thought of it first.
Of course, I wrote all of this before bothering to google the concept, so I’ll go and do that now.

Do libraries ever lend puzzles? Because that also seems like a good idea that someone must’ve already had.
Ok, so yeah - libraries loaning puzzles is also a thing, but I’m not sure I want to touch one that has been handled as often as those must be.
Going to continue exploring this idea.
BTW - I have a cheap, folding card table that I use for any projects that need a large, flat surface.
It’s got a soft, cushioned top, so I also have a large piece of scrap 1/8" plywood that I can put on top, if necessary.
@DennisG2014 I have built… I don’t know, several dozen puzzles… maybe over a hundred-ish? I have never framed one. I finish them, leave them on the table for a day or two to admire the fruits of my efforts, then pile them back in the box. I have traded a few with friends and associates who enjoy puzzling, but most are donated to the charity shop near my office. I have sold a few in yard sales, but most are donated.
I won’t buy a puzzle at full price. I look for the bargains. Maybe it’s a design I wouldn’t otherwise choose for $15, but at $3? Absolutely. And for three bucks you get a few hours of relaxation and enjoyment. Then if you don’t want to keep it, donate it, toss it into the recycle bin or give it to a friend. You definitely got your moneys worth.
The one I posted above is definitely on the top end of my spend limit for puzzles. I was intrigued by this one because it’s 1,000 pieces (I usually stick to 300 or 500 pc puzzles), because it’s a brand name I’ve never built, and because it promises “extra large pieces”. So I’m curious enough to drop $11 on this one. But usually I stick to the $3 to $5 bargains ($12-$15 regular price, sale or clearanced to $3-$5).
My last bit of wisdom: Building a jigsaw puzzle is not like watching a movie. You’ve seen the movie, you know the movie, maybe you’ll watch it again, but it’s the same movie. Building a puzzle is a bit different. It’s not like you will memorize all the pieces and know exactly where they belong. I have a couple that I’ve built two or three times and it’s still relaxing and enjoyable.
BTW, my current new-in-box waiting to be build puzzle queue is 22. 23 once this one arrives. I have a puzzle problem. More puzzles than free time!

I have a couple sheets of Coroplast, taped with duct tape on one edge that I put on my padded folding table. If I need to take a puzzle break for a day or two, I can fold the second sheet over the top and it keeps the pieces from wondering away or getting dusty like that one time at band camp when I built a 1,000 piece puzzle and it went on for three weekends.

@DennisG2014 Usually when I find the cheap puzzles I post them here.
I find the deals a few different ways. I check SD several times a day and have notification options set there. But the hot bargains often sell out before I receive a notification, so manual checking is the most reliable method. There are other similar sites I haven’t really had much success with like Brad’s Deals, Cheapskate and whatnot.
I also have a bot that checks pricing based on keywords and stows the data into a SQL database for parsing and comparison.
Finally, I just do a hard target search. Most retailers provide “wish list” capability, so I load up my lists with stuff I’m interested in (tools, electronics, automotive stuff, puzzles, whatever) and peruse my wish lists when I’m bored or have time to kill, taking note of any bargains and beginning the process of trying to talk myself out of spending money.

One of my favourite party pranks was to shoot a few minutes of video of the empty bathroom from a high angle before anyone showed up.
The first time someone used the facilities I would gather everyone else in front of the TV. When the person came out of the bathroom we would all be watching the video I took earlier of the vacant loo. But of course the victim would believe it was a live CCTV feed and we all just watched them do their doo… er, duty. We were able to repeat the gag several times throughout the evening as new guests arrived.
It was generally well received by the target after we let on it was just a gag… until that one girl was so upset she called the police and demanded to file a complaint for molestation of privacy.
Thankfully, after showing the coppers the gag they were able to convince her it really was a prank.

