How was your weekend?
16So there I was with a cart full of groceries to check out. Time comes to pay and I ran the card three times before I had to give up and stand there like a fool knowing the account had money and then I had to just leave the cart there and drive home. Turns out my card was on hold (now canceled) thanks to a withdrawal of money in Virginia and someone tried to buy concert tickets.
So that was fun. How was your weekend?

As the proud owner of a 6 year old grand niece I had to go watch a bunch of kids dance poorly.
I managed to snag a Bissell crosswave $269 new for $20.
I’ve been scrubbing my floors.
Weather has been in the low 70s and 60s so I’ve had my back sliding door open. Feels great.
Thinking about a nap and then taking my dog out for a ride.
@RiotDemon took my dog out yesterday to one of the causeways. Last time I was there, there was a sandy shoreline that she could run along. Unfortunately the mangrove plants have taken it over. We still walked around a bit and enjoyed the weather.
Here she is along the one bank. No, her collar isn’t tight, she just gets neck rolls depending on how she lays. And no, she’s not fat either.
Drove home during the sunset. I’m on the wrong coast for sunsets, but they still look nice.
@RiotDemon Aww
@RiotDemon I’m so jealous of your vacuum deal!
@moonhat the stars definitely aligned for me. I’ve been really happy with it. If I would of paid $269, I would of been annoyed because it sucks at cleaning the edges but for $20 I’ll let it slide.
Hah! Feeling inspired after walking the dog, I decided to make a quick run to the supermarket, so I hopped in the car, pulled out of the driveway without a sign of the dawdling idiots who always seem to be drifting down the avenue blocking the exit, slid through the intersections with no delay from the line of traffic that usually waits in ambush to prevent me from making turns, and even got the traffic light timed correctly - so I slid into a parking space that JUST OPENED UP in front of the market and I had JUST grabbed a shopping cart and clicked the clicker’s locking button when I realized my wallet was in my work pants.
So it could have been worse - thanks for the perspective, @Targaryen!
@aetris I’ve definitely done that before.
I got three loads of laundry washed and dried, though it remains to be folded/hung (I’ll have to tumble some of the stuff to get wrinkles out so meh). Still have a load of towels to do, plus the folding (mostly t-shirts) and hanging (the other shirts).
Did some cooking… made a large batch of roasted butternut squash, potatoes and onions on Saturday and salmon croquettes for dinner on Sunday. (Nothing really fancy, but I’ve been rather busy recently and not taking the time to cook. It was quite enjoyable to spend time in the kitchen and reminded me that I should make more of an effort to spend time cooking.)
I was also able to get a lot of sleep (almost 19 hours Friday and Saturday evening), which I really needed as sleeping is how I fight off a bad cold. (I picked up a cold on Tuesday morningish and due to work and other obligations was unable to get more than 3-4 hours a night on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.)
Re: your problem, @Targaryen, might I suggest that you always carry at least two credit cards. This has saved me on more than one occasion, albeit only once from a locked down card (was when I was trying to buy a new cell phone to replace the one that had died earlier that Friday… needless to say, the texts and calls to my (dead and not yet replaced) phone to verify the new phone’s purchase went unanswered…)
@baqui63 - cash can also be useful sometimes. But after watching that Frank Abagnale video I no longer carry my ATM card!
@baqui63 Hope you feel better!
@aetris I rarely use cash for purchases over about $10 unless doing so gets me a discount. I almost never use a debit card, primarily because of the lack of protections vs a credit card, but also because I like being able to put off paying for things for 3-4 weeks and the cash back or other rewards can be a good thing.
@Targaryen Thanks. I am feeling better (got another good night of sleep last night) but the cold seems to have settled in my sinuses which means I’m probably going to have to go see my doctor for some drugs to knock it down.
@baqui63 - Oh absolutely, and if you’re paying cash you’re actually covering someone ELSE’s card rewards. Nevertheless, it’s a good thing to have for those little emergencies… Like splitting a check.
@aetris True, tho I dgaf if someone else benefits from a choice that benefits me.
While I generally avoid paying cash, I try to carry at least $35. This is down from the $100+ I normally carried decades ago.
