My friend once described my decorating style as modern grad school. I just want comfortable. Still mourn the loss of the most sleep-able couch ever. My husband made me get rid of it. It was gone from the curb within hours. I’m sure someone was napping on it that afternoon. The “new one” lasted half as long. Never as comfortable. I don’t care what it looks like when my eyes are closed. I’m napping!
@katbyter yes, a truly comfortable and sleep-able couch is a treasure. bonus points if it can sleep 2 but not be so deep that you can’t also sit on it.
@rtjhnstn Or the antithesis: Grandma’s silky cream colored wingback set completely covered in vinyl slipcovers? Nothing says “DO NOT sit on me!” like plastic covered furnishings.
@ruouttaurmind Ahh see but you take off the plastic when the company comes over. I had a bunch of friends when I was young whose living room looked like that (plastic covered furniture, not victorian stuff)
Anything not covered in pet hair and/or scratched to bare threads (i.e., none of the furniture in my home until my cats make their inevitable but sorrowful exit from this world).
I’ve always been attracted to Mid-Century Modern:
… but we don’t actually keep our place tidy enough to tell what kind of furniture we DO have. We decorate in mid-life mess.
Well… I just furnished a new house so… my kitchen is 50s retro. My LR is sorta modern traditional and shabby chic rustic cottage. A few antique pieces. DR is sorta farmhouse. My tastes run all over the map.
Just about my first thought on any furniture: “How hard will this be to keep clean?” I don’t like “flouncy” stuff, or fabrics that look like you shouldn’t glance at them, much less sit on them. I like clean lines on wood, not the deep-notchy stuff that would take a tiny duster and lots of time to keep clean. I’m still waiting for Amazon or Microsoft to invent some self-cleaning furniture, instead of Bluetooth-enabled and Alexa-equipped everything.
I also do not like furniture that looks like it could be lethal to someone a bit clumsy. So no glass tables or spiky metal stuff. There are many ways to die, but being done in by furniture would just be embarrassing.
Would not want:
It’s white, not very functional, and I would always have the odd sensation that it was trying to crawl up the wall to drop down on me from the ceiling. Furniture should be trustworthy and willing to stay where you put it.
It has that whole “sharp, pointy stuff” thing going on. And it is an IRON throne, so would need constant work to keep it from rusting, as well as a trunk full of bandages and antiseptic.

One answer does not fit all. Cabinets, dressers, and tables need to be antique. Couches, recliners, and beds need to be unassuming.

I prefer modern, but all my furniture was found on curbsides

As with most things, I have no vocabulary that is relevant. I guess I probably like anything that looks coherent without being ornate.
