Art is only relaxing once you get good enough to do it with minimal thought. Sculpting wood and stone is near that point for me, but it can be heckin stressful when you start out. I feel like some other options might easier to reach that point. But fingerpainting will never reach that point because I can’t not think about how annoying paint is to clean off my hands.
@mbersiam@simplersimon That was very cool! I only watched, didn’t draw along.
Lack of perspective is the issue I have most often when trying do simple sketches of window treatments or cushions for work. I’m sure I can be taught but would rather concentrate on making them
@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@Star2236 I just asked her what she used to get that effect and she said she used a mesh like bag-like the ones that onions come in and molding paste-what ever that is.
I enjoy doing color-by-number or diamond painting, just so I can zone out but still make something beautiful. I’m not creative whatsoever, so this is all I get
@Deri143 I am not creative either. If I want to do something that is mindless I will wash the dishes (usually my teen’s job) or maybe some other cleaning. But how cluttered my house it tends to make my anxiety go up, not down
I actually find creating “consumable content” for like blogs, videos, social media, etc my most creative outlet and I actually quite enjoy it.
in college (art school) i majored in design, so for my electives i always took something hands on to give me a break from the computer. i took multiple semesters each of bookbinding and printmaking. printmaking is the favorite by a hair, but large metal plates, vats of acid, and a printing press don’t really jive with one bedroom boston apartment living, yanno?
bookbinding is nice but, if you don’t fill the books with anything and you’ve already given your fair share of them to friends and family over the years, it’s a bit of a waste.
my art pursuits and hobbies always lean analytical - there’s lots of planning, measuring, math, fine tuning, etc. looking at a blank canvas is not relaxing to me. creativity is not relaxing to me. it can be energizing, fun, inspiring…but relaxing? no. it may seem counterintuitive, but for me to turn my brain off and relax i need rules. so a coloring book would be most suited to me, and i do have several.
@jerk_nugget Yes, I agree completely - or, I can get to a place that’s relaxing when I’ve worked out how the project’s going to go and I’m carrying out the repetitive steps in the process and it’s going well - them I can get in the “zone” and that’s wonderful. But getting to that point is often a lot of work; enjoyable, but not relaxing.
Sorting pennies by year and mint and then rolling them facing the same way and marking the year on the paper. I don’t know why I love doing this. I just do.
@AuntMean67 i used to love rolling change with my dad! i can still feel those soft paper wrappers in my mind. (and i’d still roll my coins if i had any, but we never have cash on hand anymore much less change!) i do love repetitive organizational tasks like that.
@Star2236 Store them or give them as gifts. I have nieces/nephews in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s who have hung on to them after all these years instead of spending them.
Yesterday was best place to chill.
Today is most relaxing art…
There is a theme building… I predict a Relax-athon is just around the corner… It’s like a mehrathon only extra slow and there is 24 hours between items.
I have a whole craft room still packed up in the basement from a move in October that I need to get unpacked and set up. I’m excited to do it but very overwhelmed and that just puts me off. I really wanna stupid COVID to be over so o can take a nice pottery class without a mask on. Mask and clay don’t mix very well.

@simplersimon I’m guessing you don’t work on cars.
@tweezak I do, but not as a relaxing art

@simplersimon Agree! I can’t draw a line without a ruler so anything artsy stresses me out!
@callow @simplersimon I watched this yesterday and was surprised that it sort of worked for me

Scratching your leg with your fingernail when pooping so that it leaves red marks on your leg.
@OnionSoup Do you scratch the whole time or only when a package is moving through the pod bay doors?
@OnionSoup @yakkoTDI I am not going to be able to sleep tonight thinking about the answer to that question.
@Felton10 @yakkoTDI
All the time… not just when the bombs are dropping…
And … Sometimes it’s good to have aphantasia.
Artistic contemplation of my next drink.
Music.
Cooking, especially if it involves real fire.
Working on my long term couch butt imprint. Years in the making.
@tweezak kind of like this?
@mbersiam @tweezak Just woke up the rest of the house laughing at this …
Does playing with your bubble wrap count as art-maybe not but popping the wrap is certainly relaxing.
@Felton10 You could pop it in an artful pattern.
@Kidsandliz Too tame-prefer to take out all my frustrations on the bubble wrap until totally decimated.
@Felton10 @Kidsandliz
You can do bubble wrap art.
@Kidsandliz @Star2236 I don’t do art. My wife is the artist in the family. This is her latest creation.
@Felton10 @Kidsandliz @Star2236 Nice! Did she use bubble wrap to get that texture in the upper left corner?
@Felton10 @Kyeh @Star2236 Observant!
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh @Star2236 I just asked her what she used to get that effect and she said she used a mesh like bag-like the ones that onions come in and molding paste-what ever that is.
@Felton10 @Kidsandliz @Star2236 Oh, okay! Well, she might get some cool effects with your favorite substance, too …

Needlework
Acrylic pouring. Just use more paint than you think you’ll need.

@katbyter Better than Carney? Garfunkel?

@AuntMean67
What do you do with the pennies then?
@AuntMean67 i used to love rolling change with my dad! i can still feel those soft paper wrappers in my mind. (and i’d still roll my coins if i had any, but we never have cash on hand anymore much less change!) i do love repetitive organizational tasks like that.

I have taken the nap to it’s highest art form.

@OnionSoup maybe they’ll offer a hammock!
Papercrafting.
Right now I’m into Lawn Fawn stuff. Stamps and dies and they have some super fun interactive type dies.
Watching their videos, I’m learning a lot about coloring. Blending and such (I did get the Spectrum Noir brushes offered here recently).
Stuff like this (finished card at 9:50):
Diamond art
Making sawdust
@rustyh3 what was your most recent project? Or most favorite?
Fart
Bodypainting
@rtjhnstn ones own? Or someone else’s?

@rtjhnstn That’s way more vulgar than what I was hoping for… lol
@OnionSoup Others of course, what fun is it to paint yourself!

Crochet. Coloring with crayons.
Does organizing things count as art? Does buying more organizing cubes / drawer organizers and stacking them mean I can be a cubist?
Lasers. I like making the art with the lasers!
