@caffeine_dude I have retropie running on a pi zero and no problems on old games. N64, no, but nes, snes, sega, etc are all very usable. Haven’t played many MAME roms to speak on them.
@djslack I have mine running on a Pi3 and N64 is hit or miss, depending on a few factors. People that overclock and add cooling to the Pi generally see consistently good performance for N64 games.
I’m always looking for deals on more, wish I hadn’t missed this one!
@medz That one went out of stock, although the other colors are available for $1 more. I’m not convinced of the need for a fan, though.
This kit has a case, heatsinks, power supply, switched cord, 16gb micro SD, and HDMI cable for $20. That’s pretty much a one stop shop. They also have an experimenter bundle with breakout boards and stuff for a little more.
@medz I can’t believe I misspoke si blatantly and didn’t correct myself. Don’t know where that came from.
I got it from a guy who installed Retropie on there and he added the ROMs. He did all the work on that end because I’m getting old and am becoming less patient st set things like that up.
@BillLehecka are you having problems with video lag after playing for a while? I would think active cooling would be preferable to passive for this application
@capguncowboy Active cooling would be needed if I wanted to play more intensive games like a PlayStation game (which I have access to). But playing the older games? The case itself is like a giant heatsink. I’ve seen it tested, and it cooled the processor 20 degrees Celsius when running at full bore.
But to answer your question: I haven’t noticed any lag yet.
@medz Well, if you run Retropie in conjunction with EmulationStation, you can Scrape the Games DB list. Just look up a game and it will automatically put in the box art, description, etc for the ROM you have.
But like I said, I don’t have the patience, so I found a guy to do the leg work for me.
@BillLehecka Well, EmulationStation appears to be part of the RetroPie image I downloaded and put on the SD card. I’ll have to Bing Search this “scrape the games db list” you mention.
I missed this when it was being sold. Was it during the mehthon thing? How much was it selling for?
I’ve got an RPi3 running my home weather station software and a Zero W still in the box. I’ve also got an OrangePi One and an OrangePi Zero, the just running seti@home stuff and the latter running Mosquitto and NodeRed.
The OrangePis are cheaper and a lot of fun, but they aren’t for people who want things to “just work”.

@lljk It worked! Your order number is: wretched-mimicking-cake

Would buy but I have a w and a 3b still in box that I’m not using right now. Gonna make a full sized picade cabinet.
@ConradHilton Test it before you do this. I tried retro pi and the lag was too high.

@mediocrebot TIL this works
No “do you want another”? Is there a limit? What if I try a second order?
@blaineg And sold out at 100.
/giphy thankless-uplifted-fly
Damn the one item i really needed and sold out fast…
@bruinscbr if u in sf bay area u can pick up from me :p
@tinkleondabeach opposite side of the country in new Hampshire. I’ll just pay extra on Amazon soon
I think Frys electronics has them for 30 bucks.
Nooooo I missed this
Grabbed one. Now I think I want to make a retro video game console…
@BillLehecka Me too. Already have some kit parts in my amazon cart.
That was a really good price. I’m glad I wasn’t around or I would have bought some. And I already have too many.
/giphy too many toys
I wonder if I can get a good image for this…
So I see folks are selling heat-sinks for these. $5 on Amazon. Is it necessary if I’ll be playing retro games on it?
@medz not a bad idea. I bought a case and two heatsinks as a set for $7 on Amazon. Let me rustle you up a link.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CDVSBPO/, available in clear, black, and white with heatsinks included. They’re backed with 3M adhesive and stick on the chips.
I don’t think you’ll hurt anything without heatsinks but if you experience freezes or crashes I’d add them.
@djslack this one has a fan and power cord included for $17
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LWURJMI
@medz Nice. That’s a good deal. The fan can’t hurt, but that power switch is also a good idea. Beats unplugging the thing.

@djslack thanks, I’m all set. I think. We’ll see when everything arrives.
So I made a retro game console out of my Raspberry Pi, and I live-streamed it.
@BillLehecka it’s an HDMI port not an html port.
Where did you get your roms? Mine works ok. Played a game of mutant league football already.
Edit, well it works ok now that I’m using a legit sd card. The Samsung I bought on Amazon was fake.

@BillLehecka I don’t have thumbnails for my games or consoles either… I need a ROM guy…

And here’s the info on the built in scraper:

@craigthom
Yes.
25.
@mflassy Shoot. I’d have bought a couple, even though I’ve got nothing to do with them right now.
