Layers. A hoodie and a waterproof shell, or a flannel jacket if it’s not gonna rain. Or my motorcycle jacket; the liner is very warm and removable. I do have a nice bulky coat that I’ve never actually used because it’s overkill in the PNW. And a high end lighter weight snowboarding jacket that I’m currently too fat for… Being fat is a pretty good winter coat on its own.
It depends on the weather. I have 3 I regularly use. A heavy hooded shell if it’s cold and rainy, a very light hooded shell if it’s above 40 and rainy and an amazing Arcteryx jacket that is extremely lightweight but very warm and breathable. It’s actually supposed to be worn under a shell but is great all by itself. Even sheds water pretty well.
I have a runners jacket with insulation that works well over a sweater or sweatshirt. For slightly colder weather, I have a hoodie with thick “fur”. Then I have a leather jacket with thinsulate liner for 10-20 degree days. If it gets colder, I stay inside. But it rarely gets below 20 here.
I don’t know that I have a winter coat. I have a zip up hoodie thing… That I often have to take off if there is a woman in the car so I don’t die of heat stroke. Because she will demand cranking the heat and I’ll have to roll my window down. It was 7 today and I stand by that.
If I was spending lots of time outdoors that might need adjusted but would still be on the lighter side
in the closet, waiting for me in case of court, a wedding, or a funeral in winter. otherwise, i don’t wear one. i live in boston but i run very warm and usually the longest i’m outside is to and from the house/car/store/mailbox.
If I’m outside in the winter, it’s because I have to get something done. My go-to is an insulated duck cloth vest (think Carhartt, but affordable) over a Sherpa-lined hoodie. Keeps the core warm while leaving my arms free. If it’s extra-cold, I’ll also wear a union suit as a base layer.
I have a few, one is a Mountain Hardware Down alternative, but for winter camping, I have a Hybrid Columbia Ski jacket. A Fleece inside with a waterproof Shell outside. They Zip together to make a warm singe coat, and you can wear them separately if you want.
I keep thrift store coats in my closet—rainproof shell, long lined London Fog, four fur coats (only one is church-y), and two leather jackets. Like I said, they all but one came from thrift stores. And my son and brother wear short sleeves all winter. Brrrr

@Oneroundrobb “Being fat is a pretty good winter coat on its own.”
I may have that problem
Who needs a coat?!?!
@tinamarie1974
Yo, shut up/
: )
Shivering counts as exercise.
A zip-up hoodie.
@DVDBZN are you the shorts guy, or just in a warmer climate?
@simplersimon
Neither. Must be the Russian blood.
I have a light coat and a big coat, I pull the big coat out when it gets below 40ish.
I had a real nice coat, but unfortunately I shed it last week when the weather warmed up a bit.
I have a Columbia puffy jacket with the reflective Omniheat liner. It is light weight but surprisingly warm.
With all the outside dining, I picked up one with battery-powered heat!
I just want it to be cute, like something Marilyn Monroe would walk around in
I have a thin, water resistant coat for when it drops below 45 and then I have a Heavy Fur lined leather pant coat for when it drops below 0.

Larger than last winter, to encompass my new girth.
I have a nice, black peacoat. It’s quite warm, but also quite stylish.
Depending on how cold it is. In SoCal it’s pretty darn cold if it drops to the 50’s.
…Permanently retired.
