When I was a kid, I liked going to the dentist because of the heavy cover they put on you when they take xrays. I should probably buy a weighted blanket.
I see commercials for dental surgery under sedation for people who are “afraid of the dentist”. I’m a grown adult, I’m not afraid of the fucking dentist, I’m afraid of the bill!
@TheFLP My husband did. But mostly because he was in ATC and would be grounded to desk duty if he had any within a certain period of time before work. Not me. I say give me a 6 pack of that stuff!
If they are pulling teeth, I’m sedated for sure, it’s a horrible, gory, process. I had 8 root canal & crowns that, back in the 70’s/80’s, were thought to last but 20-25 years. They began to bother me in the early 00’s and ended up having them all surgically extracted. I was told implants would be 15K+ and that is not happening. I spent $500 on a bridge to make my mouth look and function efficiently. Spending serious cash on your teeth implants, along with the arduous process, is for people who make a living with their looks. If you can eat, look normal in a picture, and enjoy life with some vacancy’s in your pie hole, save your money. Let your dentist find a better way to send his kids to college.
@JoeSeadog I’ve had a lot of probs also and with those root canals done in 70s and early 80s. But it’s sad that while they all battle back and forth about health insurance, none of that really includes dental. The premiums have gone up significantly in the past 35 yrs but the amount it covers has stayed identical to what it was in 1981.
@JoeSeadog@lseeber For that matter, what’s the deal with dentistry still being so separate from pretty much all of the rest of healthcare? Is it a holdover from when barbers were responsible for pulling teeth centuries ago?
I haven’t gone in years because I’ve had so many terrible experiences. The last time, I had a filling that needed to be refilled, it had fallen out. The dentist was a great guy, but when I came back to get my filling filled, there was some 12 year old fresh out of school. That filling hurt for 6 months after it was done. And then it fell out again less than 2 years later. I take super good care of my teeth and I’m not going in until it hurts. They can pull that tooth next time.
Dentists aren’t so bad. My first memory of the dentist was on my 3rd birthday. I was playing and getting ready for the festivities when all of a sudden I found myself and my front tooth unwillingly separated. I remember crying on my mother’s shoulder as blood gushed from the new divot in my mouth, covering half of her sweater. It was pink, and afterward it was a lovely half red.
The dentist saw my Marina trench gumline and worked some magic. Ever since the dentist has been a calming place for me. To this day I can’t fall asleep without the noise of a drill and wail of someone in pain.

OTOH, if I could go to the dentist and he could make my elbows stop hurting, I’d consider it.
