@werehatrack Seriously though, I have a middle ear problem (small bone fusion) that causes internal sounds to be audible, and sometimes quite distracting (I’m like the guy in the old commercial crunching away on his cereal in his cubicle while his coworker is droning on to him, though it can be useful to be able to hear your heartbeat when you have occasional AFib like I do–usually well-controlled by daily meds).
When it bothers me a lot, I find my MP3 player and headphones and crank up some of my favorite music (CCR is good for this) and drown it out. Afterward, I don’t tend to hear those internal sounds as much. (A little nerve numbness, or the brain surrenders?)
@phendrick My phone “ringeth” not. I use the Looney Tunes excerpt from Merry Go Round Break Down as my default. My inner ear, however, generates its own ringing from the tinnitus that is gradually getting worse.
@mcanavino Yeah, I feel like headphones are one of the things that I can’t go refurbished - just wigs me out.
Somebody tell me why I’m wrong, like I’m not getting the point that refurbed headphones and the like are really just customer returns, not “pre-worn.” That’s the world I’d prefer to be in.
@accelerator I expect that you’re right on that one. And they’d wipe down the headband with a disinfecting cleaner to remove all potential residues there. Some states have fairly explicit health regs about selling used kit of this type, so that’s the minimum that I think they are likely to have done.
@mcanavino@sfwineguy most likely they are open boxes and returns without use or just an old batch that didn’t sold, i can’t believe hundreds of people would buy, use and return them.
I own a pair of these- I really like them. Except mine have tropical flowers on them. You can never have too many headphones.

Gosh, a Bluetooth headphone that only claims to have a 30 ft range, which is likely to be close to honest? How did that happen? I thought there was a rule that all specs like that had to be inflated to at last double these days. (I’ve seen claims of a 450 ft range for a Bluetooth device; there is zero chance I’ll believe horseshit like that.)
@werehatrack Advertised BT ranges are based on radio class and measured with line of sight through open air.
In this case, 30’ means 10 meters means a Class 2 radio. The only options are Classes 1, 2, and 3, with operating ranges of 100 meters, 30 meters, and 1 meter, respectively.
You might find headphones that advertise a 300’ range, which would indicate a Class 1 radio, but they’d only ever potentially achieve that range in perfect conditions and when paired with another device that also has a Class 1 radio.
Any manufacturer advertising a 450’ range should be filed in the ‘lies about product specs, avoid’ column of your mental list of brands.
I’m looking for noise cancelling headphones that I can sleep with. My wife has a CPAP and it’s made life so much better for both of us, but when she’s sick she pulls it off and sounds like a 90’s Civic. I have some Anker Soundcore buds that work great, unless she’s snoring, but they aren’t the best to sleep in for hours. I’m usually a side sleeper, so that’s most of the issue with most buds and over-ear headphones.
@fuzzmanmatt I wouldn’t recommend wearing earbuds to sleep since they’re silicone and will inevitably gather bacteria and increase your risk of an ear infection. Foam earplugs are probably the way to go, unless you insist on listening to music. Sadly, the only sleep-focused headphones I know of aren’t noise cancelling, but they are very flat. Just search for “sleep mask Bluetooth headphones” and you’ll find a number of ~$25 options. Don’t get the overpriced scammy ones from Instagram and Facebook ads that are literally the same AliExpress trash but being sold at a huge margin.
@heartny You know what’s funny, I have two boxes of those here at work. I suppose if I combine them with my AfterShokz I could probably get some good isolation when I need it.
@fuzzmanmatt@heartny
Creative Outlier Air V3s, best noise cancelling earbuds ive tried for sleeping. Great sound and active noise cancelation with a small profile you wont notice while sleeping.
@fuzzmanmatt For decent dampening that stays in place, you can get moldable plastic foam that you press into place and allow to harden to the shape of the outer section of the ear. If you embed the ends of a piece of cord with a knot at each end, you can even make them into a custom pair that you can keep around your neck until they’re needed.
@fuzzmanmatt@heartny Can confirm, not only does this work well for the stated goal, I’ve found that my AfterShokz sound quality is vastly improved by the addition of foam earplugs.
Sometimes “refurbished” is code for “This is the overstock of the old model that we just replaced”, and sometimes it’s code for “This is the batch that didn’t quite make it through quality control unscathed.” There are other possibilities as well, but that latter one is something I’ve encountered a couple of times too often.
Looking at a review of these on YT. They say it comes with a pouch for storage and travel as well as a USB-C to mini audio jack for plugging in. Are these included in the “Refurbished” box?
@Chronicle I don’t know about that, but the linked manual (which looks more like a quick-start) makes no mention of using them in a wired manner. If that USB-to-audio-including-mic cable exists and is included, that would make this a “buy” for me. I have non-Bluetooth things I would use it with.
@Chronicle It just comes with the charging cable, not the other one. I’ll get around to seeing if the system can recognize it via USB over the weekend.
I bought the JLab headset from side deal a weekish ago and I was sent these instead. I wanted the ones with the boom mic for my kids not these which will probably sound terrible.
I wish I had read this on their webpage for this product before grabbing a pair.

can I use a usb-c to 3.5mm audio adapter to make these wired?

These do not have the option to be wired via an adapter. -JLab
I guess that explains why the adapter in the picture elsewhere is not included with them. And I will note that it is absent from the photo on their website.
At least the ear cups are a reasonable fit despite the relatively small outside dimensions; the margins are thinner to make that work.
Wish I could also get my hearing refurbished.
@phendrick I wish I didn’t hear that damn constant ringing.
@werehatrack I find that answering the phone cuts down on the ringing.
[sorry]

“Form-Fit Earcups are ergonomically shaped to the natural outline of the ear”
So they smell and look like the last owner’s ears. Wonderful.

@mcanavino Hoping, but just guessing, the foam will be replaced before resale. That’s the fantasy world I choose to live in.

“They’ll last 50 hours.”
Good thing there’s a 90 day warranty.
Kinda explains the refurbs.
People often compliment/question me on my JLAB headphones. But I have moderate to severe social anxiety so I actually hate that.

Earplugs wouldn’t work, @fuzzmanmatt?
@fuzzmanmatt Howard Leight Disposable Foam Earplugs work great, assuming you don’t want to listen to music while you sleep.

That’s what I was going to suggest, those bright orange foam earplugs. (I’m sure any color would work
@fuzzmanmatt
I use this. It’s a headband that is comfortable and good for side sleepers.

Meh should have made the last picture with an actual Labrador. Hmm… Is that a refurbished Labrador?
@hchavers What so you call a funny Labrador?
A humador.
@mcanavino Only if it smokes cigars.
Wish they were smaller for kids and tablets
@audiocontr Why are your tablets wearing headphones?

@werehatrack Unless it’s in an IRK, then it’s handle with hazmat gear during disposal.
Those write-up puns are the worst (i.e. best!) i’ve seen in a long time. nicely done!

Can I pay with refurbished money?
@wrongonred That’s about the only kind I ever see.
@blaineg @wrongonred They don’t even bother trying to clean mine up before I get it.
