@joelmw The problem I have with apple products is their proprietary hardware and software. For example, why use a lightning cable when every other phone on the market can use a micro USB cable just fine.
Why do you have to sync using iTunes? With my Android, I can plug it into any computer and it shows up as a drive and I can move files back and forth. I can also plug in a OTG memory stick and transfer files that way. I can even insert a microSD card which has never been an option with an iPhone and never will because Apple screws their customer by charging a premium for more memory which should be extremely cheap to add.
With all that said, I am typing this on my Mac and I do own an iPhone 4 as a backup. I do know how to use them so it’s not just a random person that has never owned one stating opinions on something they have never tried.
There are more applications available for Android than iOS. When an app is available on both, it’s usually free or cheaper for the Android devices. Apple takes too much control on what is released in the app store such as removing the shaking baby app and the program someone wrote to use the pressure sensor to detect the weight of objects.
Colleagues of mine write apps for both platforms and tell me they can get the Android updates out instantly whereas it takes a long time to get an update out on the Apple App Store which means their clients have to wait much longer for enhancements or bug fixes.
I use my mac for video editing but use the PC for DVD editing because that’s the platform the software was written. Newsgroup reader programs are better on PCs too.

I’m more concerned with words and images these days anyway–and less with the technical grit.
Even at work, where I’m a technology professional, I’d be quite content delegating many of the hardcore technical aspects; and that’s what I tell all of my new hires, “You want this? You’re more than welcome.” The politics and project management are just as engaging and arguably more important. And I prefer a working, workable platform that’s stable, has some continuity and is easier for all of us to use (and I’m not at all saying that that’s not Android, but in fact for my specialty, Apple has been supported longer and better for mobile solutions–and, alas, it’s Windows on the desktop and mostly on the server side too). I’ll always have–and want–to have some understanding of the technical details, but I just want to get the job done . . . okay, and have a few fun toys.

We should probably embrace and rejoice that there is competition in the cell phone market. If there was no Android OS, then the new iphones would still have the hardware specs of the iphone 3 but cost what they do now. If there was no Apple, then Alphabet would be writing another phone/tablet OS to compete against itself and you would have to teach your parents how to use the opposite one every time they bought a new phone.
I think it’s fair to hate on Apple but we should love that they exist.

Later I used a phone with a slide out keyboard but now with the full screen touch screens, I have to use a non-tactile feeling screen instead and nobody seems to make a good phone with a keyboard now.
Apple was the first to introduce the full screen touch, swipe, and pinch interface which is sort of nice but not the only company with those features today.
If I want an iOS device, I don’t have many choices. Either iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 plus. Might have a couple color and memory size options but that’s it. If you want an Android device, you can pick solutions from so many different companies. @norman8 depends on what that is. In my case, since I use an Apple TV to play stuff on my TV I don’t need the Vizio remote 99% of the time. Having this setup as a remote for that 1% I do need the Vizio remote (for say, changing inputs to something else like a laptop that’s connected) is perfect and way more convenient than looking for the remote I never use.

@cengland0 yeah, we have a speak-to-search remote now and it’s handy for that. i do actually know the channel numbers for most of what we watch but my partner doesn’t, and it’s also nice for things like sports where the carriers vary. saying “watch bruins” is so much easier than searching frantically through tons of channels when the game’s on, haha.

Kind of neat, but my primary phone is android, already has a universal remote built in, and I only use it like once a year to adjust something that’s not mine, like the volume on a tv in a restaurant.
However, this seems like it would have its uses, including controlling devices hidden inside a cabinet for less than an IR repeater setup.

I’ve been using the Pronto/Peel for the last year to control my home theatre (2015 Vizio M70-C3, Onkyo 645 receiver, Sony Blu-ray/DVD player, Apple TV4) using the iOS app and absolutely love it. I went through a number of dedicated remotes, including Logitech (which I still use as part of my remote arsenal), but I find I most often use the Peel for start-up, shut-down, and OTA channel surfing. I can be watching something on the ATV, ask Siri to launch Peel on the iPhone, press a “Now Playing” TV show icon without even knowing the station, and the system just makes the input switch and goes there. I like the Peel presentation of OTA content with various category options. I don’t have cable so can’t vouch for the presentation of cable listings. Though some may feel they are rather plain, I prefer the very clear, non-ornamented remote screens. I liked the simplicity of setting up my various remote screens & automated sequences “just the way I want them.” I’ve been going through batteries around 10-12 weeks using alkalines. No remote is perfect, but the Peel has hit a sweet spot for me that I keep going back to. At $15, it’s an outstanding value even if you just want to play around with it as a system option.
It says “mostly for Apple” s maybe it will work with my android tablets. I’ll wait around and see what others say. I’ve been dreaming about something like this.

