How did you meet your spouse, significant other or the person living with you who you can't get rid of? pick one
10I met my wife at a single’s week at a resort at the Catskills in upper New York state in 1971. I went up to Grossingers with a friend of mine to play golf and she was up at the Concord (another nearby resort) with some girl friends of hers. Both were having singles weeks at the same time.
They wandered over the Grossingers to see what was going on over there and through a confusing set of circumstances (if any one is interested), I connected with her being the most geographically desirable-me being from Chevy Chase, Maryland and her being from Baltimore. The rest is history.

Well, I met my “housemate” after completing a lengthy application of something around 200 questions about my home/property, job, income, personal and professional references, etc. It was quite the exhaustive process. However, a few weeks later I received a call that they thought I would be a good match if I would like to drive the 2+ hours to Chester, IL, the home of Popeye the Sailor man.
It was quite a meeting. @Charliedoggo had been fixed earlier that day so he arrived drugged and “coned” we met in a park and exchanged cold hard cash for one very rambunctious puppy who was malnourished and in need of a lot of patience and love!
Sadly he is coned as I type, but is now well fed and feels love from everyone he knows!
@tinamarie1974 sounds like a keeper!
@tinamarie1974 what I’m taking away from that is: you handed cash to a stranger in a park to give you a companion drugged up and already in bondage gear.
@OnionSoup Well, TECHNICALLY…YES!

We met at work. I remember the day her new boss brought her around for introductions - I guess I must have gawked a bit because he smiled slyly and said “Yeah, I know.” But we were both married to other people at that time. Eight years later, we found ourselves single and I asked her out to lunch, then later a day road trip, then later dinner and clubbing. We started dating exclusively, six months later I proposed and six months after that we were married (33 years and counting… )
I walked in the door of his friends house and he stopped dead in his tracks and stared at me and I knew he was the one. My friend helped me out and said she couldn’t give me a ride home that night and of course he offered. That was 22 years ago. We work very hard at our relationship bc we’re both pains in the ass and very stubborn. We probably to much a like for our own good. He’s my best friend, I don’t know what I would do without him.
I met my wife in college. She was a year behind me. I agreed to stay in that rundown college town for ONE YEAR while she finished up. That was 20 years ago and we’re still here.
Damn it.
Tequilla. Bar Tampa, Ybor City.
And a smile that changed my world.
Coming up on 24 years of marriage. She is a pain in the ass, but she is my pain in the ass… so stay the hell away That’s my girl
@capnjb
I expect that’s what my boyfriend would say about me.
@Star2236 You know it when you know it
@capnjb Ybor City, hell yeah! Planning to take Amtrak there again in just a week or two…
@PooltoyWolf Be careful with the tequilla Make sure you get a good grouper sandwich and a good cuban sandwich (not sure if the Columbia is still there). We moved north in 2002, but I do miss the food and the fishing (don’t miss the idiots )
@capnjb I guarantee the Columbia is still there, it’s an institution!
@PooltoyWolf It certainly is! I hope Bern’s steakhouse is still around too. One evening there we were staying up way past our bedtime and the pianist in the dessert room eventually left for the night. I am someone who likes to take advantage of opportunities, so I jumped on the baby grand piano and played for 10 or 15 minutes. I am NOT a very good piano player, but a big glass of Grand Marnier gives you a lot confidence. There were maybe a dozen or so folks in the dessert room so I didn’t feel very self-conscious. I didn’t realize, however, that the piano was on CCTV and was being broadcast throughout the large restaurant. When we finally left, I got applause and high-fives from the patrons who had seen me embarrass myself I don’t seem to be able to go anywhere without coming back with a story… heh.
@capnjb I love that!!
we’ve worked together for…14 years… Together for the last 21 months.
but we First met, a month or 2 before she started working here… she was working at the KFC down the road, I stopped in on my lunch, couldn’t remember the name of the thing i wanted to get, but she understood what it was ( the Double Down - chicken “sandwich”, using 2 breaded breasts as the “bread” )
while waiting for the food, she notices my work uniform, asks how Like working there, as she’s just applied, etc. ( small talk that i suck at) at that point in time i knew there was a connection.
unfortunately she was dating some other schlub… for the next 10 years…
eventually He Dumped her for no good reason, when i found out she was single, I didn’t make a move for a while, as you don’t want to be the “rebound guy”.
we were always very friendly, and got closer, and one day, we ended up sharing our Mutual feelings for each other, and 21ish months later, we’re very happy with each other. Looking for a place together ( I’m ~45, she’s 38, both still living with parents.)
in the First 6 months of our Dating, I was out to her family home more often than the ex was in 10 years…
the only thing keeping me from “popping the question” is the living situation. I want to wait until we find a place we 1) can afford, and 2) is in an area where we would want to live… ( don’t want to get hitched and still have to live with one set of parents or the other.)
that above Pic is from about this time last year, when we went to my Nephew’s Wedding.
this one is from last year’s Ohio Ren Fair.
Fascinating
My first was in college. My second was at work.
I am very single and do not plan there to be another.
Is there one that got away. Wow. No, not really, unless you count #2. She had my heart.
