@wew When my old Sansa Clip (not even a Clip+) finally died last year, I replaced it with an AGPTEK A12.
The interface is definitely not as good as the old Sansa. It’s also not quite as good for audiobooks because the fast-forward and rewind are too slow, and locking the controls is a bit more annoying.
It’s doing its job, though.
@Limewater are you familiar with Rockbox? That is one of the great things about most Sansas’–you can Put rockbox on it.
I stocked up on a few clip zips when they were on sale, but my stock is dwindling! Thanks for the tip on the AGPTEK A12, (doens’t exactly roll off the tongue!) I never heard of that one.
Yesterday I saw this Eclipse mp3 player with a touchscreen for $12-unbelievable. It seems to be marketed towards kids, so I’m thinking it’s pretty junky.

@wew Yeah. Unfortunately, my understanding is that none of the small modern Sansas can run Rockbox, and the AGPTEK, unfortunately, can’t either at the moment.
There was talk a couple of years ago about trying to port Rockbox to the AGPTek, but it never happened. I think, like the newer Sansa, the SoC it’s based on just can’t handle it.
I used my old Clip all the time while doing yardwork or cleaning, and plugged into the cassette adapter in my truck, mostly listening to audiobooks. It probably lasted me about eight years until the screen died. Otherwise, it still works.
Having no display makes audiobooks difficult, though.
I don’t understand. Where do I plug my phone in? Where are the speakers? Is it made of a fancy kind of steel? Does it fold for convenience and safety? Will it stay fresher if I store it in the refrigerator?!?
Not a bad deal. We bought the 671 on Prime Day for just $10 more (and it’s new, not refurb), but it didn’t come with virtual walls like this one does. I fortunately had a few left laying around from a previous Roomba that met a tragic and horrible end, so we’re using them. The option to use an app and schedule the cleanings is great. If I get out somewhere and realize it’s about to run its cycle and I forgot to put Fido in his crate for the day, then I can cancel it remotely.
Oh and yes, Roomba doesn’t like shoe laces, odd bits of plastic wrap, paper receipts, and other things in its way. It’ll try to suck them up, then they will wrap around the wheel, and Roomba will be stuck. It will message you via the app to come and HELP! So make it a habit to check the floor briefly each day before leaving, if Roomba is scheduled to run.
BTW, the newer models give you an option to name yours in the app. Ours gives a nod to my New Mexico roots: Rug Runner … beep! beep!
I went out and looked for shooting stars tonight. I think I saw one.The weatherman said up to 100 an hour. I wanted to reach through that tv set and smack the beejeebsus out of him. I’ve been watching meteor shower my whole life, and I never saw 100 an hour. Hey Weatherman, did you ever even see a shooting star?
The point being, if I would have owned this Roomba, I could have stayed out longer looking for shooting stars.

@wew I set up to watch a major storm one night and counted approximately 165 meteors in about an hour and a half. I screwed up and looked down at my tally sheet to make sure I moved my pen to a clean area and the night lit up so I was able to see every mark on the sheet. By the time I looked back up, the fireball was gone and all that was left was a long smoke trail. My point . . . if you are in a decent location with relatively dark skies, you might be amazed at how many meteors a major storm can provide, plus, you might see more than “standard” meteors.
@CatFriend It was a few decades ago, I was about 20 and saw my first fireball. I watched the news the next few days expecting to see a crashed airplane or—ALIENS!
I saw one meteorite shower years ago, but mostly it’s just one here and there.
The biggest thrill anymore is showing someone their first falling star.
@wew It was probably about fifteen to twenty years ago for my fireball, also. As interesting as it was, the biggest thrill I got along those lines was when I first saw Saturn through a telescope. Actually seeing the rings around the planet with my own eyes blew me away. I doubt I’ll ever forget that.

I hadn’t remembered it for decades, but just yesterday I was telling someone “When I was your age”,(yeah, I do that sometimes! ), “I remember driving 40 minutes to see the rings of Saturn through the scope of a telescope some amateur astronomy club built.”
And this might interest you…there’s a site,APOD, that has a different astronomy picture every day. And there’s a widget, or app, or whatever you call it, that will grab the pic every day and set it as your background pic for 24 hours.
I really stretched the meteorite/Roomba connection, but it paid off for me!
@wew I’ve been to APOD several times when looking for specific astronomy photos (NGC 4414 was one I recall finding there and downloading), but haven’t been there in a long time. They have some beautiful images. I didn’t know about the app, but I like the idea.
When I lived in California, I twice drove for about an hour and a half to two hours to get to the desert to view Halley’s Comet (once before it passed behind the sun, and once after it reappeared), so I understand how a drive to see something can add to the memory. Some things are worth the effort.
iRobot vacuums are so 2010s, and so are the a bit too modern for us who follow Meh. We are more iPhone 5 speaker dock and USB Micro phone charger buyers.
This, while costing twice as much, seems to deal with many of them:

