As a Minnesotan, my relationship with winter coats is very complex. The coat I wear for a 35 degree day in November is very different than the coat I wear (or don’t wear) for a 35 degree day in March!
Currently rocking the winter hoodie when it’s below freezing; will pull out the actual winter coat on days it’s below zero.
@QuietDelusions same here. I live in MN, moved from CA in 2012. I have acclimated since then. It is low 20s here today, I did put my mukluks on to keep my feet dry but I went out to feed the birds, grab more firewood and brush away the fresh fallen snow with only a hoodie and sweatpants on. If I had to be out in it for more than the 10-15 min I was I might put another jacket, but the parka doesn’t come out until it is well below zero.
I have 3 or 4 types of ‘Winter coats’, it depends on what I’m doing outside.
Whether I’m cutting firewood, working on my tractor, pouring down 34 degree rain, out for a walk on a cold dry day, it all takes different jackets.
Depends on how long I’m going to be outside. If it’s just from heated house to car to heated office, probably closer to 20°. If I’m staying outside to shovel or whatever, probably closer to 40°. Otherwise I have a lighter weight coat for that. Ditto on gloves. They’re always in my pocket but I rarely take them out.
If it’s just to the mailbox and back, no coat. Sometimes robe and slippers. Go Michigan!
@katbyter I’m sort of similar to you on this but I do keep a coat in my car just in case. I’m always worried there could be a malfunction which causes me to be on the side of the road and then not have a coat with me. But as I said earlier, I live in Florida so my winter coat is what you might call a jacket or windbreaker.
@cengland0@gominosensei I have in my car a sleeping bag, hat, mittens, sweatshirt, fleece jacket, and blanket. Of course that is partly left over from driving a car that finally died at 25 years and 3 months where I lived up north some of those years and drive home up see family over Christmas.
It depends on other factors like rain, wind, activity, and duration outside. Also the season. In the fall when the temperature only goes up to 60°F, I need a jacket. In the spring when it warms up to 60°F, a t-shirt is fine!
@jerk_nugget@Ray21104 I had that same issue last night. I had my neighbor come outside so I could give her some homemade cookies. I was wearing yoga capris and a tshirt. No socks, shoes or a jacket. She had on a sweatshirt, long pants and socks/shoes. Peaks her head out a d asks me if she should put o her coat, I was like I am barefoot and you are asking me?? For the two minutes we were outside she was SHIVERING and continually asked me AREN’T YOU COLD? WHY NOT? It was comical
@jerk_nugget@Ray21104@tinamarie1974 I used to have the hardest time with my mom in the winter.
Me (in t-shirt and jeans in winter) Hi Mom!
Mom: It’s cold… go put on a sweater…
Me: you’re cold… you put on a bigger sweater, or turn up the heat…
Never really understood her logic…
@chienfou yes! that’s what gets me (aside from me being obviously not cold) - i always want to say, “i think what you mean is ‘i’m cold’.”
or you get the ones who say something like “go put something on, you’re making me cold!” like actually…that’s not how that works but feel free to look away
Light coat below freezing, heavy coat only if its windy or below zero Fahrenheit, or if I’m going to be outside for extended periods. So its actually pretty rare.
If I’m going to stay outside for a while, the hoodie comes out in the low 70s if I’m not in the sun and there’s wind. If it’s colder or crazy windy, I might use a thicker hoodie or a long sleeve shirt and a hoodie. I haven’t worn a thick jacket in several years.
I remember a long time ago we had a few weeks that dropped into the 30s at night and I had to work outside starting around 5 in the morning before the sun came out. I didn’t have winter clothes so I ended up wearing those Adidas track pants over my jeans, two hoodies on top of each other, a beanie, and some gloves. Driving a forklift sucked those days. I just remember my feet and my boobs were still cold. I’d still take that over the hot summers here in Florida. I’d just buy some proper clothing for the cold. Cold and humid just don’t mix.
I have a wool coat that comes out around 30-35F. And then there’s the ankle-length down coat that I bought for January in Iceland. That one is useful for filling the gas tank in biting wind, but it’s usually too much.
I’m in northern Alabama, where winter is mostly a sopping wet 40-50F, with a few 15 degree days per year.
As previously mentioned, a lot depends on
A} what will I be doing outside ?
B} how long will I be outside ?
C} what is the weather (other than temperature) ?
D} have I been drinking ?
each of these has a factor in the coat equation…
Something like C-(B+A)/D.
Nahhh who am I kidding … I just wing it.
edit:
well, that sux I can’t use a B with a ) or I get a sun icon…
TL:DR I don’t need much to stay warm so rarely wear a winter jacket.
I live in Wisconsin. I bought my winter jacket in Naples Florida. I wear it when it gets below 20 degrees. otherwise I wear a windbreaker. Most of my time outside is dealing with snow, or driving a car.
Below freezing with ice/snow and I’ll break out the winter coat. Otherwise it’s far too annoying to keep track of since I’m usually in some sort of climate controlled environment most of the time.
Depends on what I’m doing. If I’m just going out, 40 degrees gets long sleeves and a vest. If I’m doing any kind of physical work, I lose the vest. Freezing is my coat threshold, and my raynaud’s means I avoid outdoor work at those temperatures if at all possible. (It’s not always possible, but that’s just part of living in the country.)
@chienfou Which IT do you get? The one from the King novel will never get my coat. The one from The Addams Family doesn’t appear to need one. I might lend a coat to IT if they were fixing my DSL cable in icy weather.
i never wear a winter coat. i live in boston but i run very warm and i also don’t have occasion to go on long walks outside or spend extended periods of time outdoors. a zip up hoodie is sufficient for walking through parking lots. a silk scarf if it’s really cold. if we go to a club or something i have a couple denim “fashion” jackets and a pleather one to choose from.
i do own an “actual” winter coat but i’ve never worn it. but i kept it in case i have to go to a wedding, funeral, or court in winter someday. (thankfully so far no need.)
if i’m cold inside our apartment i have an electric throw and a big king size couch blanket. on rare occasions i bust out The Comfy™ my mom got me for xmas one year. i’m not usually one for gimmicks but this thing is awesome. slept in it when we had no heat for a few days last year or the year before.
I don’t really have a winter coat. I have a couple mid weight jackets and a light jacket. I wear the light jacket when it gets below 50, I wear a medium when it gets below 40. I have never needed more than that, but I live in TX
Floridians don’t have Michiganders winter coats. Our winter coats would be considered fall or spring wear to anyone north of the Carolinas. (I’m not including SoCal here as I’m waiting for the last American out of there to bring the flag with them. Kidding? Meh.)

