@katylava I bought one of the new Purple Harmony pillows, and I love it. Lighter and more soft/bouncy than the original gel pillow. I really hope it lasts for a while because it’s ridiculously expensive.
@katylava@rockblossom I bought a purple and really enjoyed it, but returned it because I came into a free mattress that was pretty good and $1k was a lot for a mattress I no longer really needed.
Tip: Check your local craigslist for Purple returns if you don’t mind a lightly used Purple mattress. They are listed at half price and you can still talk them down further.
@katylava@mike808@rockblossom They don’t say it is “new” they say it has been used for “less than 100 days” and that they’re “clean and wrapped in plastic” so I think it is safe to say they are trial returns. Honestly, if I knew about that before ordering my new purple mattress, I would have bought a Queen Purple 2 for $700 or so. I am in Cali.
@hchavers Me too, but not coach. After awhile I got upgraded to 1st class do to my Platinum status on United. LAX to OGG every month for four years. 5.5 hrs not too bad. But IAH to MUC every other month is a real drag man. 10.5 hrs. CoVid has put a stop to it for now but…soon it will be on again!
@ThunderChicken Try putting a mattress pad on top of it. I have a firm mattress but it didn’t have enough padding on top so my hips and in particular my lower back hurt and sometimes my entire back hurt. Adding two waffle foam pads from walmart solved the problem. I also found a chiropractor helped. Took several tries to find one that did some good though. Research has documented that people often find that they help more than other approaches done by the MD world with back pain (that isn’t due to something serious).
I bought a sleep number bed and I like that I can change up the support as well as raise my sore, swollen legs and feet way up high! Of course these days most beds are available with a adjustable base. I DO however love a good mattress topper, down feathers is my preference and it should be at least two and a half inches thick! It’s like what i’d imagine sleeping on a cloud would be!!

We use a Sleep Number which we like. We have different levels, as I prefer more firm and my wife adjusts her side to be somewhat softer. It is their less expensive model and was much, much, less expensive than a regular mattress. In trying mattresses in stores we could not tell what we liked in 5 minutes on the bed, so we figured this would work and it did.
I sleep on the floor now on a not very squishy foam mat that’s about maybe 1/4" thick. Floor with carpet padding is more comfortable than wood. Therefore, “soft”.
@RiotDemon Sorta. There’s a couple angles. I had a Tempurpedic matress that wore out, and then I didn’t know what to get to replace it, and the floor is compellingly inexpensive.
At the same time, I broke my back a little, I believe, when I was 19, leaving me with “idiopathic scoliosis”, so lying on the floor is an opportunity to stretch out against a hard surface, which can be kind of a relief.
I get a little pain here and there, but the worst of that was the first month or so, and it’s fairly uncommon now.
@InnocuousFarmer@RiotDemon You could also put a piece of thicker plywood on your bed frame and then put the entire set up on that if you wanted to have your bedroom look more “normal”.
I’d agree though that the floor can be comfortable (I also have scoliosis for genetic reasons and stretching out on something hard my back can go crack crack crack and that helps). When I used to work in outdoor adventure we’d essentially be sleeping on the “floor” with a very thin closed cell foam half pad. Up in Canada we’d be sleeping on the granite rock slabs because everywhere else had so many pine tree roots everything else was really lumpy. The rock and a thin pad seemed fine and didn’t bother me at all.
When taking adjudicated youth canoeing across the state of FL we’d use our life jackets as “foam pads”. And I still sleep in the back of my minivan on a 2" foam mattress/air mattress (eg air mattress that has foam in there). That is comfortable as long as I have the correct amount of air in there.
Yeah… I’m not a landlord but I don’t think I’d want a waterbed anywhere near the floors of my house.
I have no memory of how/why but I had a waterbed as a kid for a couple of years. It was fun but even as a kid it hurt my back sometimes and I’d end up sleeping on the floor or the couch. It also leaked after a while so even if I didn’t wet the bed my bed did sometimes wet me.

You can’t be soft with mattresses, they’ll just take advantage of you. Stay firm, remind them who’s boss.

Check your state law on mattress resale. Most appear to allow it as long as you clearly note that it is not new. If it is not legal in your, CL probably wont allow an ad for it anyway.

Soft or firm? Yes. I’ll take sleep however I can get it.
I learned to sleep in coach seats on international flights. Just please avoid the turbulence.

I think my back problems are due in part from too soft a mattress. Now I sleep on a firm one, but my back is so wrecked it hurts to sleep on it. Crap.

Mid with leaning towards firm. Like 65% firm.
I’d do firm if I didn’t have to sleep on my side because of my sleep apnea. I really wish I could sleep on my back.
I think you should prefer a hard mattress. Because getting out of the soft bed is difficult.
