The next fidget thingy?
8I’ve been seeing a lot of these Bubble Burst fidget thingies lately in various shapes and sizes. I decided to get a breakfast rainbow octopus from Five Below to give it a try. While they are not nearly as satisfying as traditional bubble wrap, they are kind of fun. I was wondering if and when we might expect to see these on Meh?

Don’t stop there.
@blaineg
@blaineg @compunaut
Wonder if you could refill these with Cheez-whiz??
@chienfou @compunaut The gift that keeps on giving.
That’s a foot.
@fibrs86 I thought it looked like a foot too, but alas the packaging says it’s an octopus.
Well meh does have the incentive to give some unsold ones to @felton10 to go with his bubble wrap collection. I believe they were also mentioned in one of those threads on varieties of bubble wrap too. So meh knows about them if someone from meh actually reads all the threads.
@Kidsandliz I got 2 of those in my last IRK along with bubble wrap.
I got something similar but in a less exciting shape and color a couple of weeks ago at Ollies. As far as fidget toys go, I think they’re kinda meh. I still prefer old school fidget spinners or my Lego Technic magic cube. I would guess that Meh might have some of these meh poppers by the end of summer or maybe in the fall. Just in time for early Christmas shoppers to buy for stocking stuffers…and then clearance them out in the spring, maybe even at a price where early Halloween shoppers who like to have an alternative for candy would just at.
This has been my fidget tool for the past few weeks.
(Not my photo.)
I’m working on several different projects at once, while waiting for some parts to arrive.
@blaineg What is it going to be when you’re done?
@Kyeh A Scopetrex board is the main project.

An Atari 5200 controller and a 5200 - Playstation controller adapter are the smaller projects.

@blaineg Wow! Are you restoring them, or adapting them? I know zilch about those games. I did learn how to do some very basic printed circuit board soldering years ago when I went out with a guy who did electronic things for recording studios, but I had no clue how the boards got used or anything.
@Kyeh The Scopetrex is a fully functional clone of the Vectrex game system, minus the vector display. That’s the “scope” part of the name, you can (must) hook it up to an old oscilloscope or other X-Y vector display.
The Vectrex was the only game system with a vector display, like many of the original arcade games: Asteroids, Space War, Tempest, Battlezone, Star Wars, etc. So it’s still very popular 40 years later.
Anyway, I happen to have a 20" vector display that needs a purpose in life, so I’m building a Scopetrex.
@Kyeh The Atari 5200 is similar vintage, and the successor to the original Atari 2600.
The controllers have non-centering analog joysticks, which are great for a few games, and terrible for many others. They also used poor quality flex circuits that frequently failed. So controller upgrades & replacements are a big thing for 5200 owners.
Both the boards were created by Scott Baker, and then someone else on the Atari Age forums created the 3D printed shell.
When I dug out my 5200 I found I had nothing that could display it. It only has RF video output, with an oddball integrated power supply/automatic switchbox. Not even composite video out!
(Remember video games only on Channel 3?)
But I found a couple of video output mods. One adds composite, the other does DVI, which is trivial to convert to HDMI. So besides the controllers, I will be doing several mods to the console.
@blaineg @Kyeh none of your tv’s have a coax input?
I DEFINITELY remember that modulator…
grew up with an…Atari XE series PC/Game System.
@earlyre @Kyeh Yea, but SWMBO’s TV is off limits.
Here’s the 5200’s weirdo switchbox. The cable is power to and signal from the console. When you turn the console on, the box automatically switches from antenna to game.
Cool trick, but without the special box, you’re out of luck.
My nieces have been using these for the last 2 years, along with the majority of their friends. That’s why they’ve made it to 5 Below, they’re not exactly a current gadget anymore . So yes, I expect Meh to start selling them anytime.
@punkynpye Dang, played with one just last night for the very first time. It is a bit big to carry around much.
@raccoon81
I think they’re meant to sit on kids desks and use quietly while they’re in school. That’s what the kids tell me anyway.
My daughter has been asking for one of these things for what feels like over 6 months. Her birthday is next week and she is getting one.
The best of both fidget worlds. Perfect for a Meh offering.
