I’m a side person. I’m going to my boyfriends brothers house today and their not even having normal sides, I’m so disappointed. All were having is turkey, Mac n cheese and stupid hillbilly beans. Oh and pecan pie
@sammydog01 My son usually makes a double crust apple pie (from scratch, using apples from our trees), but since he can’t make it this year it fell to me. I’ve made pies before, but never a double cruster. It turned out pretty good, but not as visually pleasing as his pies.
The sides were the star of tonight’s meal. I barely ate any ham.
This was the first time I had to cook with a gas oven and that thing was temperamental as hell. My pie took an extra 30 minutes and the crust at the bottom was soggy still. But it tasted good.
@RiotDemon you may need to get an oven thermometer and do some science. Stick it in different places and different rack heights in the oven to find the hotter and cooler spots and maybe translate from what the controls are set at to what the real temperature is. Some are bad about it.
I love mine, i upgraded from a gas cooktop with electric oven to all gas this spring after the broiler element quit working in the old one (and best buy had a 40% off open box sale). So far it has performed well. But I’ve used ones that weren’t so great in the past.
@djslack@RiotDemon also have to consider with gas the byproduct is heat AND moisture. Electric is a dry heat that will pull moisture out… Gas is fine just won’t behave exactly the same way.
I should have been able to answer just from my heart, but I proved by doing today. It’s definitely all about the sides.
I made my mom’s cornbread dressing recipe this year, not awful for my first go at it. The sweet potato casserole was great. Green bean casserole is a Thanksgiving tradition for us, its pretty good I guess. My mom’s pineapple salad that’s like a jello mold from the 60s is a requirement. And my wife made a corn casserole that she wanted to try, I thought it was very good.
I mean, I saw at least three sticks of butter go into sides today so it should be no surprise that they’re good. But if it weren’t for tradition I could have skipped the turkey altogether. If not getting legs and wings doesn’t upset my dad too much, I may continue doing just a breast even when everyone gets together. Easier to cook and less leftovers to deal with.
Do desserts count as sides? Then it’s all about the sides. Even if they don’t, it’s still all about the sides. I would be just as happy if there were no room for the turkey on my plate (or today it was ham).
I’m perfectly happy to have all the turkey leftover to make croquettes with.
@katbyter Since I filled up the day/night before with all the traditional lebonese sides my mom made for me, deserts were the main course for me! Lol, and boy oh boy were they good!!
I couldn’t care less if I even saw a bird! Since we cancelled any kind of gathering in our family, my mom still sent me over a bunch of my favorite traditional lebonese sides. Chicken rice stuffing minus the chicken, thats eaten with plain yogurt/leban, (home-made yogurt/leban of course) grape-leaves, black olives, syrian bread and feta cheese, cooked kibbie and meat-pies. I’m in heaven, pure heaven all week!! YUM, YUM, YUM!!
Sides bayyybeeee.
Cornbread and sausage dressing with gravy from the turkey drippings! Everything else (including the turkey) is just “sides” to me.
@macromeh oh, cornbread - almost forgot it! Thanks for the reminder (runs to check cupboard, wonders if store still open)…
I have to agree, the turkey is important but sides and the second helping are the reason I often hate myself later that day.
Gravy FTW!!! On EVERYTHING except cranberry- orange relish and pumpkin pie
ALL OF IT!!!
The leftovers
Except this year – the people.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving one and all.
@Cerridwyn I agree, the people are delicious
@Cerridwyn @jmoor783 with gravy, of course!
@j2 @jmoor783
bloodwine
@Cerridwyn Happy Thanksgiving
@Cerridwyn @j2 @jmoor783 And fava beans as a side.
Sides… definitely the sides
Sides win hands down. Cook the bird for the gravy to go on the potatoes and stuffing.
The carby sides! Stuffing, mashed potatoes, and sweet potatos.

@Star2236 Omg, POOR YOU!! I’m with YOU, it’s ALL about the sides for ME TOO!!
The bird,
if it is not too chewy.
The rest is fine, but tends to be higher volume, lower satisfaction. Bread things and starch things…
My daughter is making an apple pie and a pumpkin pie. There are four of us.

@macromeh I used to make pie crusts but the refrigerated ones are almost as good. It’s nice to know it’s not a lost art.
Sides are the best part. Turkey is only good inside of a roll in sandwich form

@djslack I would, but it’s my friend’s house. She hates gas and wants to switch to electrical anyway.

Blind baking helps too

Turkey is pretty gross on its own. Sides are where it’s at.
Oh and pie.

/youtube it’s all about that baste
I had no idea this existed before trying but you just know it had to
But yes. Sides in general