Got a Galaxy S6 which has its own IR blaster…and the Peel app. Works OK, but I do have a device it doesn’t work with…a Pioneer home theater. But in my other room, I’ve got the Onkyo TX-545n (guess where I bought that?) for which I’ve got an app. So…don’t think so.
@eeterrific Same here. Only thing I need the Pioneer remote for is to switch sources and the HMG (internet radio). Everything else, the Tivo remote handles, and VLC Remote app on the phone to control VLC on the computer. It’s a little better than running it through the Plex app on the Tivo - volume control and back skip for starters.
@pronetowobble i actually got excited when i saw the photo and read “peel smart.” I peeled and cored a bunch of apples just last weekend as i have been slowly upping my game on cooking in the last year. I was hoping this would make that easier for next time (i also added a pastry blender to my Mom’s day gift wishlist because using a fork is a lot of effort). Dunno @skemmehs - Maybe you need to get out to restaurants more? That weird black thing is called a Check Holder or Check Presenter. In many other countries (super common in Canada) and with growing use in the United States you’ll find restaurants using portable credit card readers. Your server brings it to the table where they process your payment without disappearing with your credit card (a very common cause of credit card fraud).

Surprised nobody else has said it yet (maybe I’m the only one?), but I find remote apps to not work well for me due to the total lack of tactile feedback. I have to stare at my phone screen to see which buttons I’m tapping. It’s the same reason why you can’t fully replace a good game controller or physical keyboard with a touch screen. I simply prefer to know which buttons I’m pressing, and if I’m pressing them properly. That, and constantly Glancing down at my phone and then back up at the TV to see if the button worked is annoying.

I have the Logitech Harmony Hub (Smart Control?) (two, actually) and they’re pretty good, both from a physical remote standpoint and app alternative.
Since Xfinity launched Netflix on X1, I don’t really do a lot of device toggling, but when I do it’s nice that I don’t have to go remote hunting and it seems to just work. I think I grabbed on of mine on Woot for about $60, but you can find retinkered versions for about $10 more on the regular.
@ACraigL I also have the Harmony Hub and LOVE it, but there is a significant difference in price, I paid over $100 for a refurb Harmony Hub bundled with a keyboard I never use. If you can find one for $60-70 now buy it.

i have an iphone se. (partner has an android.) we have an xbone. the xbox phone app functions both as a regular tv remote & a game controller ‘remote’. i don’t use it all the time but it’s great for when you’re super comfy and settled in and you realize you left the remote somewhere out of reach. (or you’re too hungover to move. or the regular remote ran out of batteries.) no phone pointing required. xbone also comes with cortana for voice commands, although the flippin’ kinect only works like 30% of the time and when it does the response time is too slow to be useful imo. (before cortana just saying ‘xbox’ worked much better overall. yup, still sad about that change.) we also have one of those press a button & speak into it type tv remotes, which at first i thought was stupid (i mean, you’re already holding the remote!) but not having to search through hundreds of channels to figure out which one is airing the game tonight, or not having to click through seven menus to watch a program ondemand is a nice improvement.
Haven’t tried Peel in about 5 years. Are they still pushing the “social media” angle, or did they quit that bullshit and just make a decent remote app? (Just curious, really. Not much need either way at my house, where the TV is mostly locked on Disney Jr.)

Some full-service chain restaurants are going to mobile touch-screen terminals at the table. They let you handle the payment yourself, tip and all, and they can print a receipt if you want one. And they often interact with the rewards program for discounts, coupons, etc.
And they also usually let you pay $1-2 for unlimited simple games during your meal. In case you don’t actually have one of these “smartphone” devices to play them for free.
And they take up more space on a table that is already crowded.

I’ve been using the Pronto/Peel for the last year to control my home theatre (2015 Vizio M70-C3, Onkyo 645 receiver, Sony Blu-ray/DVD player, Apple TV4) using the iOS app and absolutely love it. I went through a number of dedicated remotes, including Logitech (which I still use as part of my remote arsenal), but I find I most often use the Peel for start-up, shut-down, and OTA channel surfing. I can be watching something on the ATV, ask Siri to launch Peel on the iPhone, press a “Now Playing” TV show icon without even knowing the station, and the system just makes the input switch and goes there. I like the Peel presentation of OTA content with various category options. I don’t have cable so can’t vouch for the presentation of cable listings. Though some may feel they are rather plain, I prefer the very clear, non-ornamented remote screens. I liked the simplicity of setting up my various remote screens & automated sequences “just the way I want them.” I’ve been going through batteries around 10-12 weeks using alkalines. No remote is perfect, but the Peel has hit a sweet spot for me that I keep going back to. At $15, it’s an outstanding value even if you just want to play around with it as a system option.
It says “mostly for Apple” s maybe it will work with my android tablets. I’ll wait around and see what others say. I’ve been dreaming about something like this.

@wew They always had to wherever they had a distribution center. They probably figured it wasn’t worth fighting anymore once they had buildings (nexus) and employees in almost every state.
Also, states really want you to collect taxes if you show up with your hand out for corporate welfare TIF money to locate there.

