@callow Put a pocket in some for a filter and use round elastic (I have found the flat elastic bothers my ears but my glasses might be part of the problem with that) and I might buy.
@Kidsandliz Initially I made them with the pocket but no one added filters and the fabric started to fray inside after a few washings so I stopped.
I spent $200 on elastic, I’m not buying more. Knit elastic is more comfortable than braided. Some have elastic around the head and I have a few 3D printed ear savers.
I wasn’t trying to sell them. Really!
@callow Well considering what people want/need you should. If you finished the seam on the divider for the pocket then it wouldn’t fray. Also that farbic anti fray “glue” might work. Of course doing either costs more money and takes more time. If we are going to buy them anyway might as well have a fellow meh person benefit from our purchase.
As far as filters it may be that people didn’t konw where to get them or what to make them out of. Toolbox and Zep industrial blue shop rags have about the same filtration as surgical masks. People can cut their own and that stuff is cheap. A Toolbox roll is about $3 and the Zep box is about $5.
@Kidsandliz People do not want/need them enough to pay me for my time. I have a full time business making custom window treatments and soft furnishings, a home and family to care for, and an elderly relative to shop for and help out. I spent enough weekends sewing well made masks for those who need them and am probably still didn’t make back the money I spent on materials.
@callow Looking at prices on etsy vs the big box stores it is clear you can’t make any money since there is no way to compete with China as an individual. Too bad.
PSA - for those of you that don’t think wearing masks works. Please stop being goofy and wear one. We’re doing it in the Northeast and “miraculously” we haven’t died from CO2 intake.
We just prepped “welcome boxes” for the new students at our university, since the majority will be attending classes from home. As such, we had a bunch of masks we were sending out, and I got to take a number home. So… I’ve got “a few” to say the least
I bought a bunch of masks from old navy which are great for the family members who don’t wear glasses. I bought a bag of wires on Amazon for my masks and am sewing them into the top- it helps with fogging. So far they wash well.
I am not sure what constitutes “quite a few,” but I have four reusable ones. Since I never go anywhere and have had only one houseguest, who also lives alone and is WFH, I have never worn them except to try one on. They are a bit small and I will sacrifice my beard today for a better fit, since my houseguest is returning and we will probably go out. I ordered these without much thought since they match an art print on my wall. An artist friend put some of her designs up on one of those sites that produces everything from shirts to mugs from your design, and they had masks. If I start going out more I will probably get something larger.
I bought a bunch from a local t shirt company in bulk, at the outset, before they jacked the prices up.
And then a family friend started making them, so we’ve been steadily getting a couple a week, and they’ve been piling up, since they’re all washable
My face can be too large for some of them, so I like the octogonal style with ties a little better than the pleated rectangular style with elastic loops, as the latter can sometimes push my nose down and make breathing harder.
I have a variety. My problem is that too many were made for children although they are supposedly for adults. The ear loops are too short, making my ears stick out and the ear loops slowly working themselves free from my ears. Also the material fits so snug against my mouth that speech is muffled.
I am still in search of a mask that fits comfortably.
The Corporation, Inc. sent us a half-dozen reusable cloth masks and four disposable masks. I also made two from scratch, my sister made another one for me, and I often use a modified bandanna for cover.
I rocked my shop respirator (modified to filter the air going out as well as coming in) for most of the spring, but that thing’s miserable to wear once the temperature gets above 75 or so. Now I’m mostly using reusable cloth masks, and keeping a bandanna in the truck for when I forget to grab one on the way out.
I have a couple of disposable ones I got from work (Target) then bought some of my own which may or may not be the correct type: Wish.com one with a nozzle; Two from Amazon with anime designs. They all have one thing in common:
Nose stems.
I bought a couple without the nose stems and the heat was going right into my eyes. Very uncomfortable and caused so much sweating. I haven’t tried the online ordered masks yet, but I did buy a pack of 2 cloth ones with nose stems and they seem to do well.
I will try the other masks once I have the filters.
I think this guy had only one, but it was reusable:

Lots! The masks in the box are for sale, the others are for my personal use.
@callow You make those?
@Kidsandliz Yes! 2 layers of cotton and wire with a thick bendable plastic coating, Think Gumby arms.

@Kidsandliz I’d much rather sew window treatments!
@callow And you’d actually be able to pay the bills doing that vs masks!
@callow +1 for the Gritty mask!
Do Halloween masks count?
Just one mask with around the head strap and a slot for filters. My wife has one for each dress and shoe combination.
@hchavers Hey! I like your wife’s idea! I only match mine to the outfit I wear to work each day. I think I only have maybe 2 dozen different masks.
I have 2 reusable masks.

@zinimusprime Some doctor has a youtube of putting on something like 10 masks demonstrating that he still could breath and not die.
well… the ones i use are re-usable, until they become disposable
@fuddledumpers If you let them sit for 5 days and so have 5 you cycle through that means you don’t need to worry about decontaminating them either.

One reusable mask that the hospital gave me and a bunch of reusable ones that my work has given us.

Enough that we don’t have to buy those silly cosmetic cloth masks.

I’m not planning any robberies so no mask for me, thanks.
@tjwbiowa maybe try one and see how it goes. Probably not the robbery someone might be armed

I buy mine from a wheelchair bound lady in my neighborhood.
somewhere around a dozen…

I have a mix of mainly reusable and disposable. I did order some KN95 masks off of Morningsave to try
Whats not to like. We as a world have shown how creative we can be.
