I had cable for years but eventually got fed up with their bullshit. So I switched to satellite, til i had enough of their bullshit too and cancelled that. That was on a Friday; I resolved to look into other options the following week. Going on four years now, still not missing any of it.
Gotta get my husband to watch Barry and Veep, and the second season of Big Little Lies starts next month. Also, His Dark Materials and Watchmen both look interesting.
As HBO said in their ad right before GOT and the Barry season finale, they’re just getting started.
@mvalleeis I read the HDM trilogy. Somewhat enjoyed the first, The Golden Compass (aka Northern Lights) ; thought it was interesting and seemed to be going someplace, but I never felt the characters were that real. I tolerated the second book. I abhorred but endured the third (I hate to not finish a story I’ve started); too much bad pseudo-religion. I don’t have HBO now, and wouldn’t watch the series anyway if I did. For some reason, the books got a lot of nomination for a bunch of rewards. Meh. And meh to the series.

Apparently, they didn’t like the last 2 seasons and want HBO to do a re-do and are canceling their HBO subscriptions because of it. From what I gather, the last two seasons were written by someone else and didn’t follow the same [something] as the original books or something like that.

I agree with the first comment that says something like, “Whatever happened to just not liking something?” I didn’t like the finale of Seinfeld but I didn’t sign a petition for it. Maybe it’s because at my age I pick my battles to only worry about the important things.

They had too many loose ends to wrap up in the last season, and not enough screen time to do them justice. Then, they wasted a lot of the first half of the season on nostalgia and one overly-long battle sequence.
This resulted in a lot of character leaps and jumps instead of progressions. It resulted in characters talking about how Sansa had grown and developed and learned and become wise instead of having her do any single thing that exhibited any positive traits. It resulted in previously intelligent characters doing stupid things and jumping to ridiculous conclusions. Those actions and conclusions themselves didn’t have to be stupid, but the writers never bothered to justify them.
I’m not outraged over it, and I won’t be signing any petitions, but the quality of the show did drop significantly in the last two seasons.
@f00l There are trolls in nearly every forum open to the public. With Slashdot, there are ratings on each post so you can filter out the low rating ones and just read the 5 point ones if you want. That’s what I do anyway.
GRRM is a “gardener” as a writer. He creates characters and situations, finds their depths, and let’s them breathe and evolve almost on their own.
The GOT showrunners (and many tv writers) are “architects” as writers. Plot is everything and it is planned in advance. Characters and emotional development have to be squeezed into plot if they don’t fit naturally.
What I have heard is this: the showrunners faced the pressure of the final two sessions without the help of GRRM’s detailed and organic genius, and under huge time pressure, and huge pressure to deliver big set dramas, battles, and lots of showstopper surprises.
So they (tv people) sacrifice character and motivation and sometimes go for HUGE instead.
Some don’t. The runners of Sopranos, BTVS, Breaking Bad, etc, seem to have avoided this.
Unlikely that HBO will agreed to re-do anything.
But I kinda wish they would, without having seen what they delivered. Since they could make lots of $ on it all, and it would be fun.

But in the old days, if I recall, at /., the trolling was a far lesser % of the total post count. I’m thinking about 20-25 years ago, if I recall my previous daily /. addiction correctly.
I got free HBO from AT&T. Switched to T-Mobile a year ago, still getting free HBO. Almost makes all the bullshit AT&T charges and rotten customer service worth it. (I don’t know that T-Mobile’s any better but they have T-Mobile Tuesdays and haven’t screwed me like AT&T has.)

I was getting rerady to cancel it and found my daughter watching Inception. As soon as she’s done HBO is history, at least until something good comes on. I did get my fifteen bucks worth this month though.
Not quite yet. The Deadwood movie will be streaming next Friday (31st). After that, I will probably drop it until something else comes along I want to watch. One great thing about streaming vs. cable is that it’s easy to drop services and pick them back up again seamlessly and with no fuss.
I’m always surprised by the content I want to see that’s on it. A lot of the time it’s back catalogue stuff I’d normally need to buy through iTunes or have Netflix send me on disc. I look up an obscure older movie from my formative years and whaddya know, it’s on HBO.
For me it’s Watchmen and a Silicon Valley now that GoT is done. There is always something to watch, the problem for me is finding the time to watch it. I might go back and check out Westworld now to fill out the time until the fall.

Have only seen portions of the first HBO season, but read the books as they arrived.
Hope GRRM lives to finish it all.
Re TV series, it’s impossible to avoid leaks. And so I know quite a bit of the “later on”, including last night.
I kinda figured that as a strong possibility, even since I dunno. Sometimes in book 2?
If those petitioners can actually get HBO to re-do the final season, that would be fun. More to argue about.
I’ll finish watching it someday. I own digital versions.
