I live a few minutes from a new place in Pittsburgh, Threadbare, that has been doing cider for a while and promised mead, but were aging it. They just tapped, and it is on the sweet side, not cloying, but not super dry. Their cider is DRY! DRY! DRY! but good. I was surprised at the mead. But I like mead. Makes me feel like a viking. And melomel is good too. But it makes me wonder when I mention to someone making mead with fruit, and I say “oh, melomel” and they have no idea what I’m talking about, how serious are they? But maybe I’m just being pedantic.
I also don’t like Chaucers, but I like it on the sweet side. I didn’t care a lot for the dry meade casemates did last year.
My favorite is in the dead of winter, around the holidays, served warm and mulled, it really warms up the insides.
Do not be afraid to do a flight as there is so much difference in how it is made.
One of my favorites years ago was ‘home made’ we called it soda pop meade because it was very young, and slightly effervescent with a very very low alcohol level. (around that of near beer).

I love mead. I live in Michigan and never heard of the place you people are talking about in MD. We don’t have a lot of mead around here. There are more and more brewery’s opening that have started experimenting with it though so hopefully it will pick up.
Love mead. I just bottled a batch with mixed berries (so technically a melomel rather than a true mead) a few days ago. We hope to get beehives in the next couple years, and that’s one of the things I plan to do with the honey.
Once at a convention in Toronto, I got to try some homemade mead brandy. Amazing stuff.

As long as it isn’t that cloyingly sweet Chaucer’s, I like mead. It was originally made from honey, and I prefer those that are. The best meads seem to be homemade. Now you’ve made me long for mead, and there’s no way I’m willing to travel to B-B-Baltimore to have some.
I see that they also make Cider (another excellent thing to drink). Casemates ought to have a quick Friday sale with these fellows.

I’ve experienced quite a few not great meads with weird tastes and negative finishes, but all their stuff is on point.
Not sure if a lot of people have experience with mead. I usually think of it when I go to renaissance festivals or I have a suddenly need to drink something that isn’t wine or beer.
We have a great producer here called Prairie Rose Meadery in Fargo, ND! They actually recommend some of their mead to be used in cocktails, which really opened up my eyes for the use of mead! They ship nationwide if you’re interested…Prairie Rose Meadery

my family is norse, sort of surprised I never saw something like that growing up.
But no big wine drinkers there, save my father and then not until he was in his 70’s

Basil lemongrass and retired by the fire are my two favorites. I tend to prefer draft style mead.

I enjoy leaky roof meadery out of south Missouri. Their stuff is pretty sweet, but not cloying like a lot of meads.
