@wisenekt Yep, same here. I can't even wear a fitbit at work. This causes some consternation, as part of our health benefits rely on activity trackers, and the old, cleared tracker is no longer for sale.
I am a freelance writer and stay-at-home dad. So minus the occasional happy squeal, things are generally quiet around the "office" and I never forget my phone cable.
@Steve7654 I haven't used one in years. I was required to carry one 24/7 since the early 90's, so not having one now is wonderful. I have a free Obihai VoIP system at home.
I have an iPhone 6. The coworker I see the most has a Galaxy, the company smart phones are iPhone 4s. So my cable wouldn't help any of them out. Plus the only reason I'd have a cable with me is because it's the one I have in my car.
When I did let my daughters friend use my cable to charge her iPhone 6 at my house I never saw that cable again. She claims she has lost it now. Teenagers!
We aren't allowed to use, or charge our phones while we're on the clock, ( we can have them on us, but must be silenced, or off). So unfortunately,when i see someone charging, I'm the asshole,( every workplace has at least one) that narcs on them to a supervisor/ unplugs it at the first chance I get.
@Aznatural1 not terribly worried about it. they make the rule quite clear when you're hired, everyone has signed Multiple meeting reports acknowledging that we understand the company cell phone policy, and what the consequences are of getting caught(write ups- up to termination for chronic offenders.) and as for the being an asshole part? I am one. but i come by it honestly. I come from a Long Line of Assholes.going back to at least my Great,Great Grandfather. A little less each generation, but nonetheless.
@earlyre What's the rationale behind the "no charging" rule? Security? Stealing the company's electricity? Productivity loss? It must be an otherwise-great place to work to put up with chicken-shit rules like that. Or staffed with people desperate to have a job.
@SSteve in short, most of the above. it's union retail, Just off a college campus.
We're supposed to be focused on our work/the cusomers. Really the rule is we're not supposed to have them on us, but they allow it if it's put away, and silenced/turned off.
Even with that rule, we still have casheirs on lane texting/facebooking, etc.
And yes im sure it has something to do with the electricity, but mainly appearance to the public.
I have the large white charging device sold on here a few weeks back, starts with an I, and all those cable ends that fit nothing else except the one that works with my cell phone. I use this at work, because all those gaming apps to keep me from annihilating my coworkers, draw down my droid battery.
That is one of the "black hole" items. Things you loan out and will never see again. At Amazon, we had vending machines like this one where you could walk up and tap your badge for a cable or other peripheral. It keeps track of how many you have checked out for the month/year and limits people trying to pilfer from IT.
Otherwise, you are spending $600+/month on cables and adapters that just disappear.
I keep a cable at work to transfer pictures every now and then that I take while in the field. I never need to charge my phone while at work because I don't use it there very often (iPhone 5). If someone that I know well enough needs it I'll lend it out. Otherwise I ignore the situation.
I'm that guy* with the desk drawer containing a stash of every type of USB->Phone cable used within the last 15 years.
We had a T-mobile tech onsite one time to migrate the contacts on the old company-issued phones to the new ones. He forgot his cable for the new ones. They came to me and sure enough, I had one.
*the guy that everyone comes to when they need something, or something done on the down-low. A packrat with questionable morals. Every company has that guy.
@Sapper I'm that guy, only female. I have, at this moment, 4 charging cables in my purse, 3 in the top drawer, and 2 plugged in. (Plus my keychain from the last time Meh sold these.) Additionally, I have 4 backup chargers and 2 iphone chargers (the old school fat one and the newer one.) These are literally the only non-consumable apple products in my possession. Edit: I also have 3 more charging cables in my laptop bag. and 2 in the car. and 1 in my derby bag. There is a slight chance I need an intervention.
@Sapper I keep phone cables pretty much anywhere my phone might hang out long enough to plug in. I also have that drawer at work with every odd adapter/cable that may have existed. I think I even have some 10baseT terminators rolling around in there.
I'm IT in my office (24 employees) and we have 21 Androids, 2 iPhones and 1 old school Nokia. So awesome to watch the iPhone users move from co-worker to co-worker looking for a cable that will work with their phones. I get to have that 'told ya so' moment when they finally realize they should have never gone Apple :)
@tommygilbreath assuming those Iphones are new Enough for a lightning cord, I would have a 30 pin on hand just for spite. (I'm Die hard anti-Apple, but for the sake of convienence for any passengers, i keep a 30 pin and a lighting Cable in my car. as well as the Micro USB for my phone and GPS.)
I work in an office where phones have to stay outside for "security reasons".
@wisenekt Yep, same here. I can't even wear a fitbit at work. This causes some consternation, as part of our health benefits rely on activity trackers, and the old, cleared tracker is no longer for sale.

I left a cable at work, so people can charge their phones.
Oh the joy or working from home: no forgotten cables, and no coworkers to make me feel like I need to lend out my "office cable."
Wut?
Am I the only one left on the planet that doesn't have or want a cell phone?
@Steve7654 yes
@Steve7654 I haven't used one in years. I was required to carry one 24/7 since the early 90's, so not having one now is wonderful. I have a free Obihai VoIP system at home.
@ChunkyBitz didn't we just have this discussion?
@Steve7654 indeed you are

@remo28 Sue her of course!
I leave the house with a full charged phone so I don't need to worry about needing a cable.
@metaphore Seconded.
cables in holiday stockings stopped the cable borrowing nonsense.

@earlyre karma bites when you least expect it,
@Aznatural1 not terribly worried about it. they make the rule quite clear when you're hired, everyone has signed Multiple meeting reports acknowledging that we understand the company cell phone policy, and what the consequences are of getting caught(write ups- up to termination for chronic offenders.) and as for the being an asshole part? @earlyre all I can say is that I'm very glad I'm not in that kind of environment anymore.
@earlyre I wasn't picturing that scenario. I was thinking about people at a desk job. In a customer-facing setting the rule makes perfect sense.
I have a phone that lasts all day on a full charge so I don't need one... :O
I actually have a few spare cables that I keep at work for my coworkers who need them.
@rocketdyke I'm that guy. :-)
I have bought several for work and yes, at church. I started doing this because I would chronically leave my PHONE and CHARGER.
Work from home, where all the cables live.
I'm the guy who has a phone with a 3 day battery life, so I never bring a cable to work, and laugh maniacally when someone asks me for one.
@simplersimon Someday you will get your kumuppins!
I have the large white charging device sold on here a few weeks back, starts with an I, and all those cable ends that fit nothing else except the one that works with my cell phone. I work in IT, no I do not have a spare cable.

I point at the micro-USB cable hanging off my desk and say, "Sorry, I don't have a iPhone."

@MsELizardBeth "Non-consumable" may be incorrect.
@Sapper I keep phone cables pretty much anywhere my phone might hang out long enough to plug in. I also have that drawer at work with every odd adapter/cable that may have existed. I think I even have some 10baseT terminators rolling around in there.
I still have a dumb phone, so my battery lasts at least 3 days at a time. So, nope, never a charger needed at work for me.
He who controls the phone charging cables, controls the world!
Am I the only one that throws away electronic devices when their batteries run out?
I'm that person who left her cables at home. Cause that's where I always am. At home. Where my cables are.
I have Android, coworkers are Apple....
I'm IT in my office (24 employees) and we have 21 Androids, 2 iPhones and 1 old school Nokia. I've got cables and usb chargers everywhere
Walking out to the warehouse to get them another one.
I am the guy who deliberately does not bring a charger (though I do have my Meh charger) and instead uses the charger left behind by my coworker.
