The best part about a roomba: being able to tell your kid, without lying, that any small toy on the floor will be eaten by the robot. It actually works- I only step on a lego like once a week now!
I returned a Roomba 655 to Amazon, that we got for Christmas.
Tried it for days.
It vacuumed 1/3 of the 1st floor quite good. It couldn’t get up on the large rug in the living room. It got confused a lot and would say to pick it up & place in another area. It attacked a power cord. One of our dogs kept growling at it. I think he could sense something…
It chased me around the house once, trying to kill me I think. I walked away from it & it would scoot in front of me again. I think it knew it was going to be returned. I’m pretty sure it was possessed and in control by Satan.
@daveinwarsh You might have gotten the Roomba agent Scully returned. You didn’t happen to eat in a sushi restaurant or ride in a driverless taxi earlier did you?
@daveinwarsh, @kuoh was referring to an episode of X-Files (new season) in which Scully and Mulder were under attack by robots because they didn’t tip at a sushi restaurant due to their order getting messed up big time
Finally finally finally. The worst thing I ever did was buy a Neato to replace my old 510 roomba. That thing felt like it was all the rejected design ideas for a roomba. The final straw was when I flipped the neato to clean out the brushes and when I flipped back over one of the face buttons just popped right off. After fighting the cats for it I realized it broke in at least three pieces and decided that was the last straw. As soon as the 805 comes in I’m Office Space’ing the neato.
I’ve got the 805. Her name is Nurse Ratchet. She is efficient and professional, and like her namesake she is a stickler for the rules and tends to follow me from room to room to make sure everything is in order. Everything left on the floor (shoes, charging cords, etc.) will be found and there will be consequences.
Runs about 90 minutes on a charge. Strengths: long run time, keeps hard floors dust and grit-free, and cleans under beds. Weaknesses: her edge-following algorithm occasionally closes the door when she enters a room (so she’ll run around that room until the battery is spent), gets wedged under dressers and end tables with openings that are tall enough to peek under but too short to completely enter.
I’m happy with her, although I admit I’m not crazy about her replacing me as the Alpha in my own home.
In order to make my roomba work better for me, I limited it to one room at a time. I don’t like the wireless barriers because sometimes my roomba disobeys. Sooooooooo, I made my own physical roomba stoppers as follows :
1 - Get some broomsticks without brooms, aka maybe 3/4" diameter dowel that is about 5 feet long.
2 - Covered broomstick in pipe insulator.
3 - Bought yellow foam construction sheet from Michael’s and cut in ~10" circle.
4 - Lay down “insulated” dowel across door threshold with yellow circle underneath.
You need the pipe insulator to protect the wall and keep roomba from climbing over the dowel, which it can do. A thicker dowel would also work, but it would weigh much more than a broom stick, so this is the best of all worlds, aka lightweight + thickness that the roomba cannot overcome.
The yellow circle is insurance to prevent me from tripping over the dowel by accident. I have cats, so I am already used to looking down on the ground, so the yellow circle works for me.
@Sardinicus The Aeroforce uses two bristleless, counter-rotating rollers which are supposedly snag free - something that long-haired pet owners should appreciate. Or owners of long-haired pets, as well.
I’d be tempted, but I’m saving my budget this month for Casamate.com.
@punkynpye they had an additional $30 off at the time I wrote it but I think it expired at 1am eastern. But yes, you’re correct—shipping is cheaper and having not purchased last night meh is now cheaper.
@hchavers@telepheedian The “tangle-free” rollers don’t get string wrapped around them as much, but the strings/hair do end up accumulating in the “pocket” on either side. You still need to clean that out once a week or two. (A huge improvement vs. every single run, but still not totally maintenance free.)
Just got a cheap Amazon replacement battery for my old Roomba (circa 2010), which I just replaced the sensors in, and I decided to try it in the 805. It works! The Roomba is charging normally now. Whether the vacuum itself works remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, the replacement battery that the warranty company sent will supposedly arrive tomorrow. Then I can see if I have two working robot cleaning slaves!
@czardmitri I don’t think so. I did some checking and I think the 690 and 890 are wifi connected. That said, if I had a wifi connected roomba, I think I could keep it from contacting the “outside world”. That is to say, with a good router, you can block it’s IP and/or MAC address from reaching the interweb. You wouldn’t be able to control it remotely, but I believe that’s what you don’t want.
@maxwrobinson LOL, it’s funny that you think I didn’t put the battery in.
The battery tested completely dead voltage wise. I am hoping that the new battery they are sending will fix the problem. It sounds like a bunch of us are having troubles.
@sammydog01@therealjrn That’s possible. I’m looking at everything again now and I see that I was most likely mistaken. I did send a note to support about the dead charging port. Such a bummer! But we ran the little guy once and he did a pretty good job getting into multiple rooms.
My 805 worked one time, but when it docked itself it got the message CHARGING ERROR 2. Contacted support, hopefully I can get this fixed because I like it, and provided good entertainment for the cats.
@maxwrobinson It did come with the battery uninstalled but I popped in in straight away. Charge Err1. Took it out and back in, no go. Wiped all the connects, still no go. Warranty service is sending a new battery, so here’s hoping.
@kpickles I was getting the charge err1 too but I assumed that the battery was just drained, so I put it on the port to charge overnight. But I like hearing they sent you a fresh battery, if mine still has the err1, I’ll do the same!
@kpickles@maxwrobinson My Roomba 655 has stopped working as well, and we have determined that it needs a replacement battery. In considering which battery to purchase, it looks like the factory model by irobot is not that great/unreliable. Does anyone have any recommendations based on experience for third party battery replacements for the Roomba 655? Thank you.
@joelwink Looks like I was wrong. I hadn’t read the fine print. My misconception was based on the image when clicking on Meh’s “Buy it on Amazon” link and the fact that I had never seen a Roomba that comes with only one virtual wall.

