@hchavers Why would you want anything less than Hi Def? Aim it below the desk & show 'em what’s under your kilt!
[Wearing office dress above the waist and jammies below is so retro. Be innovative and impress your boss/customers! Make that impression!]
@hchavers@phendrick Play the PH intro on your phone during your zoom calls. Anything offensive is entirely in the mind of the listener, and that’s on them, not you.
I really wish I could find a webcam with a view angle of about 55 to 60 degrees; I don’t really want a wide angle, because it peeks past the backdrop on both sides.
@KENSAI
And if you move it close enough for your face to occupy a significant portion of the screen, the perspective goes wonky. There’s a reason why good portraits are shot with a longer (near-telephoto) lens.
The last camera that I bought like this didn’t work in Linux because of some specific bug to that camera. Anyone try this on Linux?
(It does claim it works on Amazon, but I was hoping for someone who can actually confirm that. Strangers on Meh are more trustworthy than someone selling me something.)
@LexPendragon@LordRegent As a HW engineer, I admit the whole thing is a little buggy. It works about 95% of the time. Requiring a complete power down/up about once a month or 2. I am running camorama on an early Paspberry Pi 4. It is NOT a critical application. I have not tried MotionEye or octoprint.
@Kyeh@LexPendragon My bad. I have lowered my expectations for VMP so much, I didn’t think there was anything special other than the few memories of what might have had been benefits. Can I get a “Fuck yeah!” for congugation in English! WTF tense was that?
@LordRegent Octoprint uses mjpg-streamer. The last time I configured one of these cheap USB webcams I plugged it in and got a /dev/video0, which I pointed mjpg-streamer at and it just worked.
I don’t know where my webcam is but someone sent me an email saying they turned on my webcam while I was having sex and if I didn’t send them $500 in bitcoins they were gonna send it to all my contacts. I told them to go ahead because if they caught someone having sex in my bed it wasn’t me.
@oldmantick Yeah, the story of my “/giphy applicable haggard pine” life, but now I think this camera gives me the extra eye I need to see what’s important :
I’m assuming ‘dual omnidirectional microphones’ means dual mono microphones, as they’d likely use the word ‘stereo’ if they were. (Not that this application really needs or benefits from stereo separation.)
@PooltoyWolf Yes, they confirm it’s mono, not stereo. Why they would want dual omni is unknown unless their “omni” isn’t all that omni in fact - which I suspect is probably the case.
Dual omni mics are no better than a single omni- they just help pick up every single sound from the entire room: clocks, fans, heaters, phones, kids, pets…
A better situation would be a cardioid pattern mic, or even a directional one, aimed the same as the camera. That would pick up your voice, and less of everything else. But “omni” sounds cooler and more techy.
@MrNews I figure I am wearing my bourgie Jabra headset, so the mic won’t matter. I just want my D&D crew to see the wall behind me where I have a flag, and not my messy office and my wife’s side of it because of where my laptop sits relative to my docking station. If I ever do try to use it for the whole room, I guess I would want it to pick up every snide comment my wife makes from across the room when my gnome fails his stealth roll, again.
Most of the Zoom meetings I’ve attended were training sessions where they want you to turn your camera off to preserve bandwidth. That makes the resolution just a teensy bit irrelevant.
@knotworking@mediocrebot
Yes, I know that what the giphy thing fetches is not in any way tied to what Meh is going to sell next. But oh, my, how that particular item looks like one that they might.
@knotworking@mediocrebot I would think a more effective way of getting rid of “gravitational wrinkles” would be getting rid of gravity. Perhaps apply to be an astronaut?
Finally got to use this Foscam three months after purchase, for a Zoom meeting. Initially, I plugged it into my PC desktop and it went on OK, with its small green light visible. But then six seconds later, it flickered OFF and its red light went on. I unplugged it, re-plugged its cable into my PC, and same thing happened a second time. I waited for my Zoom meeting to begin, to try again a third time, and it was totally dead (except for its little red indicator light); no one could hear nor see me.
Normally I’d say something witty about a mehrethon, but I’m just out of ideas. Been too long.
On the plus side, I did pick up my XBox Series X today, and damn is it fast! I love the quick game switching.
@guybrush01 rare on a weekend and Monday is a federal holiday. My money is on Monday.
@guybrush01 The quality of life improvement with quick resume is worth every penny.
What would I want conference callers to be able to see me in high definition? They hear the voice. Let them imagine what I look like.