It is perhaps interesting that most of my cash transactions involve my car: cash discounts for gasoline and car repairs.
Just my opinion, @Targaryen, your weekend experience does not sound like fun. It actually sounds like the opposite of fun. To each their own but I hope you don’t have an experience like that again.
@elimanningface Yeah mildly, I’d prefer if my card worked and I didn’t stand there like an idiot heh.
I went to a service meeting up on Grand Lake this weekend. If I had known I was going to have to present for show-and-tell I would have taken pictures of the water.
Worked 1500 to 2300 each day… But no surprise overtime so it’s all good. I’m off the next 7 days
/giphy whoo hoo
@chienfou me too!! I don’t know about you, but I am pretty excited!!
@tinamarie1974 same here. Headed for a week on the “Forgotten Coast”. T-giving with my Mom, Daughter/SIL and g-kids (2), and SWMBO .
Bad day at the beach is still better than a good day at work!
@chienfou that sounds wonderful. I hope you enjoy your well deserved time!
I have nothing so exciting planned. Putting up christmas decorations, possibly going to the movies, booked a massage and I have two Thanksgiving dinners (Th and Su), not to mention BF shopping.
@tinamarie1974 So you are sticking around STL?Hope the weather is great for you. We are looking at lows in the 60s and highs in the mid 70s. Great strolling weather, or if the alcohol holds out maybe some swimming!
@chienfou yeah my whole family (and it is a big one) lives locally with only one or two exceptions. Last I checked I was looking “forward” to rain and possibly wet snow for turkey day…yuck. hope your weather holds out!
@tinamarie1974 we have possible rain on Wed. Friday we will go in to Apalachicola to watch Santa come in on a shrimp boat and do some small business shopping. No big box stores in town.
Headed home Sat. which is also the Iron Bowl so virtually a local holiday. NOBODY on the streets during the game. Yippee! I have often said I think if Gramma dies on the sofa during the game they wouldn’t bring her into the ER until after the final whistle blows…
Have a fun time with the Fam.
@chienfou @tinamarie1974
Is this a not-so subtle attempt to reinforce Alabama stereotypes?
@Limewater @tinamarie1974 call me dense but I don’t get it…
@chienfou @tinamarie1974 Your daughter is also your sister-in-law.
@Limewater @tinamarie1974 oh. That totally escaped me since i mean son in law… Duh.
Reminds me of the old " if you marry in Montgomery and get divorced in Birmingham… are you still cousins?"
I went to Aquatica, SeaWorld’s water park, with my mom, my younger brother, an ex-boyfriend I’m still good friends with, and my inflatable Lassie swim ring from 1959. It was a fun day and the weather was perfect. (All of their pools and slides are heated!) Due to the time of year, the park was also almost empty, so there were no lines at all!
@PooltoyWolf Nice. I love water parks. Hope our weather holds out this week on the Gulf.
@chienfou I’m rooting for you!
@PooltoyWolf super cute!
I didn’t know Aquatica had heated slides! How did you like it? I’ve never been there. My universal pass is giving me a discount to go to volcano Bay but I’ve never been there either.
@RiotDemon Awww you’re making me blush! Thanks uwu
It was fun! The slides and rivers were exciting, maybe not quite the variety that Wet n’ Wild had but still thrilling. The drop slide, Ihu’s Breakaway Falls, took a massive amount of mental preparation LOL. I have never been to Volcano Bay but hope to go soon…I have only heard good things about it.
@PooltoyWolf drop slide? Hell no! That’s one thing I cannot do.
@RiotDemon I almost didn’t do it, but I’m glad I did!
@PooltoyWolf @RiotDemon ok guys. What is a drop slide?
@RiotDemon @tinamarie1974 It’s a very steep water slide that starts with you standing on a trap door, that opens and drops you onto the slide. Most give you a countdown, but some do not! ‘The Bomb Bay’ at Wet n’ Wild was a famous drop slide for quite some time.
@PooltoyWolf @RiotDemon oMG! That would not be happening. You are wwaayyyy braver than me!
