Well, if you were on Venus, and the solar panel was optimally facing the sun, you might get the lab tested maximum output of 11w. Also if you had a full solar day on Venus, 243.025 days, you might get that 4-lbs of battery pack charged.
I personally have never backpacked the opaque layer of clouds which are formed from sulphuric acid on Venus due to my COPD but I heard you’d want a nice backpack and BT speakers.
Since this is missing the built in speakers, I’m gonna pass tonight but mehby next time.
This would melt on Venus. Let’s do some math. I’ll assume the battery is roughly 12.5 volts.
11.0W / 14V (guess at avg. charging voltage) = 0.785A x 3600s/hr = ~2800Ah per hour
In direct sunlight it would likely complete a full charge in 6-8 hours depending on the charging efficiency.
So even if the panel was putting out half it’s claimed power because of clouds, poor positioning, or user error you would still easily be able to fill the battery in 2 days. 16,000mAh is only like 4-5 phone charges… it’s really not much capacity to fill. An 11W panel is plenty if used correctly.
this DOES look like a nice backpack and without the giant battery it’s pretty light at 3lbs. I have a solar panel battery setup I backpack with but the battery is big enough to charge my phone once and my phone is normally in airplane mode to save the battery. An interesting note, when backpacking in Iceland your phone WILL solar charge over night because the sun is still out most of the night
Im seriously debating this. Im in a market for a new pack but as someone who packs light…this seem excessive any one here have one and actually use it to backpack for a weekend or longer?
@fireghotibug I believe I have a 40L that I use for 1-2 night hikes. I usually don’t pack cookware so a 60L would be welcome if I did, or if I wanted to extend a 3rd night. This pack looks nice, but I would probably remove the 4lb battery as others suggest.
@fireghotibug I was worried it was too small. I have a 65L and even packing light, a weekend trip with a small tent, sleeping bag, simple JetBoil, packets, and clothing and I’m bursting at the seams. I would go to 80L but it deters me from overloading with trinkets.
@TheDonFelipe & @flintoid thanks for the replys I still have a bit to decide but I might just get the upgraded version of the external frame I have. I have no idea how to pack an internal frame.
Aside from the sleeping bag compartment at the bottom and all the extra pockets, an internal is basically a huge drawstring bag. Heavy stuff first. If your tent or bedroll don’t fit in the bag they can strap onto the back in a dozen different ways. That is, unless you’ve decided to strap a solar array on it instead.
@burckhartjack, Yep @rustyh3 is correct. You can add any modifications to your backpack that you wish. If you want the solar/battery thing from meh.com today, it will come shipped in a protective 60L bag for $79 plus shipping.
If you search a little on the AMZN, you’ll find camping solar panels.
So this thing is 7 lbs before you put any other gear in it? It seems the audience for this would be very narrow. Light and ultralight backpacking has been popular for a very long time now. I can go out for a few days with only 25 lbs including full food and water, and I am not a minimalist. I have a slightly heavier cook stove because I like the convenience and a small camp chair to save my bad back from locking up. Many backpackers will take a luxury or two but at 4 extra lbs it seems only a scout or trip leader would want this.
It’s not that hard to think of uses for more than one USB port. For example if you aren’t camping alone and someone else brought a phone as well. Or if you have one or more USB rechargeable flashlights or hanging camp lanterns/lights. Personally I would rather have too many than too few.
Turns out you can’t use the solar panels to charge up your gear overnight. Total scam. I’m out.
@shahnm Just use your USB rechargeable flashlight to run the solar panels. Or if you really want to be fancy, the flash LED on your smart phone.
@mehcuda67 @shahnm

Odd
Gotta walk zig zaggy all day… Start going west in the morning, turn north toward afternoon, go east later in the day…
How realistic is that 11w panel at giving 11w?
That mountainside story…
@thechilipepper0 wtf indeed. Wow!
So apparently this backpack is also bulletproof.
@djslack @thechilipepper0 I think someone’s 8 year old wrote that copy - that story alone makes me not want to buy this …
@djslack @thechilipepper0 Right? They should mention that in the specs!
@djslack @stolicat @thechilipepper0 lots of bored writers in NYC

Everyone is talking about camping. What about crazy doomsday survival types? Wouldn’t this be a good choice for when its time to abandon civilization?
@dam091 I’m still working on getting my motley crew together.
@dam091 also, I forgot to ask: any chance for a coupon code, meh? It’s been a while since I came in here, and I’m buying something!
@dam091 Wouldn’t it make more sense to give you a coupon if you bought more things and “came in here” more often?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@therealjrn save me a running board…

Also, that makes this a pretty smokin’ deal if you’re into powered camping backpacks.
looks cool
Looks like it’s a good backpack even aside from the battery pack and solar panel… at half or a third of the typical price.
unsafe-floppy-fern it is.
As meh put it…Oh God, what did I do?
I just bought a 64L backpack last year from here that’s really great. can I buy just the solar/battery thing and add it to mine?
@burckhartjack Yes of course.

@rustyh3 @therealjrn I hadn’t thought of it as a 60L protective bag. Hmm. now I know where all the struggling comedians went.

Anyone care to do the math on realistic yield from that solar noodle?
No
@Viper1 Okay.
Anyone know how much you can cinch up the top–i.e., could I get it down to 22 inches for airline carry-on?

Meh.com/support
I ordered lighters and earphones and I only got the lightest what’s happening with that order
@Emmeth You don’t appear to have ordered anything using your present log-in. Perhaps write into meh.com.support and they can help you.
@Emmeth Actually, I forgot about the cross-pollination of MorningSave in the meh.com forums…if you ordered from MorningSave, try writing into https://morningsave.com/support and you may also look up your orders here: https://morningsave.com/orders
@Emmeth orders ship separately. Check your order page to see a separate tracking number.
