The Big Easter Storm... {Necropost}
7Hope you folks who already are dealing with this storm (that is supposed to track across much of the USA today and tomorrow) are surviving it OK. It just arrived here as I type. I can see out my window that high winds are whipping the trees around big time, thunder… The TV programming was just interrupted with a tornado warning and the weather guy is enjoying his 15 seconds of fame… (well more likely his 10 hours of fame today). Storms are apparently traveling at around 50mph and most of it is still next door in LA, AR… The weather map looks ugly.
I moved my car to the hospital parking garage down the street in case the large hail predicted actually hits here. Got lucky and have one of the partly underground spots where there is a solid wall by my car and not the open one on the far end of that floor (parking garage is on the side of a hill).
Hope people are missed by the predicted tornadoes, wind sheer, and large hail.
Edit: holy crap somewhere or other has winds of 100mph. Good luck everyone in its path yesterday, today or in the future.

This is the view down my street right now!
@Kyeh I have wood cross country skis. Can I come and play? I miss going out the door and skiing away. No snow here in years.
@Kyeh sssooooo pretty
@Kyeh Wow super nice. Sometimes I miss winter and winter sports, then other times I think… hey, it’s mid-march, lets plant the veggies and go swimming in the cement pond after a dip in the hot tub…
@chienfou Everyone here was gardening yesterday when it got up into the high 60s - but we can’t ever plant anything vulnerable until after Mother’s Day - that’s the mantra for this region!
@Kyeh northern MN?
@chienfou No - Colorado!
@Kyeh used to live in Boulder and can remember it being in the 60s a few days in Jan or Feb each year… Then the Chinook winds… Used to ski A basin in shorts and t shirt in late May early June…
@chienfou Oh, did you? Yes, it’s crazy changeable but at least the snow usually doesn’t stick around very long. At least we’re getting some good moisture so maybe fires won’t be a problem this summer.
@Kyeh Wow, absolutely beautiful!!! I haven’t seen snow in several years…so breathtaking!
We hit a record on Easter down here.
91 degrees.
@llangley 91 degrees!? Yikes! Meanwhile here it’s 21 today. It IS pretty but kind of weird having Christmas card weather in April.
@llangley
What it looks like right now. The ruler is stuck into snow on top of my recycling bin.
@Kyeh @llangley Looks like the pavement was warm enough it didn’t stick on (based on the street and your sidewalks) or was that shoveling action? PITA is it was as that looks like wet snow. Nice and heavy. But also nice for snowmen and snowball fights.
@Kidsandliz @llangley Your first guess is right - it was really warm Sat., high 60s, and the snow is actually very dry and light! It’s supposed to warm up to the 40s tomorrow so it should melt fast.
I’m glad to hear you escaped the worst of the crazy weather you’ve been having!
@Kyeh That pic would make a great Christmas card! (The first one… duh…!)
@Kyeh So pretty!
@cf1 Thanks!
Missed it here, but not calling it “Easter Egg sized hail” seems like a missed opportunity.
“Massive Easter storm system threatens 95 million, includes tornadoes and tennis ball-size hail.”
@blaineg Tennis balls are larger than Easter eggs though. Maybe if the hail was a little smaller.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There’s a park a few blocks away where people make a cross country ski track in the winter when the snow gets solid enough! Right now though some of the mountain counties are barring anyone but locals from coming in, because their medical facilities are minimal and they were getting flooded with people who want to play up there while they’re supposed to be staying home.
@Kyeh our “whitless” Governor made it illegal for state residents to travel to their summer homes in state… but perfectly legal for out of state folks to come to their summer homes in our state. Huh?
@RedOak ¯_(ツ)_/¯ !?!
Power surges can come from the electric company, not just from God throwing down a lightning bolt at your building.
You can also unplug your phone lines and coaxial TV/Internet cable too just to be safe.
My brother who was an electrician before he died (not from electricity–he drowned tragically) always had us unplug everything and put the ends of the coax from the wall into glass jars when we would leave the lake house.
@therealjrn I forgot to ask you. Why in glass jars? Because they aren’t flammable? Or do they do something else too?
@therealjrn sorry cor your loss. That is a terrible way to be taken.
@therealjrn @tinamarie1974
No kidding. What a terrible loss.
@f00l @tinamarie1974 Thank you. Our family has never been the same since.
@Kidsandliz Because glass won’t conduct the electricity sparks God is throwing down the lines and burn down the unattended house.
Well I thought we got of scott free around here. Nope. Somewhere the power is affected as the lights are incredibly dim brown out style. I had thought something happened last night as suddenly the parking lot lights appeared to go out but I was half asleep and didn’t investigate.
@Kidsandliz glad that’s all you woke up to. Weather Channel reports are devastating this morning. So much loss, and on Easter. Stay safe!
