@therealjrn Last Tuesday night I stopped in Shamrock, TX (just across the OK border). We slept in the parking lot of a seedy little Ace Hardware just off the interstate next to a large, abandoned motel. From what I saw, there wasn’t much luck in this Shamrock.
The one in gulf shores was so popular when we went through there that they had barricades up to make traffic lanes through the parking lot. Word had apparently spread about the wonder that is Buc-ees.
When you finally do land at a Buc-ee’s, try the fudge if you have any taste for that sort of thing. They have 15-20 flavors, their own recipes and they make it. They will let you sample any flavor for free. Or you can buy a box that has one of each.
Otoh, this is reputedly not health food. And not very keto either.
@f00l I have had this on my to-do list for years. Unfortunately, each time I’m passing through Amarillo it’s either too late, too early, or I’m on a timeline.
This time it’s a matter of economics. I believe there is an extremely strong chance I can finish the meal and get the comp. But… what if I’m having an off day? Then I have to fork over about a hundred dollars (meal, tax, tip). That’s not in the budget right now after all the expenses moving mom across the country.
So <sigh> Big Texan will have to continue simmering on my to-do.

The northernmost Buc-ee’s might be in Melissa, Tx or Denton, Tx.
They started sw of Houston near Freeport, and are expanding out fast.
They now have some open in coastal Alabama. They intend to open shortly in ne Florida along the coast
They do mean to open along freeways to the west and north as well. But each big store takes up to 2 years to open.
The DFW area only got their first Buc-ee’s about 2-3 years ago.
But nothing Amarillo way yet, AFAIK.

I have been accused of doing “walls of text”
The visual first encounter of a buttload of text on a forum encourages people to just skip past. And I don’t blame them.
Maybe people want to read my stuff. Or maybe they don’t.
But breaking it up makes that easier for someone to figure out. They can sample a small bit and see if they want the rest.
I think a layout artist told me that?
Or maybe it just a stupid pretension.
I have lots and lots of those.

I also like to put spaces between paragraphs even if that paragraph is a single sentence. It makes it easier for me to read what I’ve written.
Also, since I’m not using paper, I’m not killing trees unnecessarily - just using a little bit more electricity and disk space.

Some of the Buc-ee’s with 120 pumps and 80 restroom stalls are “too small”. So say the customers and the staff.
It isn’t out of malice, it’s just hard to get excited about Amarillo.

Among their offerings is a 72oz steak meal. I think the cost is $72.
Meal consists of:
Shrimp Cocktail,
Baked Potato,
Salad, with Roll, Butter,
and of course the 72 oz. Steak
If you can eat the entire meal by yourself within 1 hour, the cost is refined and the meal is free.
(of course, re health considerations, you’re on your own.)
Their steaks (i have been told) have a decent rep, apart from this contest.
They also have a dinosaur statue in the premises for some reason. Perhaps folks in the panhandle just need something to do every day to keep busy.
