I got to see him play in a small club when I was in college. This was before smoking was restricted, but he stipulated that it had to be a non-smoking show. So enjoyable! And we were close enough to watch his expressions and hands - it was great.
A friend of mine used to get on-stage tickets when he played the Sander’s Theater in Cambridge, MA. The third time we went, he was nearing the end of his career and having trouble navigating the stairs on and off the stage. I happened to be sitting on the end near his piano and he asked me to help him off the stage at the end of the first set and back on when the second started.
Dave Brubeck’s drummer, Joe Morello, visited my jr. high band class once. He was very animated and entertaining - he told a few jokes (one I recall about breaking his self-winding watch during a particularly vigorous drum solo). And he played a bit for us. Nice guy.

Best tune ever!