Here’s some background music to try out.
I really wish I could find a webcam with a view angle of about 55 to 60 degrees; I don’t really want a wide angle, because it peeks past the backdrop on both sides.
@werehatrack Agreed. I don’t know where the wide angle “requirement” came from. Who does group video calls from a laptop/desktop?
@KENSAI
And if you move it close enough for your face to occupy a significant portion of the screen, the perspective goes wonky. There’s a reason why good portraits are shot with a longer (near-telephoto) lens.
@werehatrack I think a wider angle lens is a more compact lens and that’s why they all have it. But mostly useless for anything but security cameras.

(It does claim it works on Amazon, but I was hoping for someone who can actually confirm that. Strangers on Meh are more trustworthy than someone selling me something.)
@LexPendragon I have a very similar Foscam camera to this that does work fine on my Raspberry Pi. It is running some sort of Linux. I bought 2.
@bfg9000 @LexPendragon Ok, you answered my question. If it works on a raspberry pi, I may bite.
@bfg9000 I’m sold.
/buy
(Is this how that’s works? Never bot-bought before.)
@bfg9000 @LexPendragon what application for your raspberry pi? I was thinking of grabbing some for octoprint.
@LexPendragon @LordRegent As a HW engineer, I admit the whole thing is a little buggy. It works about 95% of the time. Requiring a complete power down/up about once a month or 2. @LexPendragon
The /buy only works for VMPs; one of the few privileges they can still claim. Us lowly mehmbers have to go buy it on the main page.
@LexPendragon You have to do the /buy thing as a top-level comment, not a reply.
@Kyeh @LexPendragon My bad. I have lowered my expectations for VMP so much, I didn’t think there was anything special other than the few memories of what might have had been benefits. Can I get a “Fuck yeah!” for congugation in English! WTF tense was that?
@Kyeh Yeah, I see that now.
/giphy haphazard-soaking-clock
@LexPendragon Hah, you think they’ll sell us that clock?
@LexPendragon Only if it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker.
/giphy warm-arrogant-operation
@Kyeh @LexPendragon It’s not just a VMP thing. Regular mehmbers can use the /buy tag. It does have to be a top-level comment.
Check out @buteyn’s use of it below:

@mike808 A-MEH-ri-ca! Fuck Yeah!
…oh, but you spelled “conjugation” wrong…
@roninido Fine then. Go conjugate yourself.
A solo-conjugal “visit”, there’s a pandemic-worthy concept for you.
@mike808 Ugh, I think I just did I’m gonna say that you’re awesome just to get mediocrebot to say stupid things to me. And because you’re awesome
POPSOCKETS! SPA KITS! POLLY POCKETS! AWESOME!
@mediocrebot And there it is
I can’t see a clear image of myself buying this deal.

An Old Fossil Cam? That should be just perfect for me!
In for 3. Finally time to upgrade from the old 720. See you in a decade, 4k!

@spavlis I miss the Starcourt Mall
Twice is nice. Even if it is a pesky, jazzy boat.

Would this work with a raspberry pi + motioneye OS?
@cfg83 you scrolled right past the pi thread
@oldmantick Yeah, the story of my “/giphy applicable haggard pine” life, but now I think this camera gives me the extra eye I need to see what’s important :
Can this really do 1080p?
@Hanky Yes, really badly I’m sure. Pure potatocam.
I’m assuming ‘dual omnidirectional microphones’ means dual mono microphones, as they’d likely use the word ‘stereo’ if they were. (Not that this application really needs or benefits from stereo separation.)
@PooltoyWolf
Dual Omnidirectional according to the see-more-specs info above.
@PooltoyWolf Yes, they confirm it’s mono, not stereo. Why they would want dual omni is unknown unless their “omni” isn’t all that omni in fact - which I suspect is probably the case.
@werehatrack That is in fact where I read it.
Dual omni mics are no better than a single omni- they just help pick up every single sound from the entire room: clocks, fans, heaters, phones, kids, pets…

@LexPendragon If by “bourgie” you mean what I think you mean, don’t let the Jacobins find out!
@MrNews Oh yeah, Omni is way cool! This is what the camera was going to look like :
@cfg83 @MrNews Hey, I had a subscription to Omni in the days of yore. Great magazine. I think I remember Larry Niven dropping a Ringworld story in it.
@cfg83 @mike808 Yep, cool reading back in the, what, early 80s? Especially tasty after smoking one of those funny cigarettes…