Ok, so here’s this on that…
First, I do own a few DeWalt tools, and my lunch bag is DeWalt branded, though I am not a DeWalt fanboi. If you cut me I do not bleed yellow and black.
DeWalt is owned by Stanley B+D. So basically DeWalt hand tools are Stanley, DeWalt power tools are Black + Decker. However, tools sold under the DeWalt nameplate are generally a bit more premium, though not the be-all-end-all of tools like many believe. But they are usually decent tools.
This set is a fair price for what you get. DeWalt sockets are, for the most part, 6-point sockets. Which is a good thing. Even their 1/2" drive sockets are 6-point which is uncommon. The fit and finish is usually good to excellent on their hand tools. Durability is good, socket and wrench fit is acceptable.
Keep in mind: of the 226 pieces, you’re going to wind up with around 80 pieces of filler. Allen wrenches and screwdriver bits which manufacturers inevetibly throw into socket sets to drive up the piece count, most of which you will never use. Still, this is a fair price for what you get. Maybe even a good value considering you also get the ToughSystem large toolbox with an MSRP around $50. But this isn’t a set for the average homeowner. If you fuss about with cars or motorcycles, this would be a good fit for you. Other than that you’re probably not going to get much use from this set.
Home Depot YMMV: Husky Pneumatic 2-in-1 18 Gauge 2 in. Brad Nailer and 1/4 in. Stapler for $20 and free in-store pickup where available. Includes 200 brads and 200 staples.

I have a friend who got a bunch of gold and silver permanent sharpies. When he gets another one of this black anonymous power bricks, he uses the one of the gold or silver sharpies to label them (by writing on them), as soon as he is sure the item isn’t a return.
A tape or sticky label doesn’t work well, since the bricks get hot when used. (The adhesive tends to melt smd get sticky and horrible.)
The sharpie marking is legible and it lasts, so I also started doing this.
Douglas Adams (the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author) wrote a quite funny essay on these horrible anonymous power blocks.
I think I read this essay in the posthumously published DA compilation, The Salmon of Doubt? Was worth the read, of course.

They are often specific to a single device. But, after a few years, what goes with what? Do i still even own whatever was powered by a given power brick?
That’s the point of permanently labeling these little fuckers shortly after first acquiring them; to be able to match them up to their designated devices later.

@Barney @f00l You would be surprised to see how few variances there really are in them. Note the gine print of the V (Voltage, commonly 5V, 12V, or 19V) and A (Amperage, commonly 1.2A).
If the V and A match, you’re good. Then there’s the plug size (diameter) and shape (center pin or center hole) to match up.
Luckily economies of scale work in favor of consolidation, and fewer differences across devices and brands because their choices are driven by suppliers, who charge more for custom and low-volume production runs. Since most electronics with a wall wart are price sensitive, if the wall wart is 30% of your component cost of a $5 BOM cost, you’re making a dent designing to the cheapest, most common wall wart a supplier has.
The problem is that, like all things, quality is tied to price in commodity manufacturing. So the cheapest wall wart will have the cheapest tansformer and components the supplier can get away with, and quality controls, consumer safety controls (UL listing or other certifying body) go out the window as added cost worth the risk of “not getting caught”.
So, if you have mulitples, you might consider keeping/using only the quality ones (measure or are for an item of a reliable electronics brand known for quality).
@mike808 I just finished labeling all my a/c adapters that I’ve collected throughout the years and there are more differences than you can imagine.
Your comment about matching V and A is close but you really only need to match V and the A listed on the adapter needs to be equal to or larger than original.
I had adapters that output AC and some DC. The majority of them were 12V but I did have many 6V and 5V. Surprisingly, I also have many that are close to 5V but not quite such as 4.8V, 5.4V, and so on. 9V was sort of common but they were all the same one so may be a bad statistic. There were some that had higher voltages like 24V too.
Some adapters had multiple outputs such as 12V and 5V in the same device and did not use a coaxial plug but had some proprietary 4-pin connector.
Most adapters did use the coaxial connector but there were about 5 different sizes. Others had a proprietary connector and real old ones used phone plugs that can be shorted out if plugged in while power is on.
My laptop one had the largest coaxial and my Ooma uses one that’s almost microscopic. Then there’s polarity. The vast majority of them used tip positive but many from older devices did use tip negative.
If you find a 12V DC 5A adapter that has a coaxial connector and is tip is positive with an outer diameter of 5 mm and inner diameter of 2.1 mm, it can probably be used with 60% of the devices I have.
@cengland0 “throughout the years”. I have no doubt the marketplace was the wild west in the age of proprietary vendor lock-in cough Apple cough, with all manner of devices built and then the wall wart spec’ed out to whatever engineering said to use.
Now that most consumer electronics are commodity items, BOM and scale matter and engineers build to a pre-selected commodity power supply with cost constraints, and design the device within those parameters.
Since many devices in the 21st century are battery-powered, the wall warts are just chargers, and battery chemistry and configuration (# of cells) have turned most wall warts into a USB power supply. The device is constrained by battery capacity these days, and charging time is where all the variation in power needs get transferred to. i.e. more power equals bigger batteries and longer charge times instead of unique connectors (to not be interchangeable with other products with different power needs that could damage the device, and goose proprietary sales as a bonus).
I too have a drawer full of cables, adapters, power supplies for legacy devices. That reminds me, my city has a free electronics recycling event next week. Time to cull the “junk drawer” again.

