I see a lot of “don’t read while on vacation” sentiment. I agree that I am not going to be reading while I am at my destination, but the responses make me think of a plane full of David Puddys.
I like it when I’m able to find a novel that’s set in the location of my vacation! I also like reading stuff about the area. This is for foreign locations, usually. If I’m in the US maybe just a mystery novel or magazines.

Menus from fancy restaurants. Because that’s what my vacations are for.
The itinerary to a tropical island, the fancy menu (to impress my wife), the bill I can’t afford, the glow of my wife’s smile.
The only thing I read on vacation is the menu. Vacation is a time to do stuff, not spend it reading. I can do that at home.
I love biographies and I love medical text books, especially on neuroscience.
If by vacation you mean that 15 minutes between getting into bed and falling asleep then mystery, horror, or adventure.
