I need to vent and I need to do it now.
22I can’t get into the Casemates website, so I’m going to give everyone here both barrels.
I ordered the hard cider from Casemates. Since I had a delivery problem last time and my wine was ruined, I ordered ice packs for this delivery.
At 1:29 pm I got a tracking notice that my order was shipped. Being a little curious as to when it would be delivered, I looked it up. It said that my order was on the FedEx truck and out for delivery.
WTF? What kind of shipping notice was that? I have to sign for this delivery, what if I wasn’t home? Yeah, I’m more than a little pissed.
So in about an hour’s time the FedEx truck arrives with my order, I sign for it and lug it into the house. Guess what? There were NO ice packs on my hard cider. Geez, temps close to 100 degrees won’t hurt it. Right? Yeah, right. Maybe not as bad as with my wine. But, golly gee, I paid for these to be surrounded by ice packs.
I’m steamed. I need some ice packs for myself.

Damn @Barney. That’s something to be reasonably pissed about.
If you haven’t written in yet, you know the drill. I’ll look for your case and see what we can do.
(We’re working on Casemates getting back up, btw.)
@Thumperchick Thanks. I just sent in my complaint. I even cleaned up my language, but only a little bit.
This is so frustrating.
@Barney @Thumperchick so you used the blind rage option then?
@RiotDemon @Thumperchick I haven’t received any kind of reply. I think they offer me that in the next step? I still have a lot left in me, so yeah, blind rage is the option I’m gonna take.
@Barney @RiotDemon friggin’ TC. Taking her sweet ass time replying. Whatta jerkface.
Casemates support takes a bit longer overall, due to the many moving parts it takes to make wine happen on the cheap.
Got your response. Thanks. Am holding off on my blind rage.
@Barney @RiotDemon @Thumperchick
As opposed to meh, which makes whine happen on the cheap regularly
@Barney Sorry Barney. the cider was an unusual offer in that it was sourced and fulfilled by the producer (in this case Michigan). We gave instructions on how to fulfill correctly, but it looks like they omitted the freeze packs. Apologies! FWIW, Cider is apparently less susceptible heat conditions than wine. In any event, check in with support and we’ll take care of you.
Casemates is back up if you need to redirect your blind rage. but we’ll do better!
@Winedavid49 Thank you. I guess I’ve just had a couple of bad orders. It happens, I guess. Anyway, I’ve written to Customer Service and @Thumperchick has already written me a response.
@Barney sorry to hear about your troubles, but thank you for mentioning they sell hard cider. I don’t drink wine, but I might mosey over for some cider!
P.S… they don’t ship to us
@Barney @mikibell ditto here in Ala-dam-a
@Barney @mikibell
In fact, I lost an entire case of champagne shipped from France by a relative (for our 40th anniversary) due to the fact you can’t ship into the state direct to consumer. What a bunch of asshats!
Er… you could move to a friendlier state…
So, how did this all end? Well, it ended today. Casemates had offered to send me more cider from the winery – they were in some kind of negotiations with them and had told me it might take a little time. I said that was okay, because this week I was doing some medical stuff and wouldn’t be around much if it did ship.
However, today I decided that it would just be best and less of a hassle overall to make Casemates a settlement offer for the cider. (The boxes of cider, HUGE boxes, are still sitting stacked up in the middle of my living room and are making a very good conversation piece.)
So, I made them an offer asking them to refund the $10 that I had paid for freezer packs, that I did not get, and I would call us even. Thumperchick, who was heading the negotiations for Casemates, countered that they would refund ALL of my money and that the cider could continue to sit in my living room for as long as I wanted it to.
I didn’t even get to make a counter offer. She had already made the credit to my account when she wrote me back. What kind of a fucked up company is this that does nice things like this for their customers?
Thank you, TC and Casemates. This year I’ll be sending out Christmas Cards with a picture of the boxes painted green and decorated.
@Barney
/giphy Yay!
@Barney You have to watch that TC. She has been like that for years.
Are you going to crack one open and test it? It is only 140 days until Christmas if you plan to save it for the holidays
@speediedelivery Unfortunately, I won’t be able to taste it (drats), I’ve been put on some new meds that seem to have some adverse effects with alcohol.
I’m really not sure what I’m going to do with it yet. However, I am going to have to move the boxes out of the way, if and when I ever decide to clean.
@Barney
@heartny lol, you are so right.
@Barney @speediedelivery
I think it will make for fantastic fruit fly traps.