@RiotDemon @tinamarie1974 Yeah, it takes a special level of courage lol
@PooltoyWolf @RiotDemon @tinamarie1974 After watching that video I am going to guess that the line to ride the drop slide was about 93% female.
@PooltoyWolf How was Lassie stored that she’s still functional after fifty years?
@Limewater @RiotDemon @tinamarie1974 I did notice that video had a high percentage of female riders, though it was a pretty even split when I was there.
@Limewater Lassie has actually had a pretty rough past. At some point before the guy who sold her to me had her, she became covered in some sort of black paint or ink-like substance…her most recent previous owner was able to get most of it off, and I finished the job. I also needed to repair a one-inch cut through her top and bottom…but now she looks great! The vinyl has stood the test of time extremely well; she’s still soft and squishy. (She also squeaks when you squeeze her muzzle!)
My weekend was too short
We hosted thanksgiving Saturday and there was only one fight between the 9 and 10 year olds and everyone seemed to have a good time and almost no one threw up. (Small dog over ate, I think)
Then Sunday was both productive and relaxing!
Over all, a wonderful weekend!
I drove over to OKC for an administrative meeting. It’s a pretty boring straight drive. But since we recently raised the speed limits on the turnpike to 75, (most) everybody goes 80 or 85.
The meeting was OK, during the commentary portion on one of the motions some of the group got pretty far “into the weeds” as they say, but it wasn’t too bad. Everybody was heard and their viewpoints were made known, which is important too.
The way back to Tulsa was more exciting as traffic was going 85 or 90. (95 MPH to pass the slowpokes only going 85, ha) I only did that a couple of times though.
There were a couple of idiots that fought to get in front of my big Mercury, then slowed down to 75 once they were in front of me. I moved over into the left lane to pass, then they woke up in the right lane and sped up to 85. Very weird. I never tailgate or make crazy lane changes so these were more of slow-motion dramas.
One guy with Kansas plates–I left him in front of me so I could keep an eye one him–was drifting all over his lane and there were people moving all around in his sedan. It just didn’t look very safe to try to pass him. But he was one of the 90 MPH people so it was easy enough to let him blaze on in front of me. I passed him at the Tulsa city limits when he was trapped behind a big truck going 65. He looked all sweaty and miserable. Poor guy was probably having a rough trip and hours to go for him yet.
About an hour or so in, traffic was getting too weird for me and a big pair of trucks was blocking everybody from getting around them. So I just dropped back and set the cruise control to 80.
Found me a cool blues show to listen to on the radio and made it home safely to Mr. Whiskers.

Somewhere there’s somebody writing about a driver in a big-ass Mercury that didn’t want anybody in front of him–I just know it. : )
@therealjrn - I almost hate to say this, but the speed limit is 55 mph on the extension I take to work and the only places people are driving under 75 is in the posted-45-mph work zone.
And when I say they’re under 75 mph, I mean around 65.
@aetris They’ve made a big push here in Oklahoma about enforcing the speed limits in work zones. Unfortunately we had a couple of fatal worker-involved accidents first. Very high visibility of patrol cars and frequently I see people pulled over after a work zone. Lots of big signs and warnings.
I’m a big believer in the 45 or 55 mph limits in work zones because of the lane changes and those terrifying jersey barriers two inches from the lane’s edge. I don’t know how those big semis make it through those.
@aetris @therealjrn when i moved from seattle to chicago, i drove a 26ft uhaul, whose alignment was completely fucked, through a lot of work zones. i have a whole new appreciation of semi drivers and their ability to stay in lanes.
Lost a lot of golf matches on Golf Blitz, lost a few bills at a poker game, washed some clothes, and lost some more golf… Really starting to hate golf…
My kids got sick (mostly stomach flu), so it was no fun.
@targaryen I saw this story in the local paper and immediately thought of your weekend.

And I had a similar thing happen a couple weeks ago at the store: had the toddler, the reusable grocery sacks, the list from the fridge and a cart full of food. Just… no wallet. I was able to borrow cash from a neighbor to finish up the transaction and pay her back. And I put a backup credit card in my vehicle to prevent THAT from happening again! smh
