RunCam HD (Mobius clone) ordered tonight
0I looked at 808, Mobius and RunCam. I finally decided on RunCam because I tripped into a deal on eBay. $25 plus $3 shipping from USA seller. I should have it by Saturday.
It's got a 120* FOV, and does 1080p/30, 720p/60/30. Weight is 41g, and battery life is around 2 hours, but it includes a power/FPV cable as well.
FPV latency is comparable to Mobius (maybe just a bit faster when recording).
So the plan is to strap this onto the Runner 250 so if I ever grow a pair and actually go fast, it'll make some interesting video. Also, the RunCam is much more convenient and comfortable as a head cam than the GoPro.
On Thursday I ordered a little SQ8 camera, but I'll be cancelling that order and sticking with the RunCam for now.

Runcam HD on the EMAX 250. Dang, this guy makes it look easy.
@ruouttaurmind dat tilt tho
@sportykev I'm guessing he's running at a billion MPH to get enough tilt on that camera, huh? I downloaded that mount on Thingiverse, gonna 3D print it and give it a shot. But who am I kidding? At the speed I'll be flying, a perfectly flat mount would be just fine.
@ruouttaurmind oh c'mon. I'd say... at least 20 degrees!
@sportykev Only if you want to clearly see the last few seconds before impact!
Great price--I found bid prices that low, but no 'buy it now's.
@fultonmartin Ya, I was searching eBay last night and saw one ending within a few minutes, so I watched it and sniped a bid at the last second. Checking "sold" items in the last few weeks and it's not too difficult to get them for around that price, though I think $25 is about the lowest I saw. I think I got that price because it was silver and most folks seem to want the orange ones. Same camera, so I didn't really care about the color.
@ruouttaurmind looks like that seller started doing fixed price listings now. The chaired price on ebay is over $50 currently. Good find!
@djslack Here's one that ends Thursday at 03:07PDT. That's, what, maybe 5AM your time? If you're an early riser, current bid is $26 and prolly not much bid sniping competition that time of the morning.
Same seller I bought from. They shipped promptly and provided a tracking number.
Wow! I just received a shipping update on my RunCam. It's been delivered already!
@ruouttaurmind i found the right seller but somehow missed that listing. Thanks for the tip!
I received my RunCam HD in Wednesday afternoon's mail. The eBay seller shipped promptly, but profs to the USPS too! Two days for a first class parcel from Maryland to Arizona. Heck, I often don't get two day service on Priority Mail stuff.
I've only unpacked it so far, but my initial impression is positive. Quality seems decent. Not GoPro decent, but "better than your average Chinese crap" kind of decent. The packaging and kit is exceptional. The box is very sturdy. The kit includes the camera with lens cap, a mounting bracket, a FPV/charge cable, a composite A/V output cable (for playback connection to a TV), min-USB charge/data cable, micro-fiber lens cleaning cloth and a very thorough user's guide (written in English, not Chinenglish).
I've got it charging now. I'll try to do a comparison video with the RunCam, GoPro Hero 3+ Black, iLook+ and Vivitar DVR-787 sometime this weekend. They all do at least 1080p/30 so it should be an interesting comparison.
@ruouttaurmind Look forward to your comparison. I slept through the one you posted but see they list one a day or so for that price so keeping an eye on them (and also starting at $31 with free shipping which is close enough to the same thing).
This form factor looks like it would suit the 250s more than the ilook camera, especially since both 250s will have a vtx onboard already. And sleeker than my current configuration of bolting a Midland action cam to the top deck. Plus who doesn't need more compact HD action cameras, right?
@djslack "Plus, who doesn't need more compact HD action cameras..." I was thinking the same thing when I was sniping my last second bid for the RunCam. After all, the three I already had, plus the two FPV camera/transmitters I already have couldn't possibly be enough... could they?
@ruouttaurmind I'm also looking fwd to that comparison. Can you throw in your keychain 808 cam (If you have one)?
@garyhgaryh I never wound up with a 808. The price of a 808 (#16? #18? whichever does 1080p/30) was about the same as the RunCam, so I went with RunCam. As @djslack points out, the RunCam/Mobius form factor is ideal for mounting to the 250's.
If you want to send me one of yours, I'll be happy to throw it in the mix.
This is my simple test rig. iLook+, GoPro H3+Black Vivitar DVR-787, RunCam HD:
Plenty of room to add Gary's 808.
I figure I'll head out around dusk and get some samples between dusk and dark. Then in the morning get some bright sunlight video, trying to duck in and out of shadows to see how each camera reacts to the changing light.
If I get really brave, maybe I'll strap the rig to the landing gear of the Tali and see if it's got enough umph to get in the air. If any of the fleet can do it, it's Tali.