@mike808 I am very familiar with the selectable voltage universal ac adapters and I have an entire box of those too. I used to work for a company that sold electronics and adapters like these so I acquired a boat-load of them.
Many devices in the 80’s didn’t always state the power requirements next to the power jack. Today that’s very common but when I sold those devices it wasn’t. Customers who lost their original adapters asked me for replacements. I had to continuity test the jack with the battery compartment to figure out the plug polarity and assume the voltage was related to the number of batteries. Have to be careful because some older devices didn’t have protection against reverse polarity or over voltage and you can damage devices.
This is what mine looks like:

I do most of my media consumption on iOS. But I still won’t buy from Apple. For that reason.

How do you watch purchased video content from the iTunes Store in an android device or watch that stuff using using the Amazon or Google video player (running on Android)?
I don’t spend any time at all figuring out how to watch content from “digital media store A” using “device Z”, if it’s not obvious up front how to do it. I just look for the official player app, unless the content is in a “universally playable format”.
I’m pretty clueless about all this. Tho I have used Roku and similar devices in the past, I currently don’t have a TV hooked up to anything.
There is AFAIK no Apple/ITunes video player that runs on android. Am I behind the times?
Maybe the solution is simple, and I’m just out of the loop.
But since I was not sure that iTunes vid content could be watched on android, I thought I’d better mention my uncertainty.
@f00l MA = Movies Anywhere. MA allows you to link your media libraries from the popular platforms like Vudu, Google, Amazon, and create an aggregate media library which is then cross-populated back to all the linked services.
For example, I received a free digital copy of The Lego Movie from Amazon a few years ago. I created a Movies Anywhere account, linked my Amazon library to MA, linked my Google library to MA. Then The Lego Movie appeared in three libraries. MA, Prime Video, and Google Play. I can watch it in any of the 3 apps (yes, MA has their own media player also).
Currently I get cross pollination between Apple, Amazon, Google, Fandango, Vudu, and some of my stuff from the now defunct Ultraviolet service.
BUT… not all titles will swim in the stream. Due to studio license minutiae or some such crap.

I’d never heard of Movies Anywhere. That sounds useful, since I am always forgetting what I own and who I bought it from.
Kinda like having a Plex setup, or whatever, for streaming services, without all the “maintenance bother”.

@f00l @Nate311 I guess that’s kind of the primary advantage to Movies Anywhere. You can continue to use your digital echosystem of choice, but when a deal is available via a different venue, you can purchase it and it will be available back in your home echosystem. Just check before purchasing to be sure that title is MA compatible and your golden.

I own more vid content from Amazon than anything else. But I have a smattering from all over the place. Google. Vudu. Maybe Disney? Perhaps even a few from ITunes. Some other sources I forget right now?
So this Movies Anywhere service could be pretty great.
Periodically I start to make databases or spreadsheets of my video streaming stuff and where I bought it.
I start. Spend a few hours. And then never come back to the project.
Now all I need is a similar service for digital instant-download or streaming audiobooks. That would be just too great.
Altho I’ve been decent about only having a v few dup titles.

I own audiobooks from kinda all over. Some from Nook, google, e-stories, chirpbooks, perhaps some kobo; some from e-stores I can’t remember right now.
Plus an embarrassingly large audible library.
I know I can import mp3 or mp4 audiobooks into audible or iTunes or other players. But not so sure about all these other commercial sources: each has their own encryption method.
Anyway playing them is no prob on my mobile devices. Some players are better, so just ok; but the players are all at least adequate.
What I would like (in my fantasy world) is a pain-free, auto-updated, global inventory or card-catalog for my ever-growing collection.

Haven’t played it, but the game model of the Notre Dame is reportedly the best virtual reconstruction generally available. I have had the good fortune to have visited IRL, and it is/was a magnificent building, regardless of one’s personal religious beliefs.
