I bought the handheld several months ago. It worked so well I bought this upright last time it was on Meh. I have cats and this thing is great. Not only does it get the cat hair, it collects the fine litter dust my guys track through the house. Its powerful and the attachments are easily swapped.
@SoftAsFur Get a car battery, a 12V to 120V 500W AC converter, strap them to your back, and go for it!
Of course, if you want something lightweight you’ll also get something with much lower power. At lower power levels the cyclone action simply doesn’t take place at all for household dirt and dust size particles, this is already pushing it at 500W. But the battery pack required to run a 500W motor for 20 minutes is no small, cheap thing.
Plus it’ll eventually go bad and cost almost as much as the entire device did to replace or repair it.
So while I don’t doubt that you want cordless, I doubt that you want all the negatives that come with it.
Hats off to the marketing genius that combined the massive power of rockets with the brutal cunning of sharks.
Unfortunately their inspiration came while they were employed by a mid-tier household goods company, rather than, say, a company that creates excavators, supercars, or actual rockets, but at least the world gets a shark rocket of some kind…
@mamawoot@benj Both models only include only one mini motorized brush. The main difference is that this model doesn’t include the “flexible extension wand”, and instead of the the “duster crevice tool” it includes both a 12" Crevice tool and dusting brush
@luvche21 If you have pet hair, yes. We have two Great Pyrenees and that will fill the hopper quickly. But they shed enough at times to generate about a garbage bag of fur per week.
For normal dirt and debris, the bin is probably just fine – about 1/2-2/3 of my upright Hoover’s bin which was never close to being full. Of course that depends on how much stuff there is – but even accounting for the fact that the dogs are determined to wear all the leaves and bring them into the house, I have done tests with dust-mopping & sweeping to get the hair up then vacuuming (not a lot of carpets) and I didn’t need to change the bin.
@luvche21 yes but it is easy, not messy and fast. If it isn’t dirty in there and you don’t have animals then maybe no. I have cats. When I lived in 2 rooms I had to empty a similar one once - but I have 4 cats, one of whom is long haired and one seems to shed year round.
@CANNONFODDER and @Kidsandliz - does it do a good job replacing a normal upright/bagless vacuum that I’ve had for several years? We’re looking to replace it anyway, and would love to get a nice one like this if it would replace a normal vacuum (which it seems like it would). Thanks!
@luvche21 It sucks up a fair bit of stuff - better than a cheap Bissell, the main drawback is the small canister to hold the junk. Also these are top heavy and so you’d need to lean it against something or it would fall over (I have one without the removable hand vac)
@carl669 See you bought one, but for others, <not this exact model> – We don’t have a lot of carpets, but some plush rugs, and the brush does a good job at getting it the hair up, but the rotating bar is small and since Great Pyrenees hair is long and (filamentous?) enough to be spun, that became a routine post-shutdown maintenance task.
For the rest of the floors, it’s generally a two stage process (sweep or dry-mop) to consolidate most of the fluffy little floor clouds and the big stuff, then come back through to get after the finer dirt and debris in the corners and such that the broom left.
Also, great to get corners and the tops of the baseboards with the crevice tool.
horrible vacuum…Can’t take it locally to fix once it breaks (avg 2 year life) and must be sent back to Shark. Taking it to a vacuum store voids your warranty, SHARK offers no parts support to ESSCO or Steel city, the two biggest parts suppliers for the industry, Suction (CFM) is horrible. Cleaning the filter constantly becomes a pain. Save your money, but a Miele upright, a Simplicity s10d with a metal roller or even a Dyson…
@fastharry Curious how many local repair shops there are now days. I think that policy of sending in small electronics now refers to almost anything. If you have a warranty on your Apple iPhone, can you bring it to iFixit and still keep your warranty? How about a Samsung TV? I don’t know but it seems logical that you would have to send any defective device back to the manufacturer after the retailer’s return policy period. Or at the bare minimum, have a certified repair person for that specific company fix it.
For durable goods like a refrigerator, dish washer, and clothes dryer, people usually can come to your house but they still need to be sent to you from the manufacturer’s list of authorized repair people.
@cengland0 There are always local vac shops in every big city…I run one in Louisville. I have so many frustrated people coming in with broken sharks and i can’t help them. I don’t sell Eureka…but I can still access parts and help my customers. When you have to pay to ship a shark back (unless you join their VIP club) just to put a belt on it is is ridiculous. Not to mention the plastic quality is horrible, it leaks dust (though to be fair, all bagless, including the Dyson, are dust bowls. Shark has a 2 week turnaround…very inconvenient for a household. Just head to consumer affairs sites and read the horror stories.
@fastharry Does that mean you will fix any brand vacuum under warranty except Shark?
I have a good friend that owns a small engine repair center. They fix things like generators, lawn mowers, trimers, and edgers. If you want warranty repair though, it has to be ones of the brands that they have a deal with the manufacturer. If they fix it and the manufacturer doesn’t know who they are, they don’t get paid for that repair. They must have an account setup with each manufacturer and they get pre-authorizations before every warranty repair. Out of warranty repairs don’t matter since the customer is paying and many common parts are standard in that industry.
They cannot offer warranty repairs for every brand because many of them require that you sell that brand to be an authorized repair for them and most of them require minimum annual purchases. They cannot possibly spend $50,000 for every brand each year in the small store they own. They don’t have the space or the money to buy that much inventory. So they pick and choose which ones they deal with.