@Barney I love a happy ending!
(I was going to giphy that, but then thought better of it )
@Barney @PooltoyWolf chicken!
/giphy Happy Ending
@Barney @tinamarie1974 Yours went better than mine would have.
@Barney @PooltoyWolf actually I cycled through like five of them and they were all pg
@Barney @tinamarie1974 Good to know!
Why do bad things happen to nice people?
@medz maybe @Barney is evil inside and we just don’t know yet?
@medz @RiotDemon I think it’s karma from my past lives, although I still have quite a bit of evil oozing inside of me in this life.
@Barney @medz @RiotDemon It’s because that loveable dino was super nice to my @puppycat. Karma had to tell her to knock that off.
@PuppyCat @Thumperchick Aww… It was my pleasure.
@RiotDemon
/8ball is posting Baby Shark evil?
Cannot predict now
@narfcake Hmm…
@Barney @narfcake YES!
Baby shark is the theme song playing in hell.
@Barney @narfcake @RiotDemon Anyone watch The Walking Dead? Remember when Daryl was imprisoned and they played the song Easy Street nonstop to torture him? If Baby Shark had existed in that world, it would have been a no brainer.
@Barney @cinoclav @narfcake @RiotDemon
Did someone say Baby Shark?
The humbly presents for your listening pleasure:
The 10-hour Baby Shark Trap Music Remix
@mike808 You know, I kinda like this.
@Barney @cinoclav @narfcake @RiotDemon He would have broken in an hour or two. I love my grandkids but there’s only so many times I can hear it before going completely insane. But let’s not tell Negan he had the wrong song. We don’t need him adding it to his torture package.
Man, that blows hardcore. Few things are worse than hot wine…hopefully the cider can be salvaged. I’m soft and inflatable so feel free to use me as a punching bag to vent some stress…just no spiked knuckles!!
@PooltoyWolf Not necessarily. Glühwein is big in Europe. It’s hot, mulled wine with spices added and is absolutely perfect when ‘relaxing’ outside on the slopes.
@cinoclav Huh, that’s certainly different. TIL
@cinoclav @PooltoyWolf Nah, normal in Europe. I had a warm port with cloves in Dublin one evening. Was not feeling well and the bartender fixed a little something something to fix me up. Ended up knocking me out. Passed out at the table.
@PooltoyWolf @tinamarie1974 Btw, if you want to get a better idea of what partying on the slopes in Val d’Isère, France looks like… I took this in January. Most insane après I’ve ever had the pleasure of partaking in.
@cinoclav @PooltoyWolf @tinamarie1974 Truthfully, I think mulled wine is common in a lot of cold places. Mulled cider is also tasty. Maybe I’ll remember to post the recipes for both later this evening. Best thing about mulled cider is that it is just as good with non-alcoholic cider (only done with apple cider, far as I know).
Now I want this, and it’s far too hot this time of year to be a pleasant drink. Not the image I expected, but it’s still pretty.
/image mulled cider
@cinoclav @Shrdlu @tinamarie1974 ‘non-alcoholic’
You have my attention.
@cinoclav @PooltoyWolf looks fun!
@cinoclav @PooltoyWolf @tinamarie1974 I know I said I’d return with a recipe or two, but life has intervened. On the other hand, I found a recipe that’s exactly what I would have posted, and here’s the link (yes, non-alcoholic):
https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/mulled-cider-recipe-1943275
@cinoclav @PooltoyWolf @Shrdlu @tinamarie1974 I was thinking of wassail. I love good warm cider.
@cinoclav @Shrdlu @tinamarie1974 Looks tasty!
Hey OP, if you don’t want your hot cider, I’ll take it off your hands.
@ShotgunX I’m waiting to see what Casemates decides to do with it. I’m hoping that they send FedEx out to pick it up. I really don’t want to mess with it. It’s heavy.
Truth be told, I’m pretty tired of the whole thing right now.
I should check out Casemates more often. I might have had to try the cider. I am not much of a wino but cider sounds good right now.
Should be ok to order now that @Barney has straightened them out.
@speediedelivery I took a quick look at it since I like cider. It was $99.99 for a case of 24 22oz bottles. It was a good price for that particular cider but not a good enough price when there are plenty of others I can go pick up in person for less. The place I go to is currently showing 92 different ciders available for pickup today.
@cinoclav @speediedelivery Whoa… I’m not sure you can find 92 different ciders in the entire state (friggin’ state monopoly on alcohol wholesale)
@speediedelivery No problem, just follow me. It’s safe now.
