I’ve gotten two of these bundles from SideDeal. Not in need of a third set, but they have helped my family cut down on single use plastic bags/wrap since we mostly make lunches to go for work. The pink sandwich bags are big enough for the smaller size pre-sliced bread as a sandwich; for heartier sandwiches I opt for the larger blue bag.
Gonna pass on these. Not really necessary. Learned from a family member that all zip-top plastic bags become re-usable bags when you move to a 3rd-world country where buying more means driving a couple hours to the capitol city so you can shop with all the corrupt govt officials in the few stores that can get foreign imports…
all zip-top plastic bags can become re-usable bags
Yep flip them inside out being careful at the ends of the zip(s) then rinse/wash and hang to dry. If they need to stay airtight, then silicone > freezer bags > regular ziplocks.
Silicone bags do have two superpowers though: fruits and vegetables keep far longer in one and, as the write up mentions, they withstand heat much better.
Maybe I have an extra-sensitive sniffer, but when I put stuff in there (e.g., we put a bunch of shelled pistachios in one for a boat trip), there’s a weird siliconey? plastickey? smell that seems to transfer to the contents…
how you gonna sous vide with these? no one way valve, and water displacement technique isn’t going to work well with silicone pouches that are probably 20x thicker than ziploc
@thechinglish The 64oz 1/2 gallon work great for sous vide. Water displacement isn’t an issue. Turn them inside out and place in dishwasher for easy cleanup.
@thechinglish They work great in the sous vide. I’ve got some food-grade coated strong magnets that I sometimes use to help. One in the bag and one on the outside of the container. But I usually don’t need them. I’ve got a vacuum seal bag system but never use it for SV any more. They clean up fine in the dishwasher. (A lot of people talk about turning them inside out, but I don’t do that. I just span them across a couple of the tines.) I freeze stuff in them too. You can write on them with dry erase for that. That’s where most of them are now, since I batch cook. I paid a ton more for my first ones, bought some the last time they were here, and think I will buy a few more right now.
@heyitslauren@jockovonred@thechinglish For the Sous Vide, I’ve only used the larger ones. I’ve used the snack ones mostly in the freezer for single servings. They might not be generally useful for everyone, but they are in my case. I use the sandwich ones for bread or buns in the freezer to avoid them going off, but for stuff I plan on toasting. A couple of pieces of bread to toast later. One hamburger bun or English muffin. Seemed a little silly at first but I don’t have to end up throwing out stale bread for the birds. They feel like they would have been too small for actual sandwiches to me. But I never tried it. I do use also the sandwich ones for things like stews or chilis or sauces. Once I actually trusted that the seals would work, I was fine using them for that. They are pretty space-saving that way. I learned that I needed to write on them with dry erase (which wipes off pretty easily) or I’d end up with a mystery bag though. If they weren’t dishwasher safe, I wouldn’t have bought more. They were a pain to clean out manually.
@hchavers I use a scrub daddy sponge with warm soap & water then put them upside down on a drying rack with the rest of the dishes to dry… I like them.
@hchavers I wash mine in the dishwasher. Span them across a couple of the tines so they are open at the bottom. Dry them on a bamboo peg rack thing that I got dirt cheap.
“sandwich raspberry”
??
Who the heck puts raspberries in their sandwiches?
Must be something from Gwyneth Paltrow (you know, the “smells like my raspberry” person).
Used them for work at my restaurant to make fake meat and whatnot. These things are sturdy and expensive. Great deal on these and in a non professional setting these will last anyone a long long time.
Oven-safe up to 425 degrees, if you can believe it (which would make them perfect for sous vide cooking)
Who in the hell sous vides at 425 degrees? The fundamental principal behind sous vide is that you never heat the water any higher than the food should be heated - e.g., low 130s for rare beef, 165 for ‘safe’ chicken or pork.
@rpstrong i think mentioning the high temp was saying that these fit into the range of sous vide cooking well. Heck, at a max of 425 you could roast carrots in these things in the oven.
After I clicked Buy It, I found this isn’t the arrangement I thought. I thought you pay $29.99 and get 12x 12oz Snack Raspberry, 8x 28oz Sandwich Raspberry, 6x 64oz 1/2 Gallon Clear, and 6x 64oz 1/2 Gallon Aqua. Nope, you have to pick one.
These are detailed better here than on the main page - in a comment that is now normally hidden.
But one of the options is 2x 12oz Snack Raspberry, 4x 28oz Sandwich Raspberry, 1x 64oz 1/2 Gallon Clear, 1x 64oz 1/2 Gallon Aqua - which is not listed on the main page. I’ll get that one.
Has anyone used these for sous vide? I like the idea of something reusable but when I’ve tried this previously I didn’t have a lot of success getting all of the air out, even using the water displacement method (though it was smaller than a half gal)
Edit; and I saw the comments from the other folks who use these. It’s just that meh had hidden them!!! Ugh censorship am I rite
You mean because of your account settings?
if so, go to the page-top menu and

select “Your Account” /
scroll down to “Forum Settings” and hit the “Edit” button /
under “Display Mode” note your current selection (just in case) and then you can select “Firehose” and see EVERYTHiNG all at once.
Interesting - if your Stasher bags get damaged, don’t throw them in the trash; but don’t try to put them in regular recycling either, because they aren’t technically plastic. Instead, you can send them back to the company for them to recycle: https://www.stasherbag.com/pages/repurpose-program

Also worth mentioning that the large size gets the most use by far!
@jcpseattle good share!

@katbyter That’s how they can afford free shipping.

@Skipbidder @thechinglish magnets? I just put in some of the lead weights out of my tackle box to weigh the food down.
@jockovonred @thechinglish @skipbidder which size are you using? Is it the half gallon ones only? I’m just wondering if I’m just bad at this ;_;
@heyitslauren @jockovonred @thechinglish For the Sous Vide, I’ve only used the larger ones. I’ve used the snack ones mostly in the freezer for single servings. @heyitslauren @Skipbidder @thechinglish I’m using the 64oz half gallon. Not used anything smaller but could.
Worst part about these is the store less than you would think because they have no depth
@Cerridwyn Two-dimensional bags? Larger ones would be great for carry-on.
@Cerridwyn @phendrick

@hchavers @Skipbidder pro stuff
@hchavers One squirt from Dawn Powerwash bottle + hot water, them I rub em together

@phendrick I think “sandwich raspberry” is a gesture of displeasure often heard at Subway.
@phendrick Who in the Bronx ever cheers?
@806D2701 i feed a bunch of community cats. But i’ve been running out of distinctive names for them.
Ah, “Zerbert” ! (Especially for the ones i can’t tell apart.) Thanks.
Why is nobody named Zerbert?
But, How do I get these back from my “clients” to wash and reuse? They seem to be very forgetful for some reason…
@Bumplepimp Write your name on it with a Sharpie?
I can use these to store stuff!!
