Know anyone who wants a kitty? Hollins VA
15Last month, one of my facebook friends lost her husband. She died last week. She left behind three cats. Her brother took them to a shelter.
Let me know if you know anyone that can help and I will pass the info along…
They are located in Hollins, VA, which is in Roanoke County. Please share and let me know if you know anyone in Virginia who might be able to help. My contact is trying to get more information, so this is all I have at this time. Thank you!
Jenny (5y/o Grey & White Polydactyl), Zoey (4y/o long haired Tortiseshell Friendliest of the group), Kayley (4y/o Calico Shyest of the group). All 3 are spayed & up to date on shots. I left vet records at the shelter. Any & all help for the cats is Greatly Appreciated

I’m so glad the cats are safe. I have willed my paid-off farm and a trust fund for the care of my animals to niece. I never want my animals to have to leave their home.

@lisaviolet GOOD NEWS!!! I just got off the phone with the no-kill shelter the kill shelter recommended and they are going to take them once the kill shelter releases them. That no kill shelter is http://www.angelsofassisi.org/
@Kidsandliz So, how does that work? Does someone have to take them over or the nk shelter will pull them?

Here is the deal. Lisa at Angels of Assisi (no kill shelter where they are going) and Dave at RCACP (kill shelter where they are) will work together. RCACP is going to do the pre-adoption things at the kill shelter to help out the no kill shelter out and then the no kill shelter will come get them. That part will take place without a hitch. RCACP said they’d copy me on the emails to Lisa and I am also emailing Lisa the control numbers of the animals.
I asked about donations at both places and both places said no need to do that, although I am sure that they would not turn down money LOL. Lisa had immediately said they’d take them when I told her the story. I didn’t even need to have to try to convince her. RCACP seems to be one of the better kill shelters since they were really nice about this.
I also re-confirmed that all the dogs have a home. Apparently all the family came to the kill shelter yesterday and left with the dogs and left behind the cats.
@Kidsandliz This is such good news. Someone on my facebook wall is friends with someone at Assisi.

@lisaviolet I just got an email from the no-kill shelter. They have heard from the kill shelter about the kitties. Now that they have connected over this I think we can rest easy as now it seems unlikely that someone will drop the ball over this.
It was a good use of my morning even if no fuko and I likely missed the 50% off the big Dove chocolate hearts at the grocery store too (running off now to check to see if any are left anyway LOL).

And I was in luck - Dove chocolate left at 1/2 off! That the cats are safe made my day, the chocolate is just icing on the cake so to speak. Now for that fuko in a half hour…(which I no doubt will not get) LOL

@lisaviolet By the grace of who knows what gods I actually got one at 4. Was only VMP due to buying the water bottles for siblings for next christmas. I think it sold out in like 23 seconds or something. No idea why I was lucky this time. Probably partly because this time just a check box and not a million pictures to click on… anyway it has been more than a 2 year drought with those so we shall see if there is anything in it worth anything beyond the purple bag.

@Kidsandliz I’m guessing you got the Fuko because the Fuko Angels have been following this thread and knew you deserved it.

@Kidsandliz As someone in a movie once said, “One never knows, do one?” The Fuko Angels probably have a pet-lovers sub-group, and they all work in mysterious ways. I’d like to think that, anyway. You did great work on this project.
@magic_cave Thanks for the complement. All I did was make a few phone calls though. The people I talked to were nice. Anyone making the calls would have been successful because of the helpful people on the other end of the line.
No kill shelter? If not how many days left?
Also maybe if someone knows anyone at Hollin’s College they can spring them and foster them until they find homes? Maybe we can chip in to cover the cost of springing them so someone can afford to take them?
If it is a kill shelter maybe they will keep them if we chip in to pay for their upkeep until they find a home. I did that once with a cat I found in a rest area. I paid monthly until that cat found a home. Took about 3 months.
I volunteer at a no kill shelter here. I have no idea if they know anyone through the network that can get them out but I will ask Peggy.
Looks like there is at least one no kill shelter in Roanoke, VA. I hope the cats were taken there. If not maybe we can do what is in my post above this one? There seems to be a total of 6 shelters there, one of which is for dogs, one is animal control. Then there are two more about equidistant north of there. I’d bet if we called them all we’d find the shelter as likely they’d know the cats since they came in together, have vet records, have that story and came recently.

I feel so bad for these guys. The husband had some upper respiratory problem, he was in the hospital, I think he had a tracheotomy and the tube came out. They couldn’t get it back in and he died (he was pretty heavy). His wife, heartbroken, who had health problems of her own was really depressed at his passing. Not a lot of money, I guess no insurance and her brother posted that she had passed away.
He didn’t even try to find homes for the cats that I know of, didn’t post on her timeline looking for homes (although he did post that she’d died), looks like he just took them to a shelter. I bet those kitties are just lost.
@lisaviolet Wish I was there to at least pull them from the shelter. I’ll call Peggy in the morning and ask her if she has any contacts there who can at least pull strings to get them into a no kill shelter if they are not in one or at least get them out of a kill one until they can be transferred. I’ll also ask her if there is any way she can arrange transport to here to her no kill shelter if they aren’t already in one. I know her shelter is part of a transfer network.
How long have they been in a shelter? Many kill shelters kill the same day if they are owner relinquished. Some give them 3 days and some a week. Few give more than that unless they have room.
Tragic about your friend an her husband. Did they have any kids? I sure hope not as they’d sure be struggling now.

@Kidsandliz I appreciate you doing this. If we weren’t on the other coast, I’d be working on the hubs to bring them here, even though we said no more cats. At least they’d be together.
I just got off the phone with the shelter. We have 9 days (last day is the 24th). This family also had a number of dogs but apparently other family took all of them and didn’t want the cats although they are hoping some family might step forward (doesn’t seem to likely to me since the dogs are all placed). They will not accept donations to keep them alive longer. I will see if the no-kill shelter here can get things in the works to get them out.
@Kidsandliz let me know if you need $$ help for pulling if needed. Are you on Facebook? I’m sure more would be willing to help financially.

Also try to put up notices and info in local posting sites. Sometimes newspapers will put in lost/found/need-home pet ads or certain types for free.
Also flyers on posts and physical posting boards at businesses can help.

For those who don’t want to read the entire thread, 3 kitties, owner of them died within a month of her husband (friends of lisaviolet), family took the dogs and the cats landed in a kill shelter, we got them into a no kill one.
@Kidsandliz I haven’t heard anything, I’ll ask this week.

@Kidsandliz That was the extent of her reply. I would guess still in foster care (they’re in a home together, not the shelter).
@lisaviolet That’s good they are in a foster home together rather than the shelter. That is better for them.
