When they are on sale (no, meh doesn’t qualify).
The last towels we bought was at a large chain department store. My wife was looking for something and I wandered over to the towels. I discovered someone had mispriced some nice bath sheets at $8.00. I think normally like $48. I checked with the lady and she said that tag came from corporate but it was an error. However since that was the marked price she agreed to sell them to us. We were nice and only went home with 6.
Yes, I know. Not a sale. But a bargain!
I have had acquaintances who obviously allowed Marrott, Hilton, Hyatt, Wyndham and a couple of other large hospitality chains do their towel shopping for them. I think our most recent towels came from Meh or Side Deal, but others have been sourced variously elsewhere for ephemeral reasons. I still keep my tie-dye underlay towels around, for one thing.
When I had a crisis burn through the old ones. 4 loads of towels a day, with bleach, ate through every towel but the ones I kept for me. Ended up needing a new washer, too.
Every 20 years or so. I like to keep things fresh.
When the lint in my dryer filter matches the color of the towels I can’t seem to find.
When the old ones get brittle enough that they start snapping in half.
@brennyn have you tried washing them?
@brennyn A little vinegar in the wash load can help remove the mineral build-up and restore some of the softness - if they ever had any.
Since I seem to have a ton of t-shirts, I just use those.
What year is it again?

When they start looking old or when I change the bathroom color/theme.
And once I replaced them all when they were used during a sewage backup.

When their usability as a blind-fold ends and they are transitioned to outdoor rags.
when I can watch television through the towel because it is that thin…

When we’ve misplaced enough towels that seeing them in the store reminds me to buy more.
