@tweezak in the summer the sun never fully sets, opposite in the winter. I lived in the southern half of Norway so we did get some sun in the winter. The last time I visited was forever ago, but we went in the summer. It was bizarre to be out, it be 1am, and the sun just appears to be an hour or so before sunset.
I just looked at a local weather report. Dawn at 8:55 today, dusk at 4:20.
I was a kid so I don’t know if I was depressed and miserable in the winter.
I never quite think of it as seasonal affective disorder, but that first day of spring when you can go outside without a jacket always feels like I was just released from prison or something.
According to my shrink, reverse SAD is a thing, and I have it. I have chronic major depression that’s mostly well controlled, but it flares up in a big way in the summer. Fun!
@ahacksaw me too. i think for me it’s because so many people - whether they have “actual” SAD or not - sort of get knocked down a peg or three during winter so during that time i feel more “normal” because the gap between me and neurotypical people isn’t as large. plus for some reason i feel sort of energized by the holidays. in summer i just feel completely alien and it’s usually my hibernation period.
@jerk_nugget Yes, that’s exactly it for me too. I do sometimes get bursts of energy in winter, but more often I just approach the level that others are at.
@ahacksaw the great equilibrium! then the sun starts to come out for longer hours and i’m like “well, that was nice for a minute i guess”

@ahacksaw@jerk_nugget Interesting - that’s kind of how I’ve felt about the pandemic - it has sort of made my natural tendencies the norm! I usually shop at off hours so I can avoid the crowds, don’t like activities with massive hoards gathered together, and have always been uncomfortable at parties. Having large work meetings on Zoom feels a lot better to me than crowding into a large room and sitting in hard chairs trying not to fidget!
@Kyeh definitely has been interesting and at times accommodating! trying to just enjoy those parts and not feel bitter, but sometimes it’s hard when you were told certain things wouldn’t be possible but clearly they are extremely easy to do and now i have to listen to people act like they’re a genius for ~coming up with the idea~ lol
@jerk_nugget Also, watching people dealing with uncertainty has been so interesting - if you’ve spent so much of life feeling out of sync with the “normal” world then seeing everyone feel that way is just a bit gratifying, too be honest.
I live in Big Sky where the sun shine 300+ days a year and snow capped mountain vistas stretch on as far as the eye can see!
I still have to get out there to absorb some sunlight or I get lethargic.
@accelerator Evidently I’m affected. I can’t edit, or delete, my post or add an image from my folder. It converts my image from a .jpeg to a .heic file I think I better go outside and absorb some sunlight!
SAD’s the thing where you get less sun exposure and get depressed as a result, right? I can get tired and unmotivated. Probably worth buying some brighter lights for working I guess.
I’m best when it’s sunny and cool. Summer heat can drag me down, and having to work during most of the sunlight days under artificial lighting does nothing to lift my spirit. Come to think of it, I’m going for a walk now.
I sleep all day and never leave the house. What season it is doesn’t really have an effect on my life.If anything winter is a better time for me because it is cheaper to heat my place than cool it.
Luckily the lockdown inadvertently led me to a remedy in the form of DAS! I don’t know if I’m any less grouchy, but I definitely don’t feel SAD despite the lack of sunlight.
Fortunately I don’t suffer from SAD, but I have lived near Syracuse, NY (worse lake effect snow than Buffalo, on average) and in Daytona Beach, Florida, and weatherwise, I liked Daytona better. Neither one could beat North Carolina, however.

For some reason, I don’t seem to be affected. Maybe it was growing up in Sunny South Florida, where I was always outside in the warm sunlight.

@tweezak I think the reason so many Scandanavians settled in North Dakota and Minnesota is they liked the warm weather.
@ThunderChicken I was referring more to the months of dark and gloom.
