Seems like a hundred other people have done similar things on the internet but I shifted the pitch -25% and +25% and you can hear either one easily. Last night I was hearing Yerry, and today I only hear Laurel.
Same here- I heard something like Yerry from my crappy laptop speaker. Then I switched to less crappy headphones and leard laurel. Now laurel is all I hear on my crappy laptop speaker. My brain changed how it heard it. Weird.
@medz lol it’s my wife’s Buick. I think it has the Bose option though. Gone are the days of a wall of speakers, though back in high school I had a hardtop Suzuki Samurai with two JL Audio 18’s instead of a back seat. That thing was stupid loud.
Currently running in the trunk of this one are three bags of wood pellets in flavors that they don’t stock back home, some tennis rackets and a dog blanket. Unsure what they do for the yanny/Laurel bass boost.
@djslack I suppose the bags of wood pellets might provide some sound dampening…
I wasn’t allowed (wife’s rule) to upgrade my system until I surpassed the warranty period for the car. By that time I, too, was too old to be investing in a big system. I currently have a 12" Infinity sub in a sealed box with a refurb sony amp I got from woot. The sub was mine from 2 systems ago and I got it back from my brother who had it in a car that broke down. I also have a touch-screen receiver that was made to fit my car that I also got from woot. That turned out to be more fun that I had expected because I added a backup camera, steering wheel controls module, and a chime module that allowed the radio to continue playing after the car was turned off and key removed, but before the door was opened. (like the factory system)
I’ve had the car over 10 years now and it’s my turn to buy a new one. I probably won’t ever put a true system in my next ride…
@medz I know the feeling. I have pretty much an entire system that I bought for my car 2 cars ago. I’m sure it’s all obsolete today but maybe one day I’ll put it in something.
@djslack@medz Vehicle integration has made it harder and harder these days for aftermarket – and HVAC controls on the head unit pretty much means forget replacing that.
When I first heard it (playing over wife’s cell phone speaker), I heard yanny. Now I can hear either depending on what I want to hear.
Edit: This is the best one I’ve seen for demonstration and explanation.
@djslack Ya, that original sample was twisted more ways than Lombard Street to even start to sound like anything other. I can’t even make myself hear yanny in that.
Via a friend who posted it, this recording of it lets you play with the intonation to see how it changes and has a depiction of the vocals above the audio (Scroll down a bit on the page).
Laurel on a bunch of online examples including the reddit one, except when I listened to the explanation video earlier in this thread then it was Yanny.
Dunno, but if you play it backwards it says “Paul is dead”.

Honestly, who cares? I have better things to do.
@capguncowboy
/giphy grumpy
@capguncowboy Commenting that you have better things to do is a better thing to do?

@Moose Nicely done, I can now hear laurel.
Sooo, have you found your dremel? We could take up a collection and buy you a new one.
@Moose So did we win the internet?
@Moose wtf, that is the same recording?
@Barney @Moose I have a new one I can GIVE him (for postage that is) if that is what it takes.
Same here- I heard something like Yerry from my crappy laptop speaker. Then I switched to less crappy headphones and leard laurel. Now laurel is all I hear on my crappy laptop speaker. My brain changed how it heard it. Weird.
@heartny haha
@heartny
Black lettering on a grey-ish/beige-ish background.
This is the best one I listened to earlier.
It slowly changes. At the end most people supposedly only hear Laurel, I hear both.
@RiotDemon dilly, yannie, laurel
@RiotDemon @Seeds Jelly!
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 @Seeds Lawno!
@RiotDemon @Seeds Yannie comes in around 0:52, then Laurel around 1:04. Scrolling backwards it’s a bit different because of your anchor point.
I hear both superimposed, yanny in the highs and Laurel in the lows. Holding my phone further away, yanny dominates the sound.
They played this on the radio while I was in the car. With all the extra bass the car has compared to my phone, all I heard was Laurel.
@djslack What you runnin’ in that trunk?
@medz lol it’s my wife’s Buick. I think it has the Bose option though. Gone are the days of a wall of speakers, though back in high school I had a hardtop Suzuki Samurai with two JL Audio 18’s instead of a back seat. That thing was stupid loud.

@djslack @medz I think the dog blanket would be appreciated by the woofers.
Yanny. Every time.
However, @moose has something interesting on this he may share later.
@Thumperchick
@Moose needs to get busy on those Goat trophies.
@Barney @Moose
/8ball Will goat trophies be a thing?
My sources say no
@Barney @Moose @Thumperchick Umm how many edits did it take to say “no”? LOL
I’m hearing yanny.
yanny
@Seeds Drunk or sober?
@Barney soberish, i’ll listen again now drunk and let you know.
@Barney still only yannie, even trying to hear laurel.
When I first heard it (playing over wife’s cell phone speaker), I heard yanny. Now I can hear either depending on what I want to hear.

Here’s the original source, a bit cleaner than what’s going around.
@djslack in that one I clearly hear Laurel. I’d be interested to see the sound/studio guy from @medz’ video posted above dissect this source.
@djslack Ya, that original sample was twisted more ways than Lombard Street to even start to sound like anything other. I can’t even make myself hear yanny in that.
In my heightened state, understanding the interconnectivity of all things, I hear the sound of one hand clapping.
Laurel
Yaurel.

Commenting a little late, but… Both. Just like that stupid dress. I could see it both ways and I can hear this both ways.
Laurel and only Laurel.
This isn’t like the dress where I could see either depending on where I looked, I can only hear one.
@MrMark As it’s playing, say yanny to yourself in your head. Pronounced like van-eee.
Only Yanny
Yanny. Actually, Yammy. I was going to post this earlier but I couldn’t find a short clip with the undoctored sound file.
Laurel on a bunch of online examples including the reddit one, except when I listened to the explanation video earlier in this thread then it was Yanny.
Yerry
Definitively laurel.
