Been trying to get a recipe for IF(TTT) going which doesn’t involve Twitter. @PlacidPenguin has a recipe, but I’m trying to make a better one.

Unfortunately the RSS page which Meh has hasn’t been playing nicely with me. So, I’ve been working on alternatives. Since I can only test it out at midnight, I won’t know for another 23 hours and 45 minutes or so if what I just set up works.
It involves me creating a new RSS page through a site which I’ve used before for other recipes.

Hopefully it works.

While the Twitter one is good, sometimes I want to see what the item looks like. This should allow me to do that (with a little tinkering possibly).

So… It didn’t work, which means I have 23 hours and 25 minutes or so to work on the next attempts.

I suppose I could create a throwaway Twitter account and just solve the issue that way, but that wouldn’t be much fun.

It also would help if the product image had a side static URL (in that there would be the unique URL (which we have now) so that the URL would show the correct product regardless of the date, and also a URL which would only show the item for that day and the URL would never change).

@ilovehollboll I played with this for a while tonight using several different feed generators and finally settled on the following as kinda sorta working. (Life would be so much easier if IFTTT just had a way to frakking parse web pages.)

Anyways, I found this site and used it to create this feed which has the item name, price, buy link and first four pix.

Unfortunately, meh rolled over before I had the ifttt recipe set up so not sure that it will work with it.

The annoying thing about trying to set up a recipe for the Meh rollover is that it can’t be tested until the rollover, thus leaving a whole day to work on it and ponder if it will work.

Good news: The recipe I was testing worked.

Bad News: I didn’t have an image set up, so I dunno if that works.

More bad news: I got the notification 25 minutes after the deal went up.

Bright side: At least I don’t need to set up a throwaway Twitter account.

Of course, if I wanna know what the deal is, I’d be looking at Meh at midnight anyways, so I dunno why I’m putting in much effort to get a working IF recipe.

I have not changed the feed I created since I mentioned it here, though IFttt seems to use the last image (the “goofy one”) rather than the first image, so I’ll probably tweak that if/when I circle back to this.

IFTTT is not going to be useful for instantaneous action and expecting it to assist with getting a Fuko is ridiculous. I believe it polls most things about once an hour. (Eons ago, when I was chasing reputation on deals.woot, I had a recipe that texted me whenever OhCheri posted a new deal because an early upvote on one of her deals was most of what was needed to keep my rep in the top 20 or so. Frequently, the texts came almost an hour after she posted a deal. Sometimes it was almost instant.)

The text I got from IFTTT for the Shark Mop deal came in at 12:06 AM:

New meh item Shark Lift-Away Steam Mop with Removable Handheld Steamer (Refurbished) $45 http://ift.tt/2kgYk4z http://ift.tt/2kqzORS

The “New meh item” test came from my IFTTT recipe as text. The rest of it came from {{variables}}.

I agree with the philosophy of “because you can” when it comes to tech (and to a lesser extent: everything else (mostly because “everything else” is so broad)).

Of course it’s not gonna be useful for instantaneous results. Just a matter of how soon the results come in.

While two 12:06 AM’s in a row does not a pattern make, I’m now vaguely wondering if IFTTT schedules recipes at an hourly interval from whatever time they are last saved or some such. (I’ll add this to my “maybe one day I’ll get around to checking this” list.)

On Wednesday the recipe which I mentioned ran at 12:25 AM. Updated it at 12:26 AM.

It ran today at 12:06 AM.

Worked great. Got the listing and pic.

Had to make an adjustment since I had to be able to tell which notification was for which version of the recipe. Hope I didn’t mess up the timing.

I give up with finding a pattern.

12:22 AM on Sunday, 12:30 AM today.

Then again, 2 and 3 days ago though it ran at 12:06 AM, so for 3 days in a row, it ran at an interval of 24 hours. Although I expect that it checks more often, but it just doesn’t update.

@someRiverNoise The docs say it only triggers when there is a change, so the first check (by ifttt) after the meh rollover triggers it.

I had five texts at 12:06 AM (last one was Saturday morning for the Pursonic deal) and then all have been at 12:09 AM.

I decided that I wasn’t too keep on having the Twitter channel active for just one app for reasons which I can’t recall. I dunno. I woke up in the middle of the night (well, technically morning), opened IF, and disconnected Twitter.

I’ve been working on a new RSS feed for Meh anyways. So, perfect timing.