@llangley I know. We got incredibly lucky where I live. Tornadoes elsewhere around the state and 6 died. There were moments where the wind was incredibly high and the rain pelting down so hard that you could barely see through it, but that is nothing compared to the tornadoes.
With the dimmed out lights my fridge has been off since around 11:30 last night and everything is melted in the freezer and room temperature in the fridge (cheap crap appliances in this rental) but I’d take that over a tornado any day.
I just hope that as this storm carries on today through the eastern part of the USA that it loses some of its punch and the tornadoes.
@Kidsandliz @llangley Ugh, brownouts can be worse than blackouts.
Good Luck.
We had some cool thunderstorms move through last night around midnight.
I saw some podcaster talking from her bedroom on CNN talking about it.
I just looked at the weather, we have a wind advisory till 8 tonight for high winds and power outages with a quarter inch of rain. Calm right now.
@star2236 seems weird to have a 1/4 inch of rain be part of the forecast for bad weather… locally we call that ‘dew’… looking at the radar map it looks like it might track north of us as it curls east. WTForecast is calling for 100% chance of rain later tonight, Weatherbug is all “what rain?”
I think they are just flipping a coin…
@chienfou
Isn’t that what they do everyday, just flip a coin?
@star2236 only if the Ouija board is on the blink…
@chienfou @star2236 One of the local stations has tacitly acknowledged “looking out the window” and has a “weather porch” where they do their broadcasts.
@blaineg @star2236
Obviously they are not using the newest technology:
@blaineg @chienfou
That’s awesome.
POKER! JOKER! NOT MEDIOCRE! AWESOME!
@ouenShort @Star2236 What was your biggest holiday? Did you serve SPAM?
It is 3:15pm and it is as dark outside as it is before sunset. So far everything but wind has missed us. Based on the sky I think perhaps that luck is about ready to end. Guess I better start unplugging things as I haven’t seen any lightening rods on the roof of this building.
@Kidsandliz this is the time where surge protectors and UPS systems earn their keep!
@chienfou I have surge protectors - just taking added precautions just in case. Building is around 50 years old and the electrical has never been updated. Actually so far we’ve been pretty lucky in that no storm has been directly overhead when there has been thunder and lightening. Really heavy rain and high winds at times but that’s about it so far. Elsewhere in the state multiple tornadoes. I sure hope this calms down by the time it hits the states east and north east of us. Dealing with this in the middle of the night will be no fun for those folks.
Once I was home (when I lived in VA) and the house vanished into a lightening ball. All I could see is opaque white out all the windows (cats were traumatized for life - they jumped off the table looking out the window a second before it all happened, did that drag the belly on the ground run and vanished). The neighbor was on her porch and said she couldn’t see the house at all and was surprised it was still standing when the lightening ball vanished; I was puzzled about what made everything go opaque white out windows on 3 sides of the house until the thunder shook the house so hard pictures fell off the wall. Then I figured out we had been hit by lightening.
Lightening rod was melted. Some slate shingles on the ground…Not one electrical thing in the house ruined. Amazing. The cause of this was a water spout (tornado that starts over water) had come ashore, touched down in the back yard of the house immediately behind me and took out about 10 houses. I had been very lucky.
@chienfou @Kidsandliz OMG!!!
So it was not Easter, but we have the potential for a bit of SNOW very early on Wednesday
@tinamarie1974 I think there’s a thread for blaming a scapegoat if that happens.
@chienfou is why you didn’t get an IRK.
@mike808 there will be serious blame levied should we wake up to snow.
@chienfou is definitely the problem here.
@tinamarie1974 Us too and we didn’t even have snow at all this winter.
@mike808 @tinamarie1974
hmmm, snow + stay at home order… not sure that will equal blame, but go ahead… bring it on!
@chienfou is definitely to blame for… whatever this is.
@chienfou @mike808 only because I have to work and cannot go outside and play!!
#firstworldproblems
@sammydog01 none? Terrible!
@tinamarie1974 I know, right? A few flakes that didn’t stick was all. I wanted to make a snowman.
@sammydog01 if you loved closer I would invite you to come build a snow man and have some hot chocolate!
@sammydog01 @tinamarie1974
Freudian slip?
@chienfou @sammydog01 woopsie!!
@chienfou @tinamarie1974
@sammydog01 @tinamarie1974
I made this for you guys!
(Now how do I delete the sideways one??)

@Kyeh @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974
Beg the VolMods.
@chienfou @sammydog01 oh my!!
@f00l @sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 Oh. okay, thanks.
@Kyeh @sammydog01 aaawww such a cute little snow person. Thank you!!
@sammydog01 @tinamarie1974 My pleasure! We got enough snow yesterday to put us at an all-time record high for this area!