@cengland0 That is true with me as well…I only repair Miele, Hoover, Eureka, Simplicity and Dyson under warranty. But not every issue is warranty. In fact, 7 out of 10 issues are not warranty. Housekeepers and kids break parts, Vacs get dropped down stairs. People vac under the bed, grab a lego and break the belt or strip a gear. Clogs are a big issue as well. I can take a kirby and replace the fan if they pick up something like a penny. I can get the part. Can’t fix ANYTHING on a shark as I can’t get parts…and I won’t fix a non part issue as I will have a problem if I break something snapping it apart.
@fastharry What’s your sample set for that average lifespan?
I own 3 Sharks - including a 2 year old version of this vac. The oldest is well over 10 years old. I can’t kill these things (and I have pets, and “Florida filth” - the grime that comes from living on a sand bar).
If emptying the bin is such a PITA maybe you just need a maid. (and the filters only need occasional maintenance if you empty the bin when it needs emptying).
@fastharry you’re confirming our experience with Shark repairablity.
We have several local vacuum repair shops who claim they’ll repair just about any mainstream vac.
They all laugh when you mention Shark - not so much that it is a bad vacuum.
Rather that Shark’s business model is a closed system. The only way to get non-accessory/repair parts is via eBay, harvested off retired vacuums.
Shark does not sell repair parts.
We inherited a Shark upright and it is OK, but when I needed parts to repair it, it sat in the basement until I harvested an identical model from some poor sucker’s curb - presumably when they ran into the same issue.
We are seriously considering getting a “real” vacuum next time… and spending $550-700 on a Meile. (The entry level Meile currently being sold by Costco is a too-compromised entry-level model.). Also watching estate sales…
@Pufferfishy top quality bag vacuums tend to be cleaner for the air (yes, seems counterintuitive, assuming you use the manufacturer’s hepa bags and filters) and their bags pack in a lot more stuff between emptying. Depending on model and your pet-scenario, once a month or longer emptying vs multiple per session.
@RedOak I’ve yet to see the vacuum - bag or bagless - in which you can leave pet hair and dander for an extended time and not have it smell like a heard of wet goats when you power it on after sitting. Pets are naturally “yeasty” - that never goes well.
I have to say I’m getting a kick out of all the people bitching about the inability to get a $100 vacuum repaired at a shop - when generally they’re going to bang you $50 just to walk in the door. But whatevs.
@Pufferfishy The pet hair stench sounds valid. Our cockapoo sheds far less (virtually not at all!) than we do so can’t speak to that.
Having some folks with allergies in our home, we strive to reduce dust. That would be one of the drivers toward a high quality bag-vac.
It appears you have a lot more spare money than do we. Not gonna throw out a $100 or even a free vacuum for the lack of a $5-20 part. Not eveyone is at the mercy of others to fix their stuff.
And that $50 floor has not been our experience when we found the vacuum repair shop could get the part and install it for not much more than we’d pay for the part. The vacuum repair shops around here are downright understanding of frugal.
@Pufferfishy yikes, so sensitive. Cheap vacuums might be a false economy. And far less effective at vacuuming.
And if your family’s health is negatively impacted by bagless vacs yes, a true, tested and proven HEPA vac might be the only choice. +$500 over a dust maker would be trivial in that case. If we can find one at an estate sale, we’ll go that route.
If your doctor recemmended a CPAP you’d ignore them?
Walk a few inches in another person’s shoes. And relax. Not worth stressing about.
@Pufferfishy you could buy a Miele s7 upright, add a charcoal filter and not smell anything due to the fact that Miele’s are hand assembled, rubber gasketed and buyilt for 20 years worth of service…for 399. And I can guarantee, with 145 CFM and it’s ceramic bladed motor it would eat that shark alive in any cleaning and/or dust test…
I bought the Pet version last go round. It is shameful how many times I had to empty it. Dog sheds more than I realize, since he kind of matches the carpet. So, should I complain about that? Should probably vacuum more. Hehe. I would rather have to empty it often, knowing the beast sucks like a Monster. I would buy it again. Under furniture, nice long cord. Lightweight. Just wish there was a handle of sorts on the wand somewhere. Would make it almost perfect.
@Mandamm I have the same feeling when I use my Neato. The floors don’t look dirty but I run it just to keep the battery charging properly. (It goes into a standby mode if you don’t use it and it takes around 8 hours to wake it back up.)
It fills up the bin with dust from someplace. Don’t know where but I then run it again and it fills it up again. Must be places I don’t see like under the bed or something. Guess I’ll never know.

I bought the TruePet version when they sold it the other week. I personally love it. I have three dogs and four cats and completely admit to not vacuuming as much as I should. This vacuum is perfect for lazy people like me. It’s light and convenient for doing one or two rooms when I have a few extra minutes. I rarely, if ever, bothered to lug out my large vacuum on a weeknight, but I’ve already done that a few times with this thing. It also seems to work better than my old Kenmore at getting the dust and dog hair out of the carpet. So, I’m definitely happy with the purchase!
I freaking love this vacuum. I never vacuumed my apartment, ever, since I’ve moved in almost (dare I say it) 2 years ago.
When I vacuumed my carpet stairs they changed colors. It was incredible. I love all the attachments this vacuum came with as well. The light is also a night addition so I can see all the gross stuff I’m picking up. Great purchase. Thanks, Meh.