@wew Amazon really hasn’t been all that resistant to collecting sales taxes where they exist even if they didn’t do so from the start.
But Amazon’s distribution strategy seems to be leaking so local (Now, etc…) anyway it won’t be long before the vast majority of their customer-density is in locations where they have a physical presence.
And the way internet sales are blowing out brick and mortar, it won’t be long before all Internet sales will be forced to tax anyway.

Got a Galaxy S6 which has its own IR blaster…and the Peel app. Works OK, but I do have a device it doesn’t work with…a Pioneer home theater. But in my other room, I’ve got the Onkyo TX-545n (guess where I bought that?) for which I’ve got an app. So…don’t think so.
@eeterrific Same here. Only thing I need the Pioneer remote for is to switch sources and the HMG (internet radio). Everything else, the Tivo remote handles, and VLC Remote app on the phone to control VLC on the computer. It’s a little better than running it through the Plex app on the Tivo - volume control and back skip for starters.
No apple, so I’m out on this one, Meh.

@pronetowobble i actually got excited when i saw the photo and read “peel smart.” I peeled and cored a bunch of apples just last weekend as i have been slowly upping my game on cooking in the last year. I was hoping this would make that easier for next time (i also added a pastry blender to my Mom’s day gift wishlist because using a fork is a lot of effort). But then my smile turned upsidedown as the next two words were read.
Dunno @skemmehs - Maybe you need to get out to restaurants more? That weird black thing is called a Check Holder or Check Presenter. In many other countries (super common in Canada) and with growing use in the United States you’ll find restaurants using portable credit card readers. Your server brings it to the table where they process your payment without disappearing with your credit card (a very common cause of credit card fraud).
@cinoclav there’s a couple of restaurants that I go to that have a little tablet that’s on the table. I love those because I don’t even have to wait for the server to come by with a check.
@RiotDemon Yeah, last time I was at a Chili’s they had the tablets. They’re convenient but also the epitome of ‘eat and get the fuck out.’

I have one of these I am an Android S7 Active user and the rest of the family has IOS 6 and 7+. It worked on my S7 Active, then uplodaed it on an Iphone 6 and it controlled the TV, Direct TV Box, The DVD and the surround sound. My kids have IPhone 7+ and it worked for them as well. Thinking about buying another one for the upstairs.

Because this is Bluetooth you can control your devices from the other room and other times when you don’t have line of sight. That’s the advantage here, and something you can’t do with other remotes or Android devices that include a kitchen sink and IR output.
Surprised nobody else has said it yet (maybe I’m the only one?), but I find remote apps to not work well for me due to the total lack of tactile feedback. I have to stare at my phone screen to see which buttons I’m tapping. It’s the same reason why you can’t fully replace a good game controller or physical keyboard with a touch screen. I simply prefer to know which buttons I’m pressing, and if I’m pressing them properly. That, and constantly Glancing down at my phone and then back up at the TV to see if the button worked is annoying.

I have the Logitech Harmony Hub (Smart Control?) (two, actually) and they’re pretty good, both from a physical remote standpoint and app alternative.
Since Xfinity launched Netflix on X1, I don’t really do a lot of device toggling, but when I do it’s nice that I don’t have to go remote hunting and it seems to just work. I think I grabbed on of mine on Woot for about $60, but you can find retinkered versions for about $10 more on the regular.
@ACraigL I also have the Harmony Hub and LOVE it, but there is a significant difference in price, I paid over $100 for a refurb Harmony Hub bundled with a keyboard I never use. If you can find one for $60-70 now buy it.

meh. serves no purpose for me. already have several ‘free’ options for remote-free tv shiz.
i have an iphone se. (partner has an android.) we have an xbone. the xbox phone app functions both as a regular tv remote & a game controller ‘remote’. i don’t use it all the time but it’s great for when you’re super comfy and settled in and you realize you left the remote somewhere out of reach. (or you’re too hungover to move. or the regular remote ran out of batteries.) no phone pointing required. xbone also comes with cortana for voice commands, although the flippin’ kinect only works like 30% of the time and when it does the response time is too slow to be useful imo. (before cortana just saying ‘xbox’ worked much better overall. yup, still sad about that change.) we also have one of those press a button & speak into it type tv remotes, which at first i thought was stupid (i mean, you’re already holding the remote!) but not having to search through hundreds of channels to figure out which one is airing the game tonight, or not having to click through seven menus to watch a program ondemand is a nice improvement.
Haven’t tried Peel in about 5 years. Are they still pushing the “social media” angle, or did they quit that bullshit and just make a decent remote app? (Just curious, really. Not much need either way at my house, where the TV is mostly locked on Disney Jr.)

Some full-service chain restaurants are going to mobile touch-screen terminals at the table. They let you handle the payment yourself, tip and all, and they can print a receipt if you want one. And they often interact with the rewards program for discounts, coupons, etc.
And they also usually let you pay $1-2 for unlimited simple games during your meal. In case you don’t actually have one of these “smartphone” devices to play them for free.
And they take up more space on a table that is already crowded.
@MWPollard next time you are there ask the server to see the security and privacy policy in regards to the mic and camera at every table.
