If you don’t have a Dutch oven, get one of these. Great price and these are incredibly useful items. I use it for so much more than I ever thought I would. The price is fantastic.
Dutch oven – Something smells:
. Fantastic (what is that?)
. Awful (who did that?)
. Interesting (what is that?)
. Toxic (who did that?)
. I’ll explain the word “umami” in the comments
@mcanavino You’re close, but according to my boss’s sister-in-laws’s neighbor (who lived next door to someone who planted tulips), ‘going Dutch’ meant that the one person would typically buy the pot, and the other would buy the lid.
If bought all three sizes and you’ve got serious completism issues like me, you can also pick up the smallest one in this series, the BK 2-cup mini dutch oven in matching blue or black, here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08C35V2R1
@boygenius1991 Just be aware that these are carbon steel, not cast iron, and are therefore like the enameled pots of yesteryear, before aluminum displaced steel as the standard cookware in the 1940s to 1950s. But you are most probably too young to know that bit. They are considerably lighter than a cast iron pot.
Edit: Oh, I see. Yes, I got one of the ugly green ones in an IRK. I love it (and the price was right).
It’s the biggest pot I have, so I’ve mainly used it to make stews. It’s not too heavy, like a normal Dutch Oven. Yes, I’m a wimp. I’m planning on doing some other things with it, if only I can remember what.
@boygenius1991@tinamarie1974 Nathan is feeling neglected because my IRKs are coming by FedEx. I keep telling him that I’m not ignoring him, but I’m not sure he believes me.
@boygenius1991@tinamarie1974 Haha, I’ll talk to him about it. But remember, he barely survived the 700 pounds of pasta that was sent to my house and he had to carry to my porch. I don’t think he will be too excited to hear about your plans.
I have a 6 quart lodge, and I love the fiddle sticks out of it! However im only usualy cooking for two. The 6 qt is great for hosting, but I don’t like to use it otherwise.
General rule of thumb, 1 quart equals 1 serving. So for a family of 4, you’d want 4 quarts. I picked the 3.5 qt so we can each have a serving, and left overs for work lunches.
@SputnikHQ Yes, the specs mention that, both here & in the Amazon listing. On a side note, several people mentioned they feel safer using this type over cast iron on their cooktops due to the lighter weight.
@ircon96@SputnikHQ@Trinityscrew
They probably say safer since cast iron is so heavy, especially when full of food, moving it on a glass/induction stovetop can be difficult. People have cracked their stovetops by dropping/sliding heavy cast iron pots. That’s why I just ordered one of these. My cast iron 5 qt dutch oven works well, but is plain cast iron. This will look better for serving and be lighter to move.
@SputnikHQ@Trinityscrew Thanks, @caramelarrow … Exactly this. Glad to get an explanation from someone who has personal experience with induction, as I’m still using old-school LP gas.
Yes, they are enameled carbon steel. Not, they are not the crap, thin sheet metal of the speckled-blue “traditional” enamel cookware you might recall from your past. At least, I hope it’s your past. These are reasonably hefty, just not all the way up to the decent-boat-anchor level of Cuisinart or Lodge. Do they work well? Yes, as long as you are allow for the fact that they heat and cool down faster than the massive ones - which is often an advantage when you hit that disturbing “Oh, crap, it’s starting to scorch on the bottom” point.
@Badpookey Carbon steel is still far and away better than stainless in its heating characteristics, though. And as long as there is enough steel, it’s hard to tell the difference between that and cast iron. With cast, you know you’re going to be dealing with significant mass - and significant heat-sinking “features” - which aren’t always in your favor.
I bought the medium size last time (the green color is much nicer in person). I always second-guess myself, so I spent much time regretting that I hadn’t bought the large size instead. However, it turns out that the medium works perfectly for me and this has become a true favorite among my pots and pans. My MIL noticed it the last time she was over, knew the brand and was very impressed. I ordered the large size in blue last night.
I already have a 7-qt Cuisinart cast iron dutch oven that I’ve never used because it’s too damned heavy.
@medonsw We have the 7Qt Cuis and the next size down, and they sit in the cupboard nested together a lot, but they also get a fair amount of use. I will somewhat sheepishly admit that this kitchen is a little overequipped for just two people, and about to be made worse because yeah, I had to get the 2.5Q BK for some other stuff I plan to do. (I have three woks. Don’t ask why.)
I have a small 2.5 which is good for 2 people meals I am excited that this deal showed up and actually seems like a decent product if not a good product based on the Amazon reviews. Will probably not get used until the fall but I feel some good stews in my future!
Can I just get the box pictured in the second to last picture? I would rather display the words “The Original Dutch Dutch Oven” than the actual cooking pot!

Otherwise, these are nice looking pans. I would’ve preferred the green but the blue is very pretty. The larger pan has a sort of a smooshed spot in the stainless (?) rim of the pot but that probably wouldn’t affect the functionality.
6 months To receiving it, and I only use it about 3 times a month, The paint has chipped off a handle revealing metal. It says it comes with limited lifetime warranty but is there a way I can pursue a replacement for it through MEH?
I love this Dutch oven, Have used it about once or twice a month since May. But the enamel has come off of the handle so that looks crummy. It says lifetime warranty but idk how or where to get it replaced

Shouldn’t the poll question have been:
Dutch oven – Something smells:

. Interesting (what is that?)

Is this where the Dutch make their stroopwafels?
@awk Just the caramel.
/giphy dutch oven

I am astonished to see something here tonight that doesn’t suck! Bravo, meh!
I’ve frequently wished I had a Dutch oven, just not the kind I’ve received to date.
Buy!
The phase “going dutch” to mean each paying your own way actually came from Dutch ovens.
When they initially were sold locally, the pot and lid were sold separately to show the higher quality vs cheaper imported versions.
This to “go Dutch” meant you were choosing to pay for each part separately and buy a local Dutch product.
This is definitely true and should not be fact checked in any way.
@mcanavino You’re close, but according to my boss’s sister-in-laws’s neighbor (who lived next door to someone who planted tulips), ‘going Dutch’ meant that the one person would typically buy the pot, and the other would buy the lid.

My idea of going Dutch does not include pot. Hmm, maybe that is my problem.
@hchavers I take it you have never been to the Netherlands, where pot has been legal in “coffeeshops” since 1976.
/giphy fart bed

Which came first, the dutch oven or the “dutch oven”?
these are beauts. I already have a cuisinart dutch oven. Is there a reason to get these? does anyone have one? do you like it?
@boygenius1991 I think @barney scored one in an Irk. Maybe she can provide her thoughts?
@Barney @boygenius1991 @tinamarie1974 Barney is a she?!!

@Barney @boygenius1991 poor Nathan, I bet we could come up with some heavy things to mail you to make sure he feels appreciated!!

Can you say the weight of these? I need the info for ultralight backpacking planning. Oh ok, really to have a sense of the thermal capacity. Thanks.
@phr Looks like the are 4.0, 5.9 and 8.0 lbs
This is a great deal, not a meh deal. Thanks, meh!

Will they work on induction cooktop?
@SputnikHQ Yes, the specs mention that, both here & in the Amazon listing. On a side note, several people mentioned they feel safer using this type over cast iron on their cooktops due to the lighter weight.

@werehatrack Yes, there are advantages to steel over iron but there are solid reasons for pots like these to be made of iron - primarily, baking.
@Badpookey @werehatrack I have no experience with this, but a lot of reviewers have mentioned these work well for baking no-knead bread.