Good luck… anyone that gets the Devil-Roomba.
@daveinwarsh You might have gotten the Roomba agent Scully returned. You didn’t happen to eat in a sushi restaurant or ride in a driverless taxi earlier did you?
Rm9sbG93ZXJz
@daveinwarsh @kuoh problem easily solved by tipping the roomba 15%.
[I wonder how many folks will get the reference.]
@daveinwarsh @hammi99 @kuoh I’m not one of them.
@daveinwarsh, @kuoh was referring to an episode of X-Files (new season) in which Scully and Mulder were under attack by robots because they didn’t tip at a sushi restaurant due to their order getting messed up big time

@somf69 sorry, but that’s not a cat! It’s a shark! Much more fierce of a creature!!

We have a refurbed 650. They are good gizmos. I think the price is good.

What, no CAPTCHA?
I am not a robot – am I? At least, I don’t think so.
Insert obligatory “this deal sucks” here
Any insights as to the difference in suck-tech (“AeroForce” vs. “AeroVac”) which per the specs is the only difference between these two?

This isn’t a face pop
@reclaimercube You stopped rhyming fast.
@shahnm I try out new schtick all the time until I’m happy. Did I win our rap battle? I had the last comment.
@reclaimercube @shahnm deal still sucks all the more without popsockets.
@reclaimercube If it’ll make you feel better about the dearth of Meh face popsockets, then sure, you can believe you won.
@shahnm LONG LIVE THE FACE POPS
Exact same price as Groupon. Meh
@pittbk The 805 is $229 on groupon. Not including shipping.
@punkynpye they had an additional $30 off at the time I wrote it but I think it expired at 1am eastern. But yes, you’re correct—shipping is cheaper and having not purchased last night meh is now cheaper.
Make a robot that will empty the dust bin and remove all the wrapped string and I will be interested.
@hchavers The i7+ dumps its own bin out and has tangle-free rollers, but it’s $1100.
@hchavers @telepheedian The $450 e5 doesn’t dump itself, but it does have the tangle free rollers.
@hchavers @telepheedian The “tangle-free” rollers don’t get string wrapped around them as much, but the strings/hair do end up accumulating in the “pocket” on either side. You still need to clean that out once a week or two. (A huge improvement vs. every single run, but still not totally maintenance free.)
Seems like a solid upgrade to the 500 series I bought here years ago, in for the 805.
I robot, you Jane.
No wifi, no care. I have 690. I’m looking to going forward, baby, not backward!

Update: the vacuum works great with a fresh battery.
The one they shipped was dated 2015. That’s pretty wacky. Why would they do that?
My 655 works perfectly! No battery issues. Thanks Meh!!

ireally want the black one.
@mehrrychristmas Thats What She Said
@fastharry @mehrrychristmas
“That’s”

We bought our 805 (Rosie) at Costco two years ago and she does great.
This should be a solid upgrade from my 650 I bought a while back. In for the 805!
Is it factory refurbished or by a third party?
I’ll take one…if it’s in my next IRK
Are these the ones that map your house and Roomba sells the maps?
@czardmitri I don’t think so. I did some checking and I think the 690 and 890 are wifi connected. I paid around $500 for that 805 several years ago.
@Steve7654 do you still have it? enjoy it?
Just got my 805, it appears to be DOA. So sad!
@susanrm I think we all got ours without the battery in the port. Pop that bad boy in there and give it a charge.
@maxwrobinson LOL, it’s funny that you think I didn’t put the battery in.
The battery tested completely dead voltage wise. I am hoping that the new battery they are sending will fix the problem. It sounds like a bunch of us are having troubles.
My 805 charging port is dead. Also, I got a page in my box that said it was refurbished. Weren’t the 805s supposed to be new?
@ayounger Um, it doesn’t appear to be.
Have you sent in a note to support for them to answer after the weekend? (they work m-f)
@ayounger @therealjrn They used a price comparison at Amazon for a new one- maybe that’s where you saw new?
@sammydog01 @therealjrn That’s possible. I’m looking at everything again now and I see that I was most likely mistaken. I did send a note to support about the dead charging port. Such a bummer! But we ran the little guy once and he did a pretty good job getting into multiple rooms.
Mine arrived with no battery in the battery compartment . No wonder I couldn’t get it to work
@waynewalther I didn’t have a battery in mine either, good to know I’m not the only one
@qlewis31 @waynewalther mine has no battery either 805
My 805 worked one time, but when it docked itself it got the message CHARGING ERROR 2. Contacted support, hopefully I can get this fixed because I like it, and provided good entertainment for the cats.
Like several of you, mine was also DOA. Charging Error 1. Waiting on support…
@kpickles I think we all got ours without the battery in the port. Pop that bad boy in there and give it a charge.
@maxwrobinson It did come with the battery uninstalled but I popped in in straight away. Charge Err1. Took it out and back in, no go. Wiped all the connects, still no go. Warranty service is sending a new battery, so here’s hoping.

Mine only came with one virtual wall.
@joelwink Mine as well. Were we supposed to have more than one?
@joelwink Looks like I was wrong. I hadn’t read the fine print. My misconception was based on the image when clicking on Meh’s “Buy it on Amazon” link and the fact that I had never seen a Roomba that comes with only one virtual wall.