Are your temperatures Fahrenheit or Kelvin?
@awk If they were Kelvin you would be dead at any of those temperatures.
@awk @yakkoTDI c’mon, obviously he meant Rankine.
@yakkoTDI Right, that’s why I’d need to grab my coat.
I have 3 or 4 types of ‘Winter coats’, it depends on what I’m doing outside.

I live in Florida so I wear a coat if it goes below 70 degrees.
@cengland0 Heck, I get nervous and start carrying one around if it goes below 80. Just in case…

@cengland0 I do the same thing for the same reason. Though I’m in Wisconsin, so it’s probably a heavier coat.
@cengland0 @gominosensei I have in my car a sleeping bag, hat, mittens, sweatshirt, fleece jacket, and blanket. Of course that is partly left over from driving a car that finally died at 25 years and 3 months where I lived up north some of those years and drive home up see family over Christmas.
I wish I could wear a winter coat- I have a couple of cute ones, but I’m always too warm. I’m one of those weirdos who wears shorts when it’s snowing.
Living in Texas, I have a windbreaker, a fleece / sweater, light jacket, and a London Fog. But what is winter jacket?
It depends on other factors like rain, wind, activity, and duration outside. Also the season. In the fall when the temperature only goes up to 60°F, I need a jacket. In the spring when it warms up to 60°F, a t-shirt is fine!
Everyone to me: “HEY, WHERE’S YOUR COAT?!”
@Ray21104 relatable. also “AREN’T YOU COLD??”
@jerk_nugget @Ray21104 I had that same issue last night. I had my neighbor come outside so I could give her some homemade cookies. I was wearing yoga capris and a tshirt. No socks, shoes or a jacket. @jerk_nugget @tinamarie1974 Hell Yes! Yes!! Yes!!
@jerk_nugget @Ray21104
Why, yes, I’m an idiot, and now that you mention it I am… Maybe you should put a coat on so I won’t be so cold…
/giphy here’s your sign…
Light coat below freezing, heavy coat only if its windy or below zero Fahrenheit, or if I’m going to be outside for extended periods. So its actually pretty rare.
I’ll wear a jacket if it hits 58 degrees or less. Living in Florida, I don’t know what a “winter” coat is.

I live in central Florida. I have a thin fleece jacket that is too hot to wear unless it is in the 30s with little wind or 40s with a strong wind.
I have a wool coat that comes out around 30-35F. And then there’s the ankle-length down coat that I bought for January in Iceland. That one is useful for filling the gas tank in biting wind, but it’s usually too much.

@chienfou the booze blanket is absolutely a factor, you’re right. forgot to add that one myself.
@jerk_nugget

@jerk_nugget …this is NOT an endorsement for drinking and driving…
@chienfou @jerk_nugget He’s got a radio on his hip, is that a gun too? Yee haw.
@jerk_nugget @therealjrn looks like he may have trouble getting out of the trailer park…

@rockblossom ooooh, I get it…
(Good one!)

If it is below 40, I wear my jacket. If it goes below freezing, I put in the thinsulate liner. I haven’t worn my long coat in 10 years or more.
40-ish at night, I’ll have a sweatshirt or hoodie on, but it’s a good chance I’ll still be wearing sandals. Because SoCal.
@narfcake What about the poop? Doesn’t it squish up thru yer toes?
@narfcake that is good open window with a fan on sleeping weather!

I wear a coat or hooodie all the time. I’m always cold.
hmm. at 20 i’ll wear a jacket but leave the liner out. at 10 the liner is definitely in. (all temperatures celsius.)
