The fuck do I care how many steps I take? I walk, I hike, I stroll, I glide, I step the fuck around my life without wristing the number of feetses taken forward towards some fetishistic numerative self-pleasuring bullshit. The fucking hell is this step-counting circlejerk crap?!! Y'all better get the FUCK off my lawn and go ahead and NOT count as you do it!! Uuugh...
@awk The fuck do I care how many gallons I drink? I sip, I gulp, I quaff, I swallow, I swig the fuck down my liquid intake without voluming the number of gallonses taken towards some fetishistic numerative self-measuring bullshit. The fucking hell is this gallon-counting circlejerk crap? Y'all better get the fuck outta my pond and NOT measure the volume displaced as you do it!! Ugh...
@goldenthorn Love the attitude. Can i make it work for me? Let's see:
Get the fuck outta my chair. Quit fucking talking, aka making "personal noise". Quit using my shitty megabandwidth, there's not enuf for 2 and you don't gef any. Get your slimy filthy hands off my headphones. Touch that remote and you fucking die. Wake me up early and you'll have fewer bastard body parts. Wtf do i care that you exist? Quit bothering my sedentary life, asshole. Yes, i consumed enuf liquid crappy caffiene to hydrate the known fucking galaxy. Yes i have enuf pillows. Yes, the a/c is fine.
I know that useless health factoid (any factoid) already. I don't care. Fuck you. Now stfu and go away.
I don't care what anyone says, I love my Fitbit. As competitive as I am, it gets my butt off the couch even more than my dogs do. I know they are not for everyone but it works for me. I get, right now, 5000-6000 during the week and 10,000 and up on weekend days.
@mehbee Awesome! I have been using a Misfit Shine for a year and it really helps. I still get excited when the lights all flash. Yesterday my Speedo Misfit arrived so I can track laps in the pool. I swim for about 45 minutes so I'm guessing maybe 8 laps? This is how I look in the pool. http://www.visitmanateelagoon.com/manatee-cam/
@sammydog01 I doubt very seriously that's what you look like when you swim but it mad me laugh. I'm going to look for one of those to wear once my husband gets my pool set up. We live near a quarry so we have to have an above ground, but it's a 24x16 so I can swim laps. I would love to be able to track it.
Who decided that 10,000 should be the recommended number of steps? That seems like too big and round of a number to be anything but an arbitrary recommendation. Like someone sat there and said, "1,000 is too low, better bump it up another order of magnitude. 10,000? Yeah, that sounds like plenty. I'm an expert!"
@jqubed They probably counted how many steps "average" people take in a day, came up with something like 7000 and rounded up so it would seem like an easily attainable goal that would encourage people to buy these Exciting New Products.
I have the Google Fit app, which runs in the background of my phone; it gives me everything a fitbit can except track my sleeping habits (if only I could actually get sleep).
My watch decided my daily goal was 3,525 steps after watching my average for a couple weeks and adding 5% to make the goal "attainable". Well, it hasn't been attained in a long time and 10,000 is in haha-are-you-crazy territory.
I don't have a clue how many steps I take, but I do take a 3 mile walk every day. That is nowhere near 10,000 steps, probably a little over a half. In that regards, 10,000 sounds like a pretty lofty figure.
Did we start measuring steps merely because we can? Or was steps always a better measurement than distance, but until recently there wasn't an easy way to measure it?
@DrWorm Your questions set off the calculator part of my brain. As for how many steps, it depends on the length of your steps. According to Healthy Living"On average, a man's walking stride length is 2.5 feet, or 30 inches, according to Arizona State University Extension. A woman's average stride length is 2.2 feet, or 26.4 inches, reports the school." 3 Miles is 190,080 inches, so on average a man takes 6336 steps on a 3 mile walk while a woman will take 7200 steps. Or you can calculate steps from your height to get a more accurate measurement, though it is possible to lengthen or shorten your stride.
And doesn't speed count for anything? I certainly use more energy running three miles than I do walking them.
My best guess: We count steps because companies can sell gadgets that count steps.
@rockblossom Some of the better devices/watches (Garmin, Polar, Suunto, etc) can do distance thru GPS, if you are outside.
These devices have problems with a lot of small distance and direction changes (soccer, tennis), but can still be useful. If you are indoors, unless your location has some kinda crazy badge-tracking system (aka Amazon warehouses), steps is what can be counted.
On a normal workday, my tracker gives me credit for around 9000 steps. On days where I play a substantial amount of Ultimate (Frisbee), I can easily hit 15000 or more
I start on step one of twelve at around 9 every morning.
Then I have a drink at lunch.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
@Pavlov You're so full of shit.
You can't make it past 9:30.
@Pavlov

@goldenthorn Great. Fucking. Answer.
(Also doing my fucking part in upping the fuck count.)
@goldenthorn Yeah but do you drink 64 gallons of water per day like you're supposed to?

My corporate wellness program pays me to get more than 10,000 a day. So I try to hit that because more money means more meh.

@mehbee
@mfladd Would it hurt your rep if I said you were sweet?
@mehbee shhhhh..just don't say it out loud
@mfladd Deal!

@mfladd
Oh, now, stop being sweet or we'll think less of you.
@f00l I refuse to respond on the grounds it may incriminate me.

@beboptango I'm not surprised; it's like that "drink 8 glasses of water a day" myth.

I wore a fitness tracker one day at work. I hit 10,000 steps by 1pm. Took it off and never put it back on again.

My fitbit goal is 8000. I usually get close ish.
