In the last few weeks I’ve cut back a ton on coffee, just to see what effect it has on my blood pressure. I’ve gone from 4-5 healthy cups per day to one. (No unpleasant side effects, thanks for asking!)
Not only am I calmer, my BP has in fact dropped down to where the doctor wants it. Heart issues pop up in my family from time to time, so better safe than sorry. I take pains to intently enjoy my morning cup with the acuity of a zen master, cuz they ain’t no more sunshine til tomorrow, friend.
I’ve never gotten an Aeropress or Keurig, though I have used both. My go to method at home is 1.5l french press; at work, it is an old 12 cup drip machine, modified to go to 13.
@narfcake What? No put a cup of water in the microwave and then when the water boils add some instant coffee? That is the only way you will get coffee in my house and you’ll have to bring your own instant. Oh well you could take longer to make it and boil water in a pan on the stove.
Ain’t nothing like sitting back and taking a long slow slurp of hot coffee in another boring meeting. Well, maybe taking a long slow slurp of coffee sitting in your favorite recliner on the weekend.
I’m thinking all the zeroes are lying. Except me. Guessing people are fooling themselves into thinking they don’t “need” all the coffee they regularly consume daily.
My consumption has begun varying wildly in the last year - I used to be a solid 4-6 cup day guy, but lately I’ll get to the evening and realize I’d only had one cup in the morning - other days I’ll empty the pot by mid-day.
Definitely will drink more if I’m tied to the keyboard for the day, less if I’m out and about in the field.
I have restricted myself to a single cup in the morning, to make sleep easier, because job.
I dream of having the freedom to drink coffee and not worry about when I am allowed to sleep, let some days run long, others short. Damn employment and its paychecks.
Ok, listen though: filtered well water, Aero press, beans roasted within the past week or maybe two, ground a few minutes before use, fine grind, and 18:1 water:coffee ratio or so. It is utterly delicious and satisfying every time, and cheap once you’re past fixed costs. Has nothing in common with the usual coffee. I don’t even worry about roasting the beans properly or controlling temperatures.
I am a bit tempted by this pour over machine thingy…
@InnocuousFarmer I have this machine and I’m still trying to find the best cup I can make in it. Is the 18:1 water:coffee ratio measured by weight or volume?
@InnocuousFarmer Sounds similar to my routine: unfiltered (because it’s delicious right out of the ground here) well water, two scoops of fresh beans ground to medium-fine in a hand cranked ceramic grinder, water heated to 160-170F and poured over the grounds to the top of the Aeropress, stir for 12-15 seconds and press. I’m enjoying my cup right now. mmm…
Did a caffeine free year in college, now I can taste it. It’s a nasty, musty flavor. The only things I found that mask it are Dr Pepper, black coffee (which taste nasty for other reasons), and coffee that has so much crap added, it doesn’t so much mask as dilute.
Late night coffee has no effect on sleep quality, new study finds. I can still sleep after drinking coffee but a glass of coffee would be nice for a weekend night enjoying a movie on live net tv apknite.
@larsencooke@rockblossom I looked up that reference- they studied a group of elderly people and determined that the people that drank coffee late at night didn’t have trouble falling asleep because of it. But they were people that regularly drank coffee at night and were used to it- it’s not like they took random people and said drink a cup of coffee before bed and see what happens. And the people that did have trouble sleeping after caffeine probably just didn’t drink caffeine at night so no data. It was a heart/sleep study.
So it may or may not keep you awake. It depends on you.
I like coffee and will drink (or eat) it in almost any state. I prefer it hot with cream and no sugar (as I’m drinking it now).
Counting different sized devices using the same method individually, I own over 30 coffee makers (and just got another one here today).
I normally use mugs for hot coffee, ranging in capacity from 10-22oz and most are ~12oz. I’ll normally have 2-3 of these a day.
About every 4-6 weeks, I’ll stop drinking coffee for 3-4 days to wash the caffeine out of my system. If I start to get a headache during this time, I’ll have a very few sips of coffee (can be surprising how little caffeine it takes to knock down a caffeine withdrawal headache).
The only time I drink coffee is when I’m waiting for oil changes and other car services. They have a touch screen selection so the most I add is 2 creamers and 2 sugar packets.
I made an impulse purchase of a cold brew coffee maker here and had to start drinking coffee so I didn’t feel quite so stupid. I was a morning cup person but boy was I cranky if I missed it. Over the summer I can sleep in a bit and switched to fancy tea from the Test Teas thread. I have a feeling I’ll be back to coffee when I have to get up before sunrise. Coffee calls to me from the kitchen. Weird. It’s all your fault, Meh.
In the summer, I drink a good 36-48 oz. Iced coffee at home, then 2-3 hot cappuccinos from the fancy machine at work. The rest of the year, I have my 26-oz trough of hot tea at home and limit myself to one cappuccino or cold brew at work. I’d like to cut my summer intake a bit, but I’m miserable enough in summer without taking away caffeine enjoyment too.
A cup of black tea (loose, various varieties) in the morning. Some soda if I need the boost in the afternoon/evening. Other evenings, when I don’t need the boost, I will make a cup of flavored black tea while catching up on work or surfing the web.
I always have some cold brewed coffee in the fridge (made using a coffee press, chock-full-of-nuts from can and filtered tap water). Periodically I will drink some with dinner. Sometimes I will fill a Contigo if I am out running errands.
At my first real job after college, where they had coffee for everyone, I started getting stomach pains around 11 am every day. I actually scheduled an appointment with a doctor, but I figured it out before I went. I switched to tea, and never had another problem. After a big meal at a nice restaurant, I like to order a Bailey’s and coffee. With whipped cream, dammit.

@baqui63 I haven’t determined if my Zojirushi Zutto counts as drip or as a pour-over because it’s hotter than most drip makers.
The Cuisinart Grind and Brew still counts as a drip.
Keurigs are for convenience only, so you’re not missing anything; the Hamilton Beach Scoop is much more cost effective to use.

I drink 3 or 4 mugs a day, but my mug is about 2 cups, so… several. Plus an energy drink at work.

@simplersimon I drank caffeine free Mountain Dew when I was pregnant. I actually missed the caffeine flavor a lot- it gives it a nice bite.