You can replace the filters, clean other filters, and buy replacement brushes and spinners.
Mine isn’t meant for mopping either. I wouldn’t imagine it would work better than a swiffer anyhow.
Deebot has never gone crazy on me, but he does whine a lot when he gets stuck or swallows some cables. It surely forces tidiness.
@Kawa I have the Deebot n79 too – it’s cheaper and it basically does exactly the same thing as the Roomba. (Just – no virtual walls. I have these things called “doors” that I use to control the area where my Deebot goes.)
@radi0j0hn I agree…when you buy anything today, you are buying tech…and that includes vacuums that are designed to pick up and filter dirt…by generating lift around the roller…Thats why, despite every internet expert telling you otherwise…a modern lightweight vacuum like a Simplicity Freedom does a better job than a 20 year old kirby…
This an excellent deal. I am so impressed with my 2 year old battle-worn 805 I got from Costco for almost twice this price that I bought 2 here (one for each level).
We have 3 dogs (including a Husky) and 2 cats that shed massively and also occasionally leave “mistakes”. The 805 has waded through dog mess multiple times (it made a bigger mess - not its fault), and survived some pretty brutal cleanings with garden hose. I expected it to die, but it did not.
We have all hard floors and low pile area rugs, and although I usually have to empty it more than once during daily cycles on the main floor, it chugs along with the original battery.
Yes, it zig zags randomly and may miss a spot here and there, it will eventually get it. I do not consider wifi control of a robot vacuum cleaner a worthwhile feature for the price.
Also, the customer service with Roomba is the best I have encountered lately. I have called twice ( a broken latch, and a broken filter door - a weak point, they will send you one for free if you ask even out of warranty) and my issues were resolved within minutes of calling.
@yakkoTDI they all do- rolling around on the floor making weird noises while snorting anything in it’s path before stuttering to a halt and requiring an intervention.
Meh must have sent a suicide signal to the Deebot Mini I got from the last fuko. It unsuccessfully tried to clean my stairs last night for the first time. I was able to shove some wires back in and pop a couple pieces back on it and it still works! No need for a Roomba… Yet.

I bought a Roomba several years ago. Two replacements failed to work even as well as the originally-purchased one, and they lost the third one I returned to them. I vowed to never buy another one.
My wife got me a new one for christmas two years ago.
Still no improvement in performance or support, in fact they now mostly only bump-and-scoot along walls and couches, almost never make it near the center of any room, and still only have 30 minutes of battery at best.
Irobot says this is all perfectly normal.

@gdibig Well, if your household is like mine then the carpets need vacuuming every other day or so. And it’s nice to turn a robot loose while you’re prepping dinner or doing some other chore!
We just can’t get that on-board with robot vacuums right now. We’ve tried. With two young children, getting all the clutter off the floor is the primary obstacle to vacuuming, and makes up 90% of the work. Having a robot do the last, easiest 10% of the job just isn’t that appealing.
@Limewater Haha, try using the clutter as a protective coating. My brother and sister were slobs but the carpets in their rooms were pristine because they were constantly covered!

Well shucks, got my Roomba today and it’s defective. It runs for a few moments and then will stop and give “error 2” wanting me to open the brush cage and clean the “extractors”. They’re new and clean of course.
Ran through the troubleshooting and checked to make sure everything is installed correctly. No luck. Reached out to Meh for help.
Vacuum also has quite a few scuffs on it. I know it’s a refurb but still…
make sure you have the type of carpet this POS will work on…It won’t do shag…as many full size vacuums will not, including Dyson…Spend a little more, buy it at Costco or Bed Bath and Beyond so you can return it a year or so later when it breaks…which it will.
@FightingMongoos I’ve got the 960 and it’s much more methodical than the old models. It’ll basically do straight rows across the room and only do the bump-turn-bump thing when it hits a table leg or something similar.
@MilkyMoo You definitely would have to empty the tray every time it vacuumed. Maybe even during depending on the amount your two dogs shed. I love my Deebot, and I have one small dog and long hair. My wood floors are spotless all throughout my condo.
@MilkyMoo I bought the Deebot as well. We run it twice a day just to keep up with the dog hair. If “Dizzy” and I cross paths while she’s running, I’ll stop her and check her diaper…then send her on her merry way.
I have to say, for 100 bucks, she does a lot better job than I expected. We will upgrade to something a little more fancy one day, but not today.
@MilkyMoo It’ll probably become much more manageable once you set your bot to clean once a day. The first day or two after I received my Deebot, the tray got pretty full. After running it on the daily, I could probably get away with emptying a few times a week now.
What is the warranty on this? Can you get an extended one from someone like square trade? I bought the 670 as a prime day deal and it has worked great in my house but it has not virtual wall and that would be a great option. Don’t use the WiFi much on my current one.
The Roomba 960 is a great choice if you want a robot vacuum that will clean an entire room and run for a very long time without charging. It’s gonna feature roombas most advanced technology including their smartphone app that you can use to set it up to run on command or on a set schedule. This model specifically has about 75 minutes of run time and the only downside to this Roomba is it’s a little bit costlier than some of the other models.

I dunno. I bought the Deebot, and the dirt tray only holds a few ounces of dirt. I’ve got two dogs, so, yeah, that thing just don’t cut it.
@MilkyMoo You definitely would have to empty the tray every time it vacuumed. Maybe even during depending on the amount your two dogs shed. I love my Deebot, and I have one small dog and long hair. My wood floors are spotless all throughout my condo.
@goldnectar yeah, that thing was full halfway through my living room floor.
@MilkyMoo I bought the Deebot as well. We run it twice a day just to keep up with the dog hair. If “Dizzy” and I cross paths while she’s running, I’ll stop her and check her diaper…then send her on her merry way.
I have to say, for 100 bucks, she does a lot better job than I expected. We will upgrade to something a little more fancy one day, but not today.
@MilkyMoo It’ll probably become much more manageable once you set your bot to clean once a day. The first day or two after I received my Deebot, the tray got pretty full. After running it on the daily, I could probably get away with emptying a few times a week now.
What is the warranty on this? Can you get an extended one from someone like square trade? I bought the 670 as a prime day deal and it has worked great in my house but it has not virtual wall and that would be a great option. Don’t use the WiFi much on my current one.

The Roomba 960 is a great choice if you want a robot vacuum that will clean an entire room and run for a very long time without charging. It’s gonna feature roombas most advanced technology including their smartphone app that you can use to set it up to run on command or on a set schedule. This model specifically has about 75 minutes of run time and the only downside to this Roomba is it’s a little bit costlier than some of the other models.