I met my now husband at our local county fair when we were just youngsters. He had just signed on with the amusement company to travel as a carny. (Which he did for 2 years before having enough of that wild ride) We married other people, divorced them…and reunited - married now 23 years!
Grossingers was where my senior class trip went! (And it was closed shortly after- through no fault of ICC class of 84 FYI) That place was great!!
@BrendaJ The funny memory I had of that place was when we got there they asked us to fill out a questionaire for Operation Match (a dating match program) that would match people of similar interests to get them connected for the week. When they had the meeting to distributed to everyone a list of compatible individuals they said the only person who didn’t get at least one match was the lady who put her room number of 106 in the space where you were supposed to put your age.
@Felton10
And that was the ONLY thing you each found desirable about the other?
35 years ago, we were both involved with a local PC user group. We were both married at the time. We were more acquaintances than friends. Thirty years later, circumstances took an unanticipated turn, and we ended up together. If you had asked either of us if that could be in the cards as late as six months before it happened, we’d both have said “no”. We’d both have been wrong.
Ok-when I started this comment wasn’t sure whether people were going to post pictures of them and their spouses etc., but since some have decided to post them, I decided to post a picture of Audre. You have seen me and Walter (RIP) and Princess before so no need to see us again. Besides at 77, she looks great doesn’t she.
@Felton10 Hi Audre!!!
@Felton10 She’s seven years older, and yet she looks fabulous by comparison to me.
@Felton10 @werehatrack I think she just looks fabulious! And I love her purple hair! No compassions necessary
I took an impulsive last minute trip to visit my online girlfriend, who was going to a Sff con the next weekend, because an author I admired was supposed to be there. The author had a minor car wreck and couldn’t make it, but at the panel, my girlfriend ran into a friend of hers. I hit it off with him so much that both our girlfriends told us to get a room. Roughly 8 months later, we did one better and got an apartment together. His ex ended up a hot mess of a terf, my ex turned out to have really complex mental health issues, and we’ve been chill for nearly 20 years together.
first one, we met in high school but never dated. lost touch during college and reconnected just before our ten year high school reunion. got married, got a house, had a kid, but it just didn’t work out. i would not trade the time we did have.
fast forward 5 years and along comes the second one. we met like all the kids do these days… online. we bonded over star wars. me, having seen all of them and the offshoots, and her, having seen none of it and refusing to watch. we then realized she was an iphone person, and i was all in on android. but, we stayed together despite me having to touch (ewww…) and do tech support on apple products for her and her parents.
a mere 4 months after we met, we booked a trip to Seychelles for her birthday. i mean, at only $600 round trip ticket for each, it was worth the risk. 4 months after that, we went on that trip and it was amazing! one and a half years after that, we tied the knot. been married for a little over a year now and just moved into a new house that we love 4 weeks ago. it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but she pushes me to be a better communicator (admittedly, i’m not the best at it).
she still clings to her iphone like a shipwreck survivor clinging to a door that obviously has room for two people. but, she has pretty good interior design skills, so i let it slide.
I met my now fiancé years ago on Twitter after he saw pictures of Fenris (my big inflatable wolf) and realized he had a massive shared interest. It snowballed from there.
@PooltoyWolf I think my favorite part is that fort in the middle.
@xobzoo Ah yes, Fort Shithole. A shoddily constructed sheet and tube edifice from which to play Minecraft and watch TV. (Yes, we are children!)
I threw a ball and we danced, but then right after midnight she ran off and dropped her glass slipper and I had to go around town trying to find whose foot the slipper fit… because that’s the only way to identify women, by foot shape, other than that they’re all alike and have no other readily identifiable features.
(Reality… Back in college met her as my friend’s little 14 y/o sister… I was 17 at the time and had no interest in her. 5 years later though we accidentally went on a date. 4 months after that we were engaged and 5 months after that we were married. 23 years after that, I’m answering this question online)
@OnionSoup I’m intrigued by how you “accidentally went on a date”!
@Kyeh whenever my now wife would come into town to visit my friend the three of us would go to this one Indian restaurant together we all loved.
When my friend left town to go to grad school I mentioned how there would be no one left to go that restaurant with anymore. She said (and I thought she was joking at the time) “I’m sure my sister will go with you” to which I replied (joking because she lived 3 hours away) “tell your sister I’ll buy her dinner if she comes to see me then”.
Next thing I know my friend is telling me her sister is coming to town to see me next weekend. At this point still had no idea it was a date (I had no idea what to expect, but assumed it was just a visit as a friend., and still I think that was her intention at the time)… As the evening went the friendly visit somehow slowly morphed into more of a date as we slowly started flirting more and more.
So yeah, I’m married now because I made a casual comment that I wasn’t serious about. Not that I have any complaints.
@OnionSoup That’s great! It sounds like she had her sights set on you before you knew it.
@Kyeh when we first met and she was 14 and I was 17, I knew she had a crush on me, but she was too young for me. I think that initial crush had long since gone by the time I accidentally asked her on a date… But, yes, I know now she still liked me through the following years enough to drive three hours to have dinner with me.
“Can’t” or “won’t”?