@chienfou @speediedelivery PA doesn’t make it much easier. Fortunately I can detour through Delaware on my way home from work and go here: https://www.totalwine.com/store-info/delaware-claymont/101
A quick search shows availability as:
8231 wines
2729 beers
4098 spirits
It’s almost a shame that I barely drink.
@Barney @speediedelivery wow… really … a hundred years… it seems like only 45 or so…
@chienfou @cinoclav Opposite end of Pa here. I see 31 ciders listed on the state store website. I have not tried enough to know what is good or what I like. I usually end up drinking schnapps instead of trying something different. I don’t drink often but I do like a nip now and then.
@chienfou @cinoclav @speediedelivery state store? The state has liquor stores?
@Barney Ummm. I thought it was dusty and windy out your way. I am a sinker not a swimmer.
@speediedelivery We try to keep all the good thing about Kansas a state secret.
@chienfou @cinoclav @speediedelivery The Total Wine store up the street shows 179 ciders. I should really go sometime.
@chienfou @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 You can only buy liquor through ‘state stores’ run by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. That used to include wine but in the last few years they’ve opened up wine sales to licensed retailers, primarily grocery stores. Beer had mostly been sold by the case, specifically in beer distributors or in bars where you were limited to buying two six packs per person (or trip in and out). That too has been added to the same places where wine is sold. The current Governor has done quite a bit to relax the antiquated laws.
@chienfou @cinoclav @speediedelivery that is CRAZY!
@chienfou @cinoclav @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Virginia also owns the liquor stores. Grocery and convenience stores can sell wine and beer.
@chienfou @cinoclav @sammydog01 @speediedelivery Wisconsin has some odd rules too about where you can purchase, in addition to how late at night you can purchase. I had friends visit from Milwaukee once and the husband was so excited that he could purchase liquor after midnight. His mind was blown lol
@chienfou @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 There’s actually one advantage to the state run stores. Pennsylvania is one of the largest buyers of wine and liquor and often has better prices than the surrounding states because of the volume discounts.
@Barney @chienfou @speediedelivery I thought the same at first, but it appears the anniversary shown is for Universal Studios as a whole, rather than JAWS as a film.
@tinamarie1974 Moved up to Milwaukee from New Orleans and the whole ABC store thing was just disappointment. They freaked out when I asked for a go cup leaving a bar and could not fathom the concept. They have relaxed the beer only at ABC or carry out at a bar (1 6pk limit) since, and after midnight, everyone went to “after parties” when the bars shut down. Another quaint concept, as a New Orleanian used to Happy Hour 5-7 twice a day and staying out all night to greet the construction crews grabbing an Irish Coffee on the way to work. Well, it was the French Quarter in the 80s, and they certainly looked like construction workers at 5:30am with the sun coming up…
Although Houston got it right by stopping package liquor sales at midnight and then the bars stop serving alcohol at 1am — not close, just stop serving alcohol. So by the time you bail on the bar/club, there’s no place to grab more drinks on the way home. And by staying open with music/band/DJs and serving non-alcohol beverages, they weren’t kicking all the drunks out of the bars at the same time to drive home.
@chienfou @cinoclav @speediedelivery good point, and as long as the discount is passed along it is not a bad deal.
@chienfou @cinoclav @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Yes, but they’ve become progressive enough to allow you to buy wine at the grocery store. Odd thing is the Giant near my Dad’s place in PA only allows you to check out at one specific register next to the wine aisle.
“Spirits are to be sold only in the state owned Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores, which also sell wine, but not beer…”
Plus, more alcohol weirdness: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_laws_of_Pennsylvania
@chienfou @LaVikinga @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Yep, I mentioned the grocery stores above. I think the reason for the separate registers is for both sales tracking and easier age verification. They obviously don’t want to give minors the option of going through a self-checkout lane. Either way, it actually makes it easier in my opinion. No waiting behind someone in the express lane with 27 items.
I considered the ice packs but opted out of them (cheap bastard, plus shit gets delivered to my job where it is stored in a fairly cool basement).
The cider was delivered (to work) yesterday and I brought it home today, though I’ve not yet had a chance to try it.
@Winedavid49, I will state that I got the “Delivered” email at 10:39 AM (on 7/31), about four hours before I got the “Shipped” email (at 2:29PM), so there were definitely some temporal distortions in and around Michigan.
